To hate it when DP is referred to as my boyfriend?

Grrr, possibly totally petty but....

I am arranging with the letting agents to have my DP move into the house I rent. I refer to him as 'my partner' in all correspondence.

AgentWoman keeps writing back 'your boyfriend'.

I find this seriously annoying? To me, a partner is someone whom you've chosen for life. I love the word, because it implies an equality and camaraderie about our relationships. We make decisions together, we have fun together - we're partners.

Whereas boyfriend is something you have when you're about seventeen.

AIBU to think boyfriend is trivialising and disrespectful to someone old enough to be renting her own house and that just because we're not married, people should treat our relationship seriously?

use lover

it makes everyone more comfortable

especially at family or work gatherings

I'm not about to get married after 30 odd years just so I can refer to my partner as my husband ..what a ridiculous reason to get married

I couldn't care less if it makes us appear less commited to some people

I think if we can't find a new word ,lover is the perfect word .

Annoying for some ,and sexy for everyone else !

Even though I have been married for 15 years ,I think I just might start using lover... for fun !!!!!!!

Hmm reading my OP back now that I am sober it sound a bit precious, eh?

But in response to PPs:

Casmama we're not just moving in, have lived together for some time, but I moved across the country to take a job and now DP is following me. Agent knows this as previous tenancy was in joint names.

BitofFun precisely.

Poncey & co. Don't want to get married, hatehatehate weddings, and just don't want to. My point is that if grown-ups are living together and are thinking of themselves as life-partners, then people just deal and just the same terminology. It is not like it's a novel concept today - most of my friends in committed relationships and my parents aren't married.

In fact I'm only close friends with one married couple. Does that make me weird?

I hate the word partner and never use it. my boyfriend is still my boyfriend, even though we've been together over 13 years, I'm 30 and we have a baby together.. oh and we're getting married but I also hate the word fiance.. I'll have to get used to husband! lol

There needs to be a new word invented!

'Boyfriend' sounds too young and temporary if you've been together ages and live together etc!

'Partner' sounds like you're gay (with which, nothing wrong before the PC crowd get me but it's inaccurate)

'Lover' sounds frankly very 'Last Tango In Paris'. And in my view, butter should only be used on toast and jacket potatoes.

'Significant other' is just yuk.

'Other half' is best of a bad bunch but still bad.

hmm I hate the word partner. Sounds a bit odd.
But I agree that boyfriend sounds a bit 17!! get married? :D

oldraver · 06/03/2011 19:14

I dont personally like the term partner but if you have consistantly referred to 'him' as partner then that should be respected
