To have *never* cleaned my oven?

MooMooFarm · 04/03/2011 18:54

I just can't face it. I did actually buy some Mr Muscle oven cleaner but the instructions made it sound so dangerous I shoved it to the back of a cupboard.

When we moved in I loved the almost new and completely spotless range oven in the kitchen - and for a few weeks I would wipe it round after using it. But over time it's got pretty crusty and now I can't see through the glass door anymore.

But the oven cleaner looks so toxic....

Get the Yellow Pages and get a man out of it. Mine never even flinched when he saw the state of mine and charged £45, for a double oven. The company keeps sending me reminders that I should have it done again, so they didn't run away screaming at the horror that was my manky oven Grin

I reckon I'll pay £45 twice a year and have a beeyootiful oven to show for it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/03/2011 19:33

Do you clean your fridges?

ensure · 04/03/2011 19:34

You can get people to come round and clean your oven?!

BrigitBigKnickers · 04/03/2011 19:43

Mine was in the house when we moved in over six years ago. I had had a few half arsed attempts to clean it (bit of a scrub with a brillo pad.) But it was rather crusty to say the least.

The prospect of cooking for 7 for Christmas dinner spurred me into action...

Called a nice man from Oven Clean. Best £50 I have ever spent. Grin

GOML yes, I clean my fridge often. And kitchen cupboards too, but the oven... nah, like I said, lovely man, wife is a CM and I ask her to make an appointment when I see her at school.

coccyx · 04/03/2011 19:48

clean the glass window bit, then it will appear clean.

nailak · 04/03/2011 19:59

that oven cleaning site dnt cover my area

NotSoPukeyMum · 04/03/2011 20:00

I get someone in too, and for the BBQ before it goes away for the winter. Highly recommended!

NotSoPukeyMum · 04/03/2011 20:02

nailak a normal cleaner may well do it for an extra fee. My old cleaners would for an extra £30 or so.

bythefire · 04/03/2011 20:12

mine just looks like Ive never done it

said · 04/03/2011 20:16

I cleaned my last oven for the first time in 13 years on the day that I moved out and left it for next owner. In fact, he bought if off me. After a half-hearted effort I just left a box of Oven Pride in the kitchen.

SallyBrownEyes · 04/03/2011 20:17

Never cleaned mine, DH did last year and managed to leave some oven cleaner on the sink which I touched and ended up with a chemical burn! Windows open for hours too, it stunk - awful stuff!

carabos · 04/03/2011 20:43

Never cleaned mine, had it 7 years then it stopped working so got a new one. I did occasionally remove the glass window and clean that though - that was quite easy to do.

Deaddei · 04/03/2011 20:43

I have never cleaned mine either but like bibbity I get the oven cleaning man in twice a year.
He came this week and I have just bought new baking trays etc so it looks very new and sparkly.
The rest of my house does not however

MooMooFarm · 04/03/2011 21:16

Well I was feeling a bit better about my manky self until I read GetOrfs post Blush. Once a week? Seriously? Now I feel even scuzzier.

But my fridge is pretty clean - I give it a proper clean out with dettox every few weeks, and wipe the shelves and stuff over in between. The rest of my house isn't manky at all (well, not including behind sofas, under rugs, etc...), it's just the oven I can't face Sad

With Ovenmate I just do mine once a month. Paint it on,leave overnight, wipe off. No scrubbing
Shelves done with Oven Pride just stick them in the bag, soak and leave. Job done. Not labour intensive at all.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 04/03/2011 21:24

My husband always cleans ours [smug]

BulletWithAName · 04/03/2011 21:28

I clean mine every month, so I would say YABU, because mine gets quite dirty in that time. I dread to think what it would be like after a year...

LisaD1 · 04/03/2011 21:32

YABU and I'm glad I'm not coming to dinner! Mine stinks the house out if it's not been cleaned for a while.

Mandy2003 · 04/03/2011 21:36

When the oven cleaning services first started years ago my Mum had hers done. They did the outside of the cooker too, and all the regulo numbers disappeared from the oven control knob! Ever since then all cooking has had to be done by guesswork!!

When I moved into my last flat six years ago I kept the cooker that was there. It wasn't in a foul state so I just brillo'd the door and base and sides and left it at that. Probably put a bit of flash spray round once a year after that.

Moved out recently, the new owner said he'd like the cooker left so I thought I'd better give it a clean. Used Oven Pride (brilliant!!) and do you know, the oven shelves that I thought were matt black the whole time I've been there - TURNED OUT TO BE BRIGHT SHINY CHROME ShockBlush

Morloth · 04/03/2011 21:37

My MIL cleans mine, she always has, even when they would visit us overseas.

I asked her once why and she said it really gave her satisfaction, I wouldn't want to take a cause of her happiness away, so I save it all up for her.

Caoimhe · 04/03/2011 21:41

Why on earth would you need to clean an oven every week? Everything goes on baking trays or in dishes - how can the oven get dirty?
