Advice needed re: head injury

Sorry I know it's not an AIBU but I know this has a lot of traffic and just wanted people's opinions.

Picked DD up from after school club at 6 and was met with the carer hand over the mouth with a very apologetic expression. Turns out DD had skidded along the floor and banged into the corner of the radiator. She now has a massive greeny blue lump on her forehead (as well as a red shiny nose)

I know I could google but really don't want to panic myself, so just checking with you lovely people.

DD has said she's slightly sleepy which is very unusual for her (she'd be snoring and still insist she's not tired) particularly at this time of night on a Monday. Her pupils are quite dilated in my opinion - not massive but bigger than normal. She has had some food (both at after school club and little things here) and has been fine and not sick.

Is there anything I should/should not be doing to make sure she's 'ok' ok?

I would take her to a&e your clearly worried, and to be on the safe side you should get it checked out.

Tommy · 28/02/2011 19:19

sometimes if you've had a shock and/or a bump, you o feel a bit sleepy and worn out. If she has eaten and not been sick, I would say she's probably ok. I'm not a doctor BTW - just a mum with boys who bump themselves pretty often!

LittleMissHissyFit · 28/02/2011 19:20

A&E, straight away.

If you are concerned about her demeanour, sleepiness and dilated pupils, trust your gut feeling. Take her to get looked at. It's Monday 7pm, it ought not to be too busy.

idobelieveinfairies · 28/02/2011 19:20

DS had a bad bang last week and we went to A&E.

The doctor asked him what his name was etc..you know them sort of questions.

I was advised if he was physically sick more that twice, seemed confused and hard to wake from sleep then i was to take him back. They said to keep an eye on him for the next 48hrs.

Headaches and dizziness are normal and acceptable now apparently....information changes so quickly nowadays!

Hope she will be ok.

mrsgetonwithit · 28/02/2011 19:21

Get her checked......please.

Then she can snuggle down to sleep and you wont be awake all night checking on her.

pjmama · 28/02/2011 19:21

I'd go to A&E too if you're at all concerned. She's probably absolutely fine and just tired from the upset of hurting herself, but it won't hurt to get her looked at.

ThisIsANiceCage · 28/02/2011 19:21

At the very least call NHS Direct - they seem to have a checklist for this sort of stuff because they ask "have you banged your head" when you call re a urine infection. Hmm

worraliberty · 28/02/2011 19:23

A&E if her pupils are like that.

No point in ringing NHS Direct, they'd never say don't take her to A&E without being able to see her.

ddubsgirl · 28/02/2011 19:23

a&e,better to be safe than sorry,my son did this at school, doc at a&e said the school should have called 999,to this day my son doesnt remember doing it,last thing he can remember was eating his lunch and dad taking him home(the school waited for us to bring twins to nursery rather than call)he had lump size of a tennis ball on his forehead after few days swelling spread down and out and had 2 black eyes, was awful.

LittleNicci · 28/02/2011 19:24

I had to pick DS up from school a few weeks ago as he'd had a nasty bang on the head. The school first-aid lady said he should be OK, but I took him to A&E anyway as he was also complaining of tiredness. All was OK, but definitely better to get checked over, just to be sure.

mrsgetonwithit · 28/02/2011 19:24

be quicker to go to the a and e than ring nhs direct.......

A&E now, then onto the nursery in the morning to ask why you weren't called straight away and advised as to what to do. Angry

abbierhodes · 28/02/2011 21:08

A&E. Now.

QueenStromba · 28/02/2011 21:20

I agree - go to A&E. You really shouldn't take chances with a head injury.

Rhinestone · 28/02/2011 21:25

A & E IMMEDIATELY.

THIS IS A POTENTIAL EMERGENCY.

GO NOW AND IGNORE ANY POSTERS WHO SAY, "It's probably fine."

THEY ARE NOT DOCTORS AND HAVE NOT SEEN YOUR DD.

warthog · 28/02/2011 21:27

a&e

the sleepy bit is the worry. i had this with my dd - better be safe than sorry.

TabithaTwitchet · 28/02/2011 21:34

always should get a head injury checked out. especially since you didnt see it happen yourself you dont know how bad it was. would def go to hospital asap

PfftTheMagicDragon · 28/02/2011 21:34

In these situations, it is best to think about the potential outcomes.

What could happen?

You could take her to A&E, you could feel a bit silly when she is fine.

Or you could not take her and regret it.

Take her to the hospital. Am hoping you have already gone. With sleepiness and pupil worries, I would go.

COCKadoodledooo · 28/02/2011 21:36

I assume as you've not been back then you're at A&E?

When ds2 smacked his head hard we called NHS direct and they sent us straight to A&E. He seemed fine to us (and after being checked out at the hospital it turned out he was fine), but I'd rather a professional told me that than I guessed and got it wrong.

Hope she's ok. Had it just happened btw? Only I'd seriously be questioning why they hadn't contacted you if not.

NorthernGobshite · 28/02/2011 21:36

Casualty NOW
And tomorrow you must make a formal complaint to nursery. It is negligence.

cazzybabs · 28/02/2011 21:39

i hope your dd is ok. it doesn't sound like negligence but it is an accident and they should have filled in a report. i would also want to know about if they had put an ice pack on

GreatBallsOfFluff · 28/02/2011 21:40

Hi everyone, I just want to say thank you for all your advice and well wishes. I ended up taking DD to the minor injury unit (is on the way to the closest hospital) and the nurses there were great. By this time DD had perked up a bit but had told me in the car that she felt dizzy.

She is absolutely fine now though.

I did feel a bit silly being there with DD jumping around the waiting area but you ladies (and any gents) have made me not care about that one bit as I now can sleep feeling reassured.

So again a big thank you to everyone who took the time to leave a message. I always worry that I'm making a fuss over nothing.
