Death for miscarrying a baby - in the USA!

Cadpat · 04/03/2011 01:44

I was absolutely horrified after watching this news clip, apparently a bill is being proposed that if a woman miscarrys a baby, she be put on trial, with penalty being death.

This is happening in the States. I just don't know what to say... its horrific.

Link here and I checked more news sites and it seems its really not a spoof!!

I can't find anything on it other than the blogs and a huffington post article referring to the blogs, the mother jones site repeatedly crashes my browser.

Also you have ONE crazy legislator proposing a crazy law. No chance it will get through, there are not enough crazy people.

All of the morality aside it would be impossible to enforce, something like 1 in 5 pregnancies end in a miscarriage.

Crazy people are also often attention whores, this guy is clearly one of them.

Madame Deathstare, I agree with your analysis above. Anything else would sound reasonable after this... I despair really, and feel so impotent when I read these sort of laws even being proposed! There should be a law against proposing these stupidities.

MadamDeathstare, I live in Canada, by the way. Alberta. We've got our share of whackalooneys, probably more than the rest of the country, but the majority are harmless and aren't the ruling class... if something like this came up here, I don't know what I would do.

It's real.

Something similarly wacky is proposed every year by a Southern state Republican, the proposal gets a lot of press then is abandoned or reshaped. The only hope is that the wackiness of the proposal encourages genuine debate or awareness of whichever wimmins issue it affects.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2011 13:34

Found the [[http://www.legis.ga.gov/Legislation/en-US/Display.aspx?Legislation=31965 bill]

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2011 13:35

bill

sorry...

thefinerthingsinlife · 04/03/2011 13:38

FFS!

Even in countries like America women are treated as the second class

RantyMcRantpants · 04/03/2011 13:39

Jeez Louise, there are some nutters out there.

I would have been put to death 50 times over as my body doesn't hold on to pregnancies well and I MC'd 5+ times a year when TTC my brood.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 13:45

thefinerthingsinlife since when is America a paragon of wimmin's rights? It's a very reactionary country.

PlasticLentilWeaver · 04/03/2011 13:46

Line 114-120 of the bill Grimma links to specifically excludes miscarriage.

Not to say he's not a loon, nutter, or any other pejorative I might or might not be allowed to use, as he appears to be saying that contraception should not be allowed either Hmm

thefinerthingsinlife · 04/03/2011 13:49

I just thinking that they are meant to be a developed country glasnost

thefinerthingsinlife · 04/03/2011 13:49

I'm

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2011 13:54

It excludes miscarriage 'so long as there is no human involvement whatsoever in the causation of such event.'.

The bill would make it a requirement that all miscarriages were reported and investigated. One hopes that the woman would be assumed innocent until proven 'guilty' - but even this requirement shows an appalling lack of compassion and understanding. So, you have a miscarriage, you are grieving for your loss and you have to turn yourself and your foetus in for investigation to prove that there was 'no human involvement whatsoever'? Shock

glasnost · 04/03/2011 13:58

In the States at the mo though they're going a tad loopy.

It's this

How do you know where i live Madam? I could be in States too. Huge difference though between States fads /fashions and those of other countries is they tend to get exported to rest of the globe. (Whether they like t or not!)

PfftTheMagicDragon · 04/03/2011 14:16

"they" aren't going anywhere, glasnost. One man, talking rubbish. We have a fair few of those ourselves, no? Wouldn't want to be judged on them as a nation though.

RancerDoo · 04/03/2011 14:18

It's not a spoof.

The Republicans have been on something of an electoral roll (pardon the pun) lately and some absolute wackos like the gentleman in question are using it as a chance to flex their (puny) muscles. It won't get anywhere.

If you look at his Wiki entry, he also opposes state schooling and the use of anything other than gold or silver to pay debts. Brilliant. He is very right wing and I am sure the vast majority of Republicans shudder when he opens his mouth.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 14:22

My "they" Pfft was referring to the countries that get Americanised.
