Cadpat · 04/03/2011 01:44

I was absolutely horrified after watching this news clip, apparently a bill is being proposed that if a woman miscarrys a baby, she be put on trial, with penalty being death.

This is happening in the States. I just don't know what to say... its horrific.

Link here and I checked more news sites and it seems its really not a spoof!!

Ah Grimma I obviously skipped that bit. Blush

duchesse · 04/03/2011 14:25

Lunatics like him probably also think that the Taliban are crazed lunatics, even though he's espousing similar or more extreme values to them.

blackeyedsusan · 04/03/2011 14:42

It's the loopy ones that get the press... you don't hear about the vast majority of normal people. "All American tourists are loud" why? becauuse you don't notice the quiet ones!

we get it with all british football fans are hooligans.. (or used to)

GeneralissimoVonBobbington · 04/03/2011 14:53

"so long as there was no human intervention whatsoever".

So if your violent partner throws you down the stairs (and stats show that domestic violence increase and often starts during pregnancy) you (the mother) might be prosecuted because there was human intervention?

Jesus H Macy. I do wonder what planet people like this guy are on.

Spammead · 04/03/2011 15:05

How offensive.

There are very very few people whose very existence I find generally offensive, but this guy made the list. I don't care if he is American, British, Chinese or Russian etc. His views are cock snot of the highest order.

No normal human being would vote for something like this though, so he's probably best ignored.

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2011 16:41

If this bill was passed (which I'm sure it won't be) the main effect would be that women would hide pregnancy for as long as possible, and keep a miscarriage to themselves. Horrible.

lazarusb · 04/03/2011 16:47

We'll be burning witches again next.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 04/03/2011 16:50

Shock There are no words, really.

Oh, and thank you for introducing me to the term 'whackalooney'! Grin

exexpat · 04/03/2011 16:51

I wonder what that bill would do about molar pregnancies - technically a pregnancy, with no chance of it resulting in a live baby, but strong chance of it turning malignant and killing the mother if not removed with a D&C. But I guess women are expendable, even though every sperm embryo is sacred...

Newjobthankgod · 04/03/2011 16:54

Is this the same guy who wanted to make all forms of birth control illegal?

TheCrackFox · 04/03/2011 17:01

He is obviously a loon.

Does he have any idea how many millions of miscarriages happen every year - the police would get nothing done if every single miscarriage had to be reported.

I sure hope he doesn't get re-elected. Any woman that votes for this arse should be ashamed of herself.

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 04/03/2011 17:02

They should propose a bill to make ejaculating anywhere other than in a fertile woman's body illegal and punishable by death too, all those poor little dead sperm!

Newjobthankgod · 04/03/2011 17:05

Sethstar.....that was awesome.

squeakytoy · 04/03/2011 17:08

I am reading this as an anti-abortion bill, and it specifically excludes miscarriage.

Such term does not include a naturally occurring expulsion of a fetus known medically
119 as a 'spontaneous abortion' and popularly as a 'miscarriage' so long as there is no human
120 involvement whatsoever in the causation of such event.

If a man pushed a women downstairs, or did any violent act which caused her to lose the baby, then yes, it is right that HE be punished. I cant see how the law would apply to the woman in that case at all.

Underachieving · 04/03/2011 17:18

When I lost my 3rd pregnancy the GP told me that if you count really early miscarriages which the mother may not even know about that up to 1/3 of all pregnancies result in miscarriage.

That'll bring the population down, murder 1/3 of all the women of child bearing age. There wont be enough little hoes to go round then will there, oh dear, whats a chauvenist to do. I know, I know, how about reclassifying statutory rape as not a crime (paedophilia for all- that's sort the numbers out) and then even better, lets make rape victims who report into suspects too. Yay, Franklin is the bringer of the new age.

On a more serious note, in a country with over 200 million guns, where around half the population are women and the other half owe thier existance to one, why has no one sorted this out yet?

GrimmaTheNome · 04/03/2011 17:27

Under, the bill isn't quite that bad.

But squeaky, its worse than you imply because of the requirement for miscarriages to be investigated to check there was no 'human intervention'. Think through what that would mean for a woman. Sad

RancerDoo · 05/03/2011 08:42

Wonder what he makes of ectopic pregnancies? I've had two and the treatment amounts to an abortion. Not that I had a huge amount of choice if I didn't want the child I already had growing up motherless.

PlasticLentilWeaver · 05/03/2011 09:40

squeaky that was what I thought until grimma pointed out the section saying women who miscarry have to turn themselves and their foetus in for investigation Shock. There's a whole section in what to do if they're in a car, crossing a court boundary etc. It's gruesome.

Honeybee79 · 05/03/2011 09:43

christ on a bike! Shock

There are loons in every nation. We have our very own here.

ManateeEquineOhara · 05/03/2011 09:47

WTF!!! This is just insane. What a disgusting vile individual this person sounds, surely he didn't get elected on this kind of crap though?!

thumbwitch · 05/03/2011 09:49

Already happens in Mexico.
They're fighting it there, trying to stop it - stupid that a so-called advanced nation is trying to go so far backwards.

pigletmania · 05/03/2011 09:59

What an absolute loon! He should be locked up for the safety of all women and everyone else in general. So he should be prosecuted everytime he has an ejaculation as that was a potential baby! Dont think he will be elected somehow

pigletmania · 05/03/2011 10:06

I have had 2 early MC and have accepted it as a normal biological process that is inevitable as the baby wasent meant to be, there must have been something wrong. To blame a woman for what is a course of nature, is astounding, absurd and dowright horrid

Catitainahatita · 05/03/2011 16:48

As Thumb says this already happens in Mexico and some other places (for example Nicarauga). In Mexico they have introduced amendments in state constitutions which extend the "right to life" right back to conception (although in the capital, Mexico City, paradoxically abortion is permitted in the first 12 weeks of gestion).
In general the effect is to make most medical staff in public hospitals suspect all miscarraiges as being botched abortions. If you are really unluckly then one of the staff will report you.
In some of the worst cases, women who have had still births at 20 plus weeks have been charged and imprisoned for the murder of their child ("murder by a direct relation", would be the translation).
This is what pro-life means. It means regarging potential babies as more important than living women. It means treating women who have the misfortune to miscarry or have a still birth as criminals. It means condemning women who seek an abortion to unsafe quacks and then, locking them up for it.
I apologise to those who don't share my opinions for my bitterness, but this kind of law wrapped up in morality as a measure to defend life really makes my blood boil.
I realise the US is unlikely to enact such daft legislation and I am pleased for their citizens. However, I think that the people who write these projected laws are extremely scary and that ignoring them will not help.
