to think that a landlord can't refund your deposit then ask for some of it back?

OK, just typed a really long message then lost it, so this is the shortened version :o

A friend and I have just moved out of a rented property. The estate agent told us that they would be keeping some of our deposit back to pay for repair work, but then refunded us the entire deposit, plus sent us an invoice through the post confirming that the full amount was refunded, and none retained. A week later, they then sent us a letter asking for payment of the money that they had originally said they would keep back from us.
Now we've had a letter from a debt recovery agency, saying that they've been instructed by the estate agents to collect the money from us immediately, or we'll be taken to court.
Now, I've lived in a few rented houses before, and never known a landlord to refund the full deposit, then ask for some of it back. As I understood it, once they've given the money back to you, it's your money again!
Advice from anyone with a legal background would be greatly appreciated, please!

Please, please, let TDS know about this in writing with copies of all the letters from agents and "debt collectors".

When we moved out of the shit hole that was run by a landlord but then switched to a estate management company (called Alpha based in West Ealing stay away from em) we never got a tenancy agreement off them for the 3 years they had control, we had a massive argument with em when they wanted to spray every flat in the whole building for bed bugs while I was pregnant and they constantly denied there was mice in the place.

When we left they deducted £50 off our deposit as some sort of retaining fee which they claim was outlined in the tenancy agreement (which we never had) they all so bitched about us giving them one months notice saying that the rule is 3 months notice we had an argument with them about that as well and told em where they could stick it, I'm sure if you are not given a new tenancy agreement to sign for new rules you are just spost to go by the last one you got are you not?.

I mean they can't change the rules without consultation no?.
