To wonder why these girls don't dress appropriately?

It's not the worst thing but where I live, little girls of 7 plus seem to carry the same style of bag which women in their 30s do.

It looks odd! They're big, serious looking bags....almost like a weekend bag...dull colours and one strap so they're carrying them like a suitcase full of books. They use them as school bags....they're not even bright or fun like a teen might have...they look like their Mothers bags.

Why?
Is it just round here? They all do it.

It's a big bag. Nobody is going to fit their school books in a Dora rucksack.

Maybe they're vintage Radley... Grin

TrillianAstra · 01/03/2011 11:12

Carrying a big boring bag is hardly 'dressing inappropriately'.

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 11:12

I know they won't have Dora or Disney at 7 plus...bt what's wrong with funky? These kids look like minature women! They're not vintage!

Oh they're not boring though...they're just too old! Matronly even.

I seem to remember there being a trend for "grown up" bags when I was at junior school. Everyone ditched their funky rucksacks and started using very plain canvas briefcase type things.

TrillianAstra · 01/03/2011 11:43

A bag that mums consider 'funky' is probably the last thing they want, sorry.

salsmum · 01/03/2011 11:49

come on op dont you remember carrying your school stuff in those whicker baskets?...or am i just sooo old? Blush

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 12:09

Lol Trilllian! You're right! Ha....get me with my "Mum advice on style"

Sals....I do remember those baskets...I never had one because "That'll last a week!" according to my Mum.

two....it must be bad for their backs mustn't it.

:o

mmsmum · 01/03/2011 12:14

I thought this might be about short skirts, a ton of make-up, stiletto heels, knee length socks, hair like the singer that turned into a junkie, fitted shirts, short ties and tiny jackets even in the snow, and I half expected this to be about prom dresses lol

I can't say I've noticed but will be looking after school today now. My DD has a rucksack

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 12:16

No mmsmum...just bad bags! According to me anyway!

When I was a kid I used to carry my mums old 1960's red leather bag around because I liked it and wanted to use it.

I think it was a Burberry Confused

she had a matching green one as well god knows what happened to them, but maybe the kids don't want kiddy bags maybe they want to look like mummy.

MogadoredMemoo · 01/03/2011 12:24

Maybe they are the kid of bags that the school insist on?

MogadoredMemoo · 01/03/2011 12:24

kind

MogadoredMemoo · 01/03/2011 12:25

or maybe you're just really out of touch with fashion? Wink

I saw a 7 year old wearing school uniform and killer heels in the supermarket the other afternoon.

Hows that for innapropriate?

MackerelOfFact · 01/03/2011 12:42

I haven't noticed this, but I have noticed the secondary school pupils near me wearing eminently sensible footwear and socks! Flat, low DMs or Kicker-type shoes which I hadn't noticed had made a comeback, with long thick socks. Several different schools too, so not a uniform thing. Not a high heel or trainer in sight!

Violet5 · 01/03/2011 12:54

At my daughters primary school last year all her friends had Cath Kidson bags ! My daughter asked for one but i'm to tight didn't have enough money to buy her one, didn't even have one myself.
Guess it wasn't inappropriate but i did think it a little funny, each to their own i guess !

SeeJaneKick · 01/03/2011 15:22

Lol at the KAth Kidston kids! At least they're pretty though...these bags were downright ugly. And no...I'm not out of touch! I suspec it's a case of on kid having it's Mums cast off bag and the other's all thinking "Ooo...she's so cool!"

OP posts:
notrightnow · 01/03/2011 15:27

Maybe the school has a rule that bags must be a plain dark colour, to avoid little girls all being horrid to one another about who has what fancy branded/character rucksack?

thebountymuncher · 01/03/2011 15:28

DD (11) has a big massive handbag for school.
It's black and sort of snakeskin.
I told her it looked like an old lady bag but she did Hmm at me.

EleanorJosie · 01/03/2011 15:32

Fashion.

When I was at secondary it was all Head leather sports bags and mini Head bags for pencil cases. After the Benetton rucksack trend anyway. Clumpy shoes and socks like bandages. Skirt as small as you could get away with. A very thin tie. Slazenger school jumpers instead of the official one.

Primary - you had to have cool trainers - Puma, Pony or Adidas preferably. The cool boys had Le Shark or La Coste t-shirts and Farah trousers. An Ellesse or Kappa coat. Girls - well I spent most of the time trying to look like someone from Fame, or later, Madonna. As much as my mum would allow me. I also thought my Snoopy t-shirt was very cool but I'm not sure that was the case. I was always trying to 'crimp' my hair by putting lots of plaits in at night and sleeping on it.
