to want to buy a Dyson

We have a new baby so i'm on maternity and our monthly income is reduced. I saved about £1000 before her arrival for emergencys etc.

Our Henry got got wet when a pipe burst over the winter, it still works but it smells bad so we have agreed to get a new vacuum cleaner.

My motto is 'you buy cheap, you buy twice' so I want a Dyson but as they cost around £250 DH is not keen, he says they can't be that good and surely spending £100-£150 will get us a perfectly good Hoover and wont use a quarter of outr savings which need to last what will be a very expensive 9 months.

We have a dog and a cat and a baby and I think it will be worth buying the best as it will work better and last longer. DH says i'm being unreasonable and fooled by advertising but I think there must be a reason they are so popular.

Am I being unreasonable? Are they worth the extra money or are there equally good models at the money DH wants to spend?

Don't by a Dyson. We spend over £300 on one and it was rubbish.

Well, I have just got off the phone with Dyson and I have never had such good customer service so I will say YES buy a Dyson!

We bought ours (uproght DC18) 3 years ago and they come with a 5 year guarantee. We kept knocking it about when using it Blush and one of the plastic clips that held the main cleaner head on got broken a while back. The other got broken last week and now the cleaner head keeps falling off!

I fully expected to pay for replacement as, basically, we kept bashing it into things so no surprise they broke.

But, the guy on the phone at Dyson has just ordered us a free replacement entire cleaner head (cost on website over £75!!) and says it is all covered under guarantee!!ShockGrin. So not only do we get it sorted for free, I also now don't need to get around to cleaning all the mank and hair off the old roller either!!Grin

Very impressed. They are also excellent at cleaning up the fluff - although the suction is so strong you need to be careful if your carpet isn't well fitted - it'll have it!

I have 2 cats and was going through a Hoover a year ( used to buy ones that cost about 40-70 pounds) and they never lifted all the hairs.
Finally listened to DH advice and bought a dyson when we moved house and it's the best Hoover I have ever used. 3 years on and it's as good as it was first time I used it, I would recommend dyson to anyone. Only con as far as I'm concerned is that it's quite heavy but I've seen that you can get lighter ones now.
Oh and you get a 5 year guarantee with it.

izzybiz · 23/02/2011 12:24

YABU Henry is much better!

COCKadoodledooo · 23/02/2011 12:25

We have one. I wouldn't buy another.

Vallhala · 23/02/2011 12:26

My Dyson is great (3 large dogs, cats and 2 teenagers here). I'm on my second in 10 years and recently called out the politest ever service engineer as over-use made the engine give out.

He replaced the motor, lead and brushes all under the 5 year guarantee and I'm very happy with both machine and aftercare.

DanJARMouse · 23/02/2011 12:30

Stick with Henry!!!

I wouldnt trade my Henry for anything now. Dysons have never interested me due to living round the corner from a "repair" shop once that had rows and rows of "reconditioned" dysons - spelled trouble in my eyes!

Blatherskite · 23/02/2011 12:32

I bought a DC07 when I first left uni. It was great and lasted for years and years. When I replaced it, I got a Baby Animal - A DC22 and it is absolutely useless

Worst £250 I ever spent.

I used to love Dysons but this one has totally put me off

candleshoe · 23/02/2011 12:34

I really hate my Dyson - and I'm getting a Henry professional for my birthday!

chickchickchicken · 23/02/2011 12:38

Ive got a dyson animal upright with rollerball. its fab. weve got dogs and teenagers and allergies so needed a good cleaner. allergy uk recommend it as suction is so good.

our first dyson we had about 7 years. didnt break down at all. we bought the animal version about 6/7 years ago and have had no problems.

if you can wait argos have a sale on their dysons about twice a year with on average £100 off

MrsNorthman · 23/02/2011 12:41

I've had my Dyson for about 8 or so years. Over those years a few things have gone wrong but you just ring them and they send you a new part. I think their customer services is second to none. When this one finally gives up, I shall definately buy another one.

HowAnnoying · 23/02/2011 12:42

DP is a plumber and uses lots of different hoovers and he says Dysons are rubbish, really heavy and awkward.

I recommend the Miele cat and dog.

P.S. FWIW I used to reach the daughter of James Dyson's No. 2! Little girl was lovely but Dad was a ___ (fill in blanks with suitable insult/swearword)

Replaced my Dyson Animal with a Henry Extra a few months ago and have never looked back. Got really sick of constantly emptying/cutting long hair off the rotating brushes which took as long as doing the hoovering. Two teenagers with looooong hair, a labrador and two very furry cats.

Undertone · 23/02/2011 12:51

I hear the Bissell pet hair cleaner is really good. Worth a look.

Capreece · 23/02/2011 12:56

I have a little portable Dyson - it's great for us, but then we're only in a little flat. Had it ages, but it was a hand-me-down from my cousin. No problems so far (at least 6 years old if not older).

personally I;d recommend Freecycle as a first resort - if you get a vacuum for free then it leaves your emergency budget in tact. Even if it only lasts 6 months :-)

x

florenceuk · 23/02/2011 13:06

Just to say - Mieles are great! Why not consider one?

izzybiz · 23/02/2011 13:07

My Henry is in its 12th year now and has never had a replacement part!

Bonsoir · 23/02/2011 13:08

I love my Dyson Smile and with a dog, cat and baby you are quite right to think that a very efficient vacuum cleaner will make a BIG difference to your life.

verytellytubby · 23/02/2011 13:08

I hate my Dyson. I'm getting a Henry tomorrow.

candleshoe · 23/02/2011 13:18

That was 'teach' not 'reach' in my earlier pointless post!

Laska · 23/02/2011 13:19

Get a Miele - heaps better than a Dyson.

WorzselMummage · 23/02/2011 13:31

You can have my dyson I you want ? It's really really useless and annoying.

I can't wait for the thing to die so that I can get a Henry!
