Is it worse to be long term unemployed or a smoker ?

I do mean at a personal level, not an economic one.

eg. You are to spend 3-4 hours in the company of an unknown person of the same age and gender as yourself.
There is a choice of:

A) Unemployed for >1 year, non-smoker.
B) Employed for >1 year, smoker.

Do you choose A, B or no preference ?

Would I have to snog them, because I don't want to snog a smoker.

But then are we going out for lunch, because if I were with the long term unemployed I would probably have to pay for both of us. Or go to Greggs for a sausage roll, instead of a fancy restaurant.

EdgarAleNPie · 26/02/2011 14:02

erm easy to answer, unemployed person. don't like the smell of smoke which is always always there.

DH unemployed a long time - not great but ok - if he took up smoking again that would be a dealbreaker OTOH.

if you are trying to weasel our prejudices out of us, there it is.

i'm not sure the reason i wouldn't prefer the smokers company are to do with prejudice....
have been pregnant/ in the company of tiny kids a looong time now, and have come to dislike the smell. As most of my mates either did/do smoke it doesn't mean i think smokers are evil, just that smoking isn't nice.

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:02

Would the smoker be somking, or would the be deprived of cigarettes?

What if the unemployed person stinks too but just not of smoke? You know like B.O, stale garlic or Britney Spear's perfume?

Still trying to make up my mind here Grin

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:06

My SIL is unemployed (for about 8 years) and smokes. Her smoking fucks me off more than her unemployment, but I think that is because when we enter her house it affects my children, and her unemployment doesn't.

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:09

So, really it's like..would you rather spend time with Dot Cotton or Billy's friend Julie Perkins.

cumfy · 26/02/2011 14:13

But surely you understand that by drawing these two groups of people into this survey, you are stigmatizing them yourself!

No it's just an observation, Annie.

Err have you all read some of the smoking threads on here. The majority of mumsnetters think people who smoke are vile and give them such a hard time. They are worse than people with BO because other smelly people aren't trying to kill you and your kids. Hmm

Agree, it's a stupid thread and anyone who comes on to give a serious answer is showing themselves up to be one of the majority who think smokers are soft targets for general bigotry, when the are exercising their rights (what's left of them) to do something perfectly legal.

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:22

Annie, are you my SIL? Grin

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:23

And remember people...SMOKING KILLS.

cumfy · 26/02/2011 14:25

Annie

You appear to be projecting your very obvious dislike for people who stigmatize smokers and the unemployed on to me ...

A person who is asking a question about the relative stigmatization of the 2 groups.

Pointless thread this.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 26/02/2011 14:29

Crazyhorse unemployment would kill if we weren't giving those scum scroungers money for food and a roof over their heads

[tongue-in-cheek!!]

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:29

Pointless, but entertaining while I wait for DS1 to declare himself ready to go out.

CrazyHorse · 26/02/2011 14:33

allsquareknickersnofurcoat, lots of unemployed, homeless people survive living in makeshift shelters and eating out of bins. As long as they keep their wits about them, I reckon they would live as long as a smoker.

I think an unemployed person would have watched more day time TV, so we could chat about 60 min make over and Jeremy Kyle.
