to not want to eat crap meat anymore?

DH seems to think eating any type of meat is better than not eating meat.

I'm fed up of buying shit meat, because that's all we can afford, knowing how the animals have suffered.

I know we are on a budget but it would be managable to eat good meat if we just ate meat no more than three times a week.

He can't seem to understand good quality meat would taste better and says veg wouldn't fill him up Hmm

He says that Tesco meat is farm assured, think he just made that up.

AIBU to think we shouldn't eat meat every night?

If you can get your hands on a good cookbook from the 70s it's a godsend. I'm the proud owner of one of those complete Delia Smith ones (inherited from Great Aunty Ivy) and it has lots of good ideas about the cheaper cuts. There's a whole section on offal Wink .

My top tip for saving money on meat is to use turkey mince whenever you would use beef mince. It's about half the price of a decent beef mince and far better for you. I find that it's way nicer than beef mince - not fatty at all and actually has a meatier texture. I've used it in bolognaise and chilli just like I would beef and for cottage pie I'll add a beef stock cube.

I agree with the people who've recommended panga/river cobbler - it's lovely.

As for whowever said prawns were expensive - value brand prawns are fine and pretty cheap. I'll only buy king prawns when they're on offer - tesco have them on offer for a tenner a kilo quite often though so I stock up then.

peasent do you have a recipe for that stew? Think I might do it tomorrow. Was going to jerk chicken but the stew sounds nice and I like trying new things.

I agree about turkey mince.. and pork mince makes fantastic burgers too.

I made my own (healthier) version of MacDonalds Sausage n Egg McMuffins the other week and they tasted superb. And were very easy to make.

If any of you live near a chinese supermarket, like Wing Yip, go there for your seafood, it is a fraction of the price you pay in the normal supermarkets, and just as good.

Cook him a Quorn recipe and don't tell him...buy meat substiute....sos mix is ok...there are loads of veggi recipies and you shouldnt tell him for few weeks.

Meat every day isn't healthy anyway.

Oh meant to say, a packet of value brand prawns and a couple of eggs would easily do a family of four in a stir fry and cost less than two quid.

Agree with everyone who has said that you can tell the difference between quorn mince and beef mince. My housemate once made a lasagne with quorn without telling me but I noticed straight away.

Also bear in mind that with older recipes that use "cheap cuts" - those cuts may have got fashionable in the meantime and so not be cheap any more.

Quorn gives me raging diarrhoea, and it doesn't taste great.

We eat really well, yes, with cheaper meat, but I'm OK with that, but leaving that out, we eat great fish meals, and veggie and vegan food.

For tea tonight DH and I had fried herring fillets. The nice lady at Morrisons filleted 3 herrings for me, and they were only £1 in all. I had 2 fillets and DH had 4. Pan fried for about a min each side, on high heat. Plus chips and a few veg.

People think herrings are full of bones. I did find 3 large ones so will check fish carefully next time before I cook it. The much smaller bones just cook to softness. I ate herrings when I was quite small, 6 or 7, we were taught as a matter of course how to dissect a whole grilled herring or a kipper. So it is possible! (Though I haven't passed on the skill to my own DC, I must admit)

OP there's a fab cookery book out at the moment called Less Meat, More Veg by Rachel de Thample. My DH is a hardened meat eater but even he has come round to the meal planners in the book. We have a big roast on Sunday, eat leftovers for 3 days, have veg dinner on Thursday, fish on friday, and then whatever we fancy on Saturday.

It is amazing, we are still eating delicious food, it costs less, and we can eat all free range organic meat from the farm shop. I no longer eat meat when outside my home because I don't know its origin.

Personally, I'm all for eating meat, but I think it should be done with respect, and that comes from knowing how the animal was reared, killed, and how you're going to eat it. If you eat too much meat it becomes something that you don't value...

Herrings are lovely, so long as they have the bones removed first.
We like them coated in oatmeal, and they're great on the barbecue in summer.

We eat meat most nights (maybe fish once a week and 1 non meat meal every 2 weeks), i seem to crave red meat but sadly we can't always afford it, i would rather buy better quality and eat it less often rather than eat cheep meat, dh is happy to eat any meat. Our local farm shop does 'buy half a pig for £99', if i had a big enough freezer i think i would buy half a pig or cow Grin.

I could'nt survive on just veg (have tried), i like meat too much.

More details of current eating, which hope will be of use...

We had wild rabbit stew (well Roymond Blanc's mustard Rabbit from the Radio Times to be precise)

One reasonably sized wild rabbit cut into 5 joints, got it from the game stall in local market town, £3.80.

Just don't tell the sensitive what they are eating Wink

Is chorizo high is salt and fat?

I wish I had that game stall near me midnight servant - £3.80 for 5 joints is amazing value.

The problem is we get paid weekly and couldn't afford to buy £100's worth of meat in one go. Even though it would out more cost effective it is just too much of abig outlay for us on one go.

We have a chinese supermarket near us and I have been meaning to check it out.

I have found Lilly Pangasius Fish Fillets on Tesco, Can I cook them as I would say salmon?

Chorizo can be high and salt and fat, but you only eat small amounts so if you're mixing it in with loads of veg / carbs you end up with a meal that averages out at much lower fat and salt (assuming you don't add lots while cooking).

We are lucky in that we have a great farmshop nearby. I can buy 2kg of good mince for 5 quid.

If you want to eat less meat, eat less meat. There's lots of really nice veggie stuff, I'd just stay away from all the pseudo meat products. Veg lasagne made with aubergine, pepper etc is really nice, veg lasagne made with quorn mince is gopping
