Advice needed re: head injury

Sorry I know it's not an AIBU but I know this has a lot of traffic and just wanted people's opinions.

Picked DD up from after school club at 6 and was met with the carer hand over the mouth with a very apologetic expression. Turns out DD had skidded along the floor and banged into the corner of the radiator. She now has a massive greeny blue lump on her forehead (as well as a red shiny nose)

I know I could google but really don't want to panic myself, so just checking with you lovely people.

DD has said she's slightly sleepy which is very unusual for her (she'd be snoring and still insist she's not tired) particularly at this time of night on a Monday. Her pupils are quite dilated in my opinion - not massive but bigger than normal. She has had some food (both at after school club and little things here) and has been fine and not sick.

Is there anything I should/should not be doing to make sure she's 'ok' ok?

Sorry just a few replies to people -

COCKadoodledooo It happened about half an hour before I picked her up by which time I was on my way home anyway so wouldn't have gotten there any quicker although when she did start telling me what had happened I did question the same thing.

Northern I believe it was just a simple accident rather than negligence - DD tends to be quite careless and clumsy at times.

Cazzybabs yes they filled in an accident form. An icepack was applied immediately along with cold water to her nose.

"always should get a head injury checked out"

If I took DS2 to hospital any time he bumped his head I would be there at least two or three times a week!

pozzled · 28/02/2011 21:45

Glad to hear she is ok, you definitely did the right thing to get her checked out.

NorthernGobshite · 28/02/2011 21:49

Glad all is well, greatballs - by negligence, I meant them not seeking medical attention or contacting you. Hope her bruise goes soon x

PfftTheMagicDragon · 28/02/2011 21:53

knitting - it wasn't just a head bump though, the DD had worrying symptoms following the injury.

GreatBallsOfFluff · 28/02/2011 21:59

Ah sorry Northern - yes would have been absolutely fuming had it happened earlier in the day and they had not told me.

Thanks x

I wasn't disagreeing with the OP, I was quoting another poster who said "any head injury" should be checked out.

DS2 has had enormous eggs on his head which we haven't had checked out. I know the signs to look out for and have phoned GP on one occasion (when he sky dived onto our hard wood floor) but honestly, A&E would get sick of the bloody sight of me!

NorthernGobshite · 28/02/2011 22:03

knitting, I haven't had every head injury checked out either as dd has had so many - she is a clutz - that I know the advice off by heart!

KnittingRocks · 28/02/2011 22:07

I'm glad it's not just me Northern! I find this knee jerk reaction, "OMG, s/he has hit his/her head, off to hospital!" a bit alarmist tbh.

My GP was brilliant after the head vs floor incident (over the side of the arm of the sofa so quite a height) and was able to reassure me by phone without me whisking the poor child off to hospital on a cold dark evening.
