not to give DPs mum the recipe for my yummy cereal bars?

Merely because it puts me at an advantage?
I made DP some gluten free cereal bars a while ago as he is a coeliac, and he let his mum and sister try them.
They love love loved them and I duly made another batch just for them.
Now they keep asking me for the recipe.
But...I quite like them having to ask me to make my 'special' treat as DPs mum is a really good cook and he adores her (as well he should, I don't mean in a creepy way).

God, just tell me I am being petty, I should just give her the recipe shouldn't I? She is an utterly lovely woman, I just quite like being better at something than her, that's all..

agree with SDTG. Did no one else read this as an amusing thread? That the OP has already consented to give her MIL the recipe but she is just having a winge about it?

We still make Janet's Fudge Cake in a homage to Mum's cousin so name them after yourself.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 01/03/2011 11:24

I thought Aibu was full of threads like this, ie not particularly serious but a way to get something off your chest that would be too uncomfortable/silly to say in RL. Hardly navel gazing and even if it is, so what?
I totally understand why the op wouldn't want to share. I have a habit of sharing but slightly regret it afterwards. Especially crumble topping, which I have a particularly good recipe for.
You sound too nice not to do it as it will make you feel bad if you don't. Deffo make it your own though, put your name to it.

diddl · 01/03/2011 11:33

Why does she need the recipe-so that she can make them instead of you or is she also coeliac?

verytellytubby · 01/03/2011 11:36

Petty.

malovitt · 01/03/2011 11:42

My mil wouldn't share any of her recipes - now she has dementia and can't remember them.
It's such a shame.

GORGEOUSX · 01/03/2011 11:42

You are being petty. For goodness sake, give them the recipe - there's nothing worse than having to keep badgering someone for a recipe.

People are so bloody precious with their recipes - then when one does finally get the damned thing, it's not precise enough. You are obviously one of those extremely annoying people who want everyone to fawn over the only thing they can make.

If you do get over yourself enough to give them the recipe, please give them precise and accurate instructions.

TheSleepFairy · 01/03/2011 11:48

these?

TheSleepFairy · 01/03/2011 11:49

or maybe these ones?

Mare11bp · 01/03/2011 11:49

This is petty, but so darn funny. You are a girl after my own heart!!!!!

Seriously petty

HappySeven · 01/03/2011 11:59

Thanks, TheSleepyFairy and Aviatrix, I'll try these sometime and call them "Sleepy Fairy Bars" and "Aviatrix Biccies".

Rannaldini · 01/03/2011 12:01

jasminetom · 01/03/2011 12:49

not petty, love your honesty. Keep it a secret!

SoupDragon · 01/03/2011 12:50

FGS, just hand over the recipe. I get a nice kick out of hearing about "SoupDragon's Flapjacks" and assorted teachers compliment me on them after I contributed the recipe to the school cook book.

eandz · 01/03/2011 12:53

my ds is gluten free and i suck at cooking. can i have your recipe? i promise never to give it out and i'll make sure to credit you everytime i give my ds breakfast.

think of my darling ds. he could use your recipe.

puppy dog eyes and pout

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 01/03/2011 13:03

Tell her it's yor Granny's and you are only allowed to pass it onto your children when you are in your dotage Grin

and all of us who NEED it now = PM is a wonderful facilty :)

megapixels · 01/03/2011 13:21

I don't think YABU at all. I've had this happen, where I'll experiment and experiment with different recipes and when I've found something really good everyone asks for the recipe! It's me who's done all the legwork [sob]. I do give the recipe but feel a teeny bit resentful and hope they don't bother to make it (Biscuit for myself).

HappySeven · 01/03/2011 13:28

megapixels, don't you just take that as a huge compliment? If not, why not make a book of all the good recipes and make some money? I hope Jamie Oliver doesn't mind me making his chilli although as I change the recipe slightly perhaps I could rename it "HappySeven Chilli".

BlackType · 01/03/2011 13:57

Still reeling at the idea of people being precious about ... recipes.

MissyKLo · 01/03/2011 14:01

can you pm me the recipe then?!!! bet you won't!

i really don't get people who dont share recipes! i find it really childish i have to admit

euphemia

maybe you will share some of your recipes? you sound lovely Grin

MissyKLo · 01/03/2011 14:03

i really go off people who are so petty about sharing recipes - it is such a horrible trait to have

EleanorJosie · 01/03/2011 14:03

I don't know, I can kind of understand it really if you've worked on something for ages and perfected it. Recipes used to get handed down. I wouldn't be precious about my recipes, mainly because they are not really mine but most of them came from Angela Nilsson I think but I can understand it in the OP's case.

I think I'd say "I'm not sure that I can write it down, or that it would be useful if I did. It's just a handful of this and a spoonful of that really." Wink
