Anyone know how to get a contraceptive implant taken out as an emergency?

I've had the thing for three weeks and it has completely ruined my mental health to the point where I almost just took it out myself with a kitchen knife. It's also causing me a lot of pain after healing at first since it's moving up and down my arm - it was about a centimeter down from the insertion site, then migrated back to almost the insertion site and now is a centimeter away once again. I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can have it taken out quickly? Is a minor injuries unit likely to do it? Might they be reluctant to do it but be willing if I tell them that I'll do it myself otherwise?

GO TO A&E - tehy wull do it rather than you self harming! Hormones are horrible.
A&E RATHER THAN YOUR KITCHEN DRAWER

If it's a mirena coil, there's nothing to it. Just go into your gp or emergency if it's out of hours. It takes about 3 secs to pull it out.

whoops, missed the arm part

lyra41 · 06/03/2011 06:17

Hope you're ok queen & you haven't gone down the kitchen knife route! Def head for A&e asap.

thumbwitch · 06/03/2011 06:24

Yep, A&E to have it removed properly and your wound dressed properly so you don't get infected.

floatyjosmum · 06/03/2011 09:22

i had mine fitted and removed at the local sdexual health clinic, they generally have drp ins s you dont have to make an appointment!

BlueCat2010 · 06/03/2011 09:29

Maybe the out of hours doctor rather than A & E?

Undertone · 06/03/2011 09:36

Mine moved about - nothing to worry about - and it was sore for a little while afterwards.

A&E might not take it out... but the GP or sexual health clinic will definitely huff and puff with you want it out so quickly after having it put in. They huffed and puffed at me when I wanted it taken out after TWO YEARS of terrible moods, weigh gain, spotting... gah. I hate the implant.

They're reluctant to take them out after a short period of time as they see it as having 'wasted' £80 of the NHS's money.

JennyPiccolo · 06/03/2011 10:11

They took mine out swiftly when i said it had moved up my arm. It's not meant to do that. Phone the GUM clinic and explain yourself.

Thanks everyone. I almost took it out with a kitchen knife last night but decided to wait til today and give my local minor injuries unit a go, if not then I'll stop at the chemist on the way back and pick up some supplies to do it myself.

ugh, dunno how i managed to post that twice.

howlonguntiltheweekend · 06/03/2011 10:18

Queen - go to A&E please. Do not do it yourself. Do tell them you have said that though about taking it out so that they understand just how awful you feel with it in.

I know when I had mine out that a specially trained doctor or nurse had to do it which was a pain as it meant I had to wait.

Sorry your feeling this way.

I'd ring NHS direct and find out where and who will get it out ASAP.

SerenaJoy · 06/03/2011 11:54

I had 3 implants, so I've had three removed - please please please don't attempt to take it out yourself. If it's making you feel so bad that it's causing you to consider that (and I know they're not for everyone), please tell someone and have it removed properly.

They'll give you a local anaesthetic, make a tiny cut and push the implant out. I've got tiny scars where each of mine came out. The worst bit for me was the anaesthetic, but I'm sure you'll just be glad to get it out and won't care about that!

I've always had mine done at the Family Planning Clinic but as mumbar says, NHS Direct would be a good place to start given it's the weekend.

Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

OmniaParatus · 06/03/2011 12:31

Don't do it yourself, they have to make an incision at the base and then pull it out with surgical tweezers, it's the kind of thing you could easily get wrong if you do it yourself with no pain relief, and even when I got mine removed by a doctor it left a scar.

If you tell the Family Planning Clinic you are pregnant they will take it out right away- I became pg after having the implant in a month and got an appointment within 2 days to have it taken out. Tell them you must have gotten pg before its insertion and they will probably take it out with a quibble.

rubberduckduck · 06/03/2011 12:41

I had one removed after about a month...it made me cringe even with anaesthetic,i could feel it being tugged
The thought of doing it MYSELF Shock makes me want to vom...i cringing like you would not believe reading this thread...please dont do it yourself!
Can you imagine what sort of attitude you are going to get if you have complications/when your GP finds out

YellowDinosaur · 06/03/2011 12:45

Don't go to A&E. They won't take it out. It is not an emergency.

Do as OmniaParatus suggests and tell family planning clinic you are pregnant tomorrow and they will get it out asap.

You may have to wait for a day or 2 but honestly this is MUCH better than taking it out yourself with a kitchen knife - you will almost certainly end up with a big infected scar.

FourFortyFour · 06/03/2011 12:53

I think it is an emergency when it is affecting he mental health so much.

Phone OOH doctors and ask for their advice.

MissDrake · 06/03/2011 12:54

Don't tell lies to the Family Planning clinic.Don't you think it's likely they will do a pregnacy test?
A&E probably won't be able to take it out as you have to be trained in implant removal.
Phone your local sexual health clinic first thing in the morning and explain how bad it is making you feel, mood swings are a recognised side effect and they should be able to get you in as an emergency.

BecauseImWorthIt · 06/03/2011 13:05

Why the need to lie? If it's impacting on the OP's mental health so much, this in itself is reason to have it removed.

But I agree - don't go to A&E as it's not really an emergency. Call your OOH service and see how quickly you can get an appointment.

QueenStromba · 07/03/2011 19:28

Yay! Just had it out at the walk in family planning clinic without any problem :)
