Please tell me I'm not alone here...

£4000 for a family of four to holiday in a self catering studion in Tenerbloodyrife!

I don't even want to go to Tenerife, but my expectations are getting lower... started off looking at villas in Sardinia but knocked sideways at the price. Now looking at anything... ANYTHING! that will ensure a reasonable standard of accommodation outside of the UK during July/August but cannot believe the price!

I know I must sound naive, but I really didn't think it would be this much. I was think a couple of thousand would be enough...

I know I may also sound a little self-entitled, but we have DONE camping and holidays in the UK for the last six years, and I thought that now I'm working again, and dh and I are on a combined salary of roughly 60k, and our mortgage isn't too much, that we would finally be able to afford something this year!

So AIBU to think that families who do manage to stump up the extortionate prices for a couple of weeks in the sun are a) loaded b) being ripped off or c) both?

Any advice as to reasonably priced holidays also welcomed... I know this isn't the travel section but I'm suddenly feeling too poor to rub shoulders with the travel lot! Grin

Thanks guys for all your responses - have just realised that this thread has been resurrected since I started it in March (Forlorn your first PM makes sense now!)

I have booked a lovely looking place in France through independent gite owners on a site dh stumbled across. Private pool etc. Flights via Ryanair. All in all with car hire going to be about £2000 for two weeks.

Very excited! Grin

Going to save this thread for future reference...

Here's two great offers!

  1. Glamping in Thetford Forrest - August (Four Days)
  2. Disneyland Paris - August Bank Holiday

Both are with www.outandaboutevents.co.uk
Great value for money!!

Last year we went to Corfu in August, for 2 weeks, small & friendly hotel with pool near the beach. No holiday clubs (but we aren't really into them), near beach, nice resort - hotel typically greek, clean but not fancy.

It cost £1150 for the 3 of us. I think we booked through Thomas Cook, it was probably Sunset or something like that.

We're going to the south of France, on canal du midi in August. 2 bed, 2 bath apartment with shared pool is Euro650 per week through Owners Direct, Eurotunnel was about £140. Now I know we'll spend lot on petrol and food but I'm cool with that since the initial outlay is quite low. I wouldn't ever do a package in summer hols mainly because I REALLY value having 2 bedrooms and packages just don't seem to accomodate that and it works out really expensive. Also, I like to avoid the masses (!)

Tell your parents to move to Cyprus/Spain/other desired location... My parents did that and it's saved a fortune on holidays...

me too, except you have to put up with relatives on your holiday - the only drawback
