this isn't a who ties their dog outside a shop thread. i went to the co-op at 3.30, it shuts at 4. i was v quick just buying bread etc. there was a sprollie tied up outside on a very very frayed lead, dirty dog etc. initial response was ok mebbe its an old lead and dog has been on particularly muddy walk. the dog was whining barking howling, not just, mums in the shop im going to fuss, but a bit more than that. i bought my stuff and i couldn't walk away, i stayed in the car park thinking that the dog had been abandoned. i wanted to wait to see if someone came out to get him. i waited from about twenty to four til ten past and finally the owner came out. KICKED and then slapped the dog in the snout for whining and went in the chemist next door. at that point i had to go over and say wtf are you doing, your dog is clearly distressed you just kicked it you ahole and now your leaving it again. for my trouble i got told to "eff off you fat bitch its my dog". so. i took pictures of dog and owner, AIBU to think i should report this?

REPORT IT

Forgive me for shouting but that is animal cruelty, well done for saying something and taking photos now take it further and try to get this dog rescued

MmeLindt · 28/02/2011 10:56

KnittedBreast
WTF? Is that really necessary. The OP confronted the woman, took photos and noted reg nr of the car then reported it and is following it up. Why the nasty comment?

mmsmum · 28/02/2011 10:58

Exeter I have just read the other posts and see that you have reported it. I had a bit of an outburst lol

DooinMeCleanin · 28/02/2011 11:00

The Devil Dog pulls on his lead sometimes when he is over excited or there is snow Hmm Maybe I am an unfit dog owner?

YANBU about the rest of it though. Poor dog. I hope it gets resolved, but tbh, I don't hold much faith in the RSPCA, sadly.

Debs75 · 28/02/2011 11:05

I think OP meant why do people complain about their dog pulling when it is a relatively easy thing to train out of them.
Having a dog that pulls does not make you an unfit owner, whinging about it makes you a bit annoying.

And good on you for reporting it

KnittedBreast · 28/02/2011 11:10

mmelindt, reread what you just wrote.

taking photos (against the law? how would you feel if people started taking photos of your pet/child/percieved wrongly parked car etc just because they felt it was their duty to?) honestly?

the fact is she would not have seen the owner "abuse" the dog had she not been waiting around outside "watching" (creepy) for god knows how long in the first place? the dog was a bit dirty and had a thin leash.

If im the only one who thinks thats fucking rediculous I give up.

Punkatheart · 28/02/2011 11:12

This upset me even reading about it. Animal cruelty is growing in our society - it is a very bad sign.

No excuse for animal cruelty - bullies do it and I would report ANYONE if I witnessed it.

KnittedBreast · 28/02/2011 11:14

true but waiting around in case you might witness it? thats something else, for a very special type of person

mmsmum · 28/02/2011 11:15

Knittedbreast are you a troll? You sound like a troll. And no it's not against the law, anyone can go out in public and film anywhere they like, just like google maps, cctv, the news, television etc Creepy to wait to see if a dog has been abandoned? The dog was physically abused and clearly distressed. Maybe someone should treat you like that. In fact I volunteer

DooinMeCleanin · 28/02/2011 11:15

If I saw a distressed dog, tied up on unsafe lead in the rain I would wait with it for a short time and then decide it was abandoned and take it home to warmth and safety.

If the op hadn't seen the abuse does that make it okay? I don't get your point KB. So what if the op waited with the dog for a while. The owner still abused the dog. In public, so god only knows what treatment the poor mutt recieves behind closed doors.

MmeLindt · 28/02/2011 11:18

Knittedbeast
If I were to kick or abuse my child/dog then I would bloody hope that someone would report me.

I don't see it like that. The OP was worried about the dog. She hung about to see if it had been abandoned and when she saw the owner abuse it she reported it.

If we all stand back and say, "Not my problem, Jack", then where does that get us?

How many news stories are there where a pet or a child was being abused and no one stepped in to stop it?

AlistairSim · 28/02/2011 11:19

Well done for repoting it, OP.

Please let us know if you hear anything.

KnittedBreast · 28/02/2011 11:20

no im not a bloody troll.

I just cannot beleive how involved people on here get in others lives, it used to be children (oh my next door neighbours child cries alot, shall i call ss?) and now its fucking dogs that hadnt even suffered any neglect. now people are WAITING around in case they get to glimpse some so called neglect (which by the way i very much doubt even happened, there is a lot of over exaggeration on this site) so they can take pictures and gloriously ring and "save the day". sorry but its fucking stupid and self serving and quite embarrassing to read about.

amusing to read about though

MmeLindt · 28/02/2011 11:21

Fuck off then if we are boring you.

KnittedBreast · 28/02/2011 11:22

far from it ;)

DooinMeCleanin · 28/02/2011 11:23

How had the dog not suffered neglect? It was distressed and no-one came to it. It's lead was thin and frayed and could have snapped - what if it ran into traffic? Fair enough about the dirt I guess. Devil Dog is often more brown and muddy than he is white, but it all paints a very shoddy picture when it's added up. Even without the abuse the owner was not doing her best to ensure her dogs well-being. That's neglect.

Melly19MummyToBe · 28/02/2011 11:24

knittedbreast I would just give up your seemingly pointless point if I were you, you are not going to win. You aren't a dog person I take it? Or even an animal person for that matter. I think I speak for all us animally/doggy types when I say that I wouldve done the exact same thing had I been in that situation. And I agree 100% with mmsmums last post. Maybe someone SHOULD treat you like that. Then see what your opinions are.

Vallhala · 28/02/2011 11:29

KnittedBeast, you're an apology for a human being and have no place in a civilised world. The OP witnessed a crime FFS, and a particularly nasty one at that.

Exeter please report this to the police - it's a crime under the Animal Welfare Act. The RSPCA can only do what you or I can do, which is take out civil proceedings against the woman. Besides the RSPCA aren't known for their speed or sense of responsibility in cases of welfare (AKA apologies as you're a volunteer for them, the volunteers aren't the problem, but as an AR campaigner and rescuer I find them bloody disgraceful).

If you get no joy from either of them please pm me as I have contacts who should be able to help.

Personally speaking, she'd have come out of the shop to find her dog missing had I witnessed it. Yes, that's a crime too, but in my honest opinion a far lesser one than letting a dog carry jon being beaten.

KnittedBreast · 28/02/2011 11:30

im not sure you can presume to have any knowledge about my animal preferences, im commenting on the op waiting and watching someone elses pet BEFORE she even apparrently saw any "abuse".

And im not trying to "win". not everyone is trying to win points!

Vallhala · 28/02/2011 11:31

PS if you're contacting the RSPCA, it's no good ringing the local shelter - you need the Horsham HQ number or at least their 0345 main number.

Melly19MummyToBe · 28/02/2011 11:37

The poor dog was obviously in distress and it's not weird/creepy/against the law etc to wait and see if the dog had been abandoned or was being abused, which it was (abused, that is. not abandoned)! And I was merely pointing out that if you were an animal person who cared about the welfare of animals in obvious distress you would also be for ringing the RSPCA/police. Not all "the fact is she would not have seen the owner "abuse" the dog had she not been waiting around outside "watching" (creepy) for god knows how long in the first place?"

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 28/02/2011 11:38

FFS Knitted, she waited to check that the dog wasn't abandoned, that's all.

Exeter, please let us know when (if? Do they report back to a report?) the RSPCA contact you, will you? This is pretty upsetting to a lot of us.

ZuzuandZara · 28/02/2011 11:40

As Vallhala says, you need to ring the main cruelty line 0300 1234999, not the local shelter. Problem is, without an address or car reg it will be very difficult for them to follow up.

KnittedBreast · 28/02/2011 11:40

does op do the same for possibly abandoned children in parks? what about cars? litter? wondering where it will end....
