to want to buy a Dyson

We have a new baby so i'm on maternity and our monthly income is reduced. I saved about £1000 before her arrival for emergencys etc.

Our Henry got got wet when a pipe burst over the winter, it still works but it smells bad so we have agreed to get a new vacuum cleaner.

My motto is 'you buy cheap, you buy twice' so I want a Dyson but as they cost around £250 DH is not keen, he says they can't be that good and surely spending £100-£150 will get us a perfectly good Hoover and wont use a quarter of outr savings which need to last what will be a very expensive 9 months.

We have a dog and a cat and a baby and I think it will be worth buying the best as it will work better and last longer. DH says i'm being unreasonable and fooled by advertising but I think there must be a reason they are so popular.

Am I being unreasonable? Are they worth the extra money or are there equally good models at the money DH wants to spend?

I bought a Dyson DC25 a couple of years ago, and so far we've had no problems. It's really good at picking up dog hair, but MIL's Miele is slightly better. I'm not sure if Miele do bagless vacuum cleaners though. That was helpful of me Confused

I didnt like my dyson and it broke down a couple of times. Now have a miele hepa filter one and it is much better and easier to use on the stairs. I dont mind having to use the bags and it makes them cleaner and easier to empty

bemybebe · 23/02/2011 14:39

Miele cats and dogs + brandless bags from amazon. You will never look back.

We have a Dyson, got it second hand for £50 out the local rag. That was 2 years ago. Had to replace clutch last year for £25 but other than that, it works as good as a new one and is still going strong (even with a permanently shedding labrador in the house).

We used to have a Kirby, but gave it away!!! HOW STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Confused

What is all the fuss about henrys? They are awful! Have had to use one in a previous job and now again in my current job. They have poor suction, the floors never look that great after they've been done and the hose/handle thing gives all the staff who use it a bad back.

I have a dyson and would happily reccommend it to anyone but if I had to choose I would go for any upright over a henry.

controlpantsandgladrags · 23/02/2011 15:48

I have a Dyson Ball which I bought 2.5 years ago. Apparently they don't clog or lose suction.......mine does both! Luckily I bought it reconditioned so got a substantial discount. Wouldn't buy one again though.

cocoachannel · 23/02/2011 15:53

I have just replaced my Dyson with a Henry, based on a recommendation here on MN. It is infinitely better than the Dyson.

MikeStand · 23/02/2011 15:59

I have had 2 dysons. Current one is pet hair one. Absolute rubbish. doesn't reach all the way up the stairs and the stuff that comes up when I go over it with bissell hot and wet (or whatever its called) is unbelievable. Always taking the dyson apart and next time i will buy miele. Dyson is a triumph of poncy design over engineering and efficiency.

NancyDrewHadaClue · 23/02/2011 16:02

I love my Dyson - actually I love the two I have (plus the dyson handheld!)

I am assuming the Miele aren't much (any?) cheaper?

Punkatheart · 23/02/2011 16:43

Bosch gets the seal of approval - top of the league - on the Which site. We bought one and it turbo cleans - it is a really powerful industrial hoover. Brilliant.

holymary · 23/02/2011 19:00

We had a Dyson which was useless from day one. We spent hours talking to Dyson repair people down the phone....with them telling us how to take it apart and fix it.Hmm
We have had Henrys since. No complaints at all.

QueenofAllWildThings · 23/02/2011 19:04

We've had a Miele (canister) for 6 yrs and it's great. Not too noisy either.

QueenofAllWildThings · 23/02/2011 19:05

oh and i only use generic bags with my miele.

huffythethreadslayer · 23/02/2011 19:17

I have a Henry after several Dysons and I loathe it. Can't bear it's smug face looking at me resentfully from the corner of the kitchen. Can't bear the fact is has no tool storage. Hate the bags. Hate the fact it tips over when you pull it. Loathe it, loathe it, loathe it.

I want a Miele next time...but DH still loves the Dyson.

saffy202 · 23/02/2011 19:31

I finally bought one last year after keep buying cheaper models that were rubbish. I love it! I think Argos are doing the same deal again whereby you get a £50 gift card with the purchase of a Dyson.

Laska · 23/02/2011 19:38

Ours is a miele hepa and I think it was around £200. Yes the bags are expensive but after the initial hooverings where it sucked up heaps (I thought my carpet was clean!!) the bag isn't that quick to fill. Loads better than the dyson we had which was dire.

Dysons are not worth the extra money. Ours broke after 5 years and that is apparently very normal. They get bad reviews in Which for that very reason.
Builders and decorators always recommend Henrys as being the best and most reliable, so I'd stick with that.
