to be completely mystified by people taking a moral stance over sexuality?

I mean, what difference does it make to anybody?

I find Boris Johnson physically unattractive. I cannot conceive of a situation in which I would wish to have sex with him. But there are people out there who not only fancy him, but who have had sex with him. This does me no harm. It harms no other human being. Why would I take a moral stance on this?

If consenting adults wish to have sex, set up home together, whatever, what business is it of anyone else? I just don't get it.

YANBU

kreecherlivesupstairs · 02/03/2011 11:26

Presumably this is in relation to something else, but at first glance YANBU.
I get rather aroused when I see Adrian Chiles but I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea.

QuintessentialShadows · 02/03/2011 11:29

Well said.

I can honestly hand on heart say that I have not come to any harm because Boris Johnson, or whoever, has had sex, with whomever.

Nancy66 · 02/03/2011 11:30

I do quite like it when a politician gets caught out I have to admit - particularly when they've been beating the 'family values' drum.

In fairness BJ isn't one of those politicians and i don't think his extra marital shagging is going to interfer with his job as mayor - so, no, I don't really care.

Lancelottie · 02/03/2011 11:32

I think it stems from the really fairly recent(in historical terms) change of status of homosexuality from being illegal in this and many other countries. I can see, at least in principle, how difficult it could be for an older generation to accept that something that was actually forbidden within their own childhood, or was sternly described to them in terms of a sin, is a natural state of, what, 10% of humanity.

Apart from that, well, it beats me how half the people I know ever got anyone interested in getting up close and personal...

Adrian Chiles Shock Grin

I need a Brew to recover from thattun

worraliberty · 02/03/2011 11:36

Has Boris been caught with his pants down by the way? I'm not really up on the latest news despite having the TV on.

Grandhighpoohba · 02/03/2011 11:37

Yes, it's in response to another thread, but I didn't want to derail that one. It's full of people saying that they are not homophobic, but that they think homosexually is wrong. I just don't understand how morality is applicable to the consenting sexual choices of other people. It's like having a moral stance on eating ice cream, or wearing a jacket. I want someone to spell out for me exactly why they think it is wrong.

One of my friends at work, a normally a sane and reasonable girl woman lady person, is crazy about Martin Clunes Confused

Grandhighpoohba · 02/03/2011 11:42

At least he is funny. A sense of humour can go a long way.

I think it goes back to the 'sin of fornication' and other religious beliefs if you ask me... I am yet to meet ateists or agnostics with a moral stance on sexuality

Takeresponsibility · 02/03/2011 12:02

Ah Grandpoohba don't spoil it - I tease her that it's because she can direct where he puts his head by controlling his speed and direction with his ears.

zikes · 02/03/2011 12:06

I think it's based in religion.

TobyLerone · 02/03/2011 12:07

YABU for making me think about having sex with Boris Johnson. Mind you, I'd do it if I was paid enough.

meditrina · 02/03/2011 12:09

Boris has been caught with his pants down (metaphorically, thank goodness). I thought this was a thread about whether adultery is something relevant to fitness to hold public office.

If so, I can't make up my mind. On one hand I do think that private life is irrelevant to, and that performance in role is the key thing. But I also think that it can be indicator of integrity and character (obviously depending on circumstances and actual conduct), and for certain offices that in itself could be a relevant indicator.

TryingVeryHard · 02/03/2011 12:12

Try French or Italian politics..

Grandhighpoohba · 02/03/2011 12:13

Maybe Boris was a bad choice of analogy.

Takeresponsibility, that's only a good thing if he can breathe through them too!

You are of course quite right. But I am a bit surprised that you are mystified. It has always been thus - people, especially the most 'moral' ones, have always been too interested in the bedroom activities of others.

TryingVeryHard · 02/03/2011 12:21

Ooooooh now that's a thought! Well said Orm

Grandhighpoohba · 02/03/2011 13:00

Yes Orm, I know how common it is. But I cannot for the life of me understand why? How does someone justify that judgement? If I want to say that Murder is morally wrong, I have a range of justifications for that, which most people, religious or not, would agree with. But what possible justification is there for caring what goes on in a stranger's bed?

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 02/03/2011 13:05

People feel they have to condemn something they do not understand. Also judgement is at the very core of religion, so old habits die hard maybe?

chandellina · 02/03/2011 13:09

YABU. It's unsavory to have extramarital affairs and offspring. People and children get hurt, and it does reflect on the person's moral character.

Jcw1 · 02/03/2011 13:32

YANBU I'm only intersested in peoples sex lives if they are sleeping with me ! Although sometimes I do look at random couples when Im out and wonder about their sexual habits !! But I think thats a whole other story :)

TheEvilDead2 · 02/03/2011 13:34

I think I may be responsible for this thread.

The BOris Johnson thing was a joke... I swear Blush
