AIBU to wonder if there are any supportive and kind MNers?

I had high hopes when I joined MN that I would find a community of helpful, supportive, kind and caring people ... Mums in other words!

So far I have found a few witty and brilliant characters but mostly every thread I've lurked/posted on has been populated by violently opinionated and judgemental people.

Am I on the wrong threads or is the anonimity of MN the root of the problem. Where are all the nice mumsy types hiding? Are they just lurking so they don't get flamed?

OP posts:

Of course Gibbon! I don't think I ever set out to be a deliberate bitch. It just happens

Habbibu · 22/02/2011 10:57

Actually, I want the OP to come back. I want to know where these academic environments are where people always present reasoned arguments.

BeribbonedGibbon · 22/02/2011 10:59

easy there Habbibooboo

Habbibu · 22/02/2011 11:01

you want some cod liver oil for those joints?

BeribbonedGibbon · 22/02/2011 11:02

lol shirley and habbibu

alas I must leave when I sense the fun is just beginning

I'm off to write my blog where I provide an academic environment where people can comment and present reasoned arguments.

georgeorwell · 22/02/2011 11:08

i imagine the more swivel eyed MNers to be laura ashley clad, church frequenting, cupcake baking stereotypically mumsy types in rl who come on here to flex their repressed bitch muscles.

QuintessentialShadows · 22/02/2011 11:08

Op, in answer to your actual OP. Why do you just lurk on threads? Do you think you are getting a good enough feel for a place by standing on the outside looking in? Should you not take part?

The nice mummies are not lurking, they are taking part, offering their advice. I would say, those who couldn't care less are lurking. Or starting ops like yours. Wink

So Yabu. (Aibu is pretty toxic as a topic though)

If you care, check out Relationships, Health, Education, etc, and be PART of this fantastic community which is Mumsnet. (not to say there are no nice people elsewhere, but I hope you get what I mean)

Habbibu · 22/02/2011 11:08

Me too, although I'm going to pre-school. Perhaps the most reasoned academic environment of all.

ImFab · 22/02/2011 11:22

YANBU.

Any thread can go bitchy on here at the moment. I don't know what pleasure people get in being like that, there is no need for it at all.

Have you just copied hully's list, lovename? Because she is Not To Be Trusted.

DaffadownDilly · 22/02/2011 12:26

Good job I name change all of the time. Wink

hissymissy · 22/02/2011 12:26

I have got some really good support from MN. You will get some judgey pants, but ignore them. The majority are lovely (honest!)

lovenamechange100 · 22/02/2011 12:35

No my list is based on my experiences of folk on here. maryz no judgement there then!

I changed my name to namechange100 when I was going through a very diifiult time with DH and ended up as just keeping it like that!

thumbwitch · 22/02/2011 12:43

OP - there are supportive people on here - you just have to look in the right places and believe me, AIBU is rarely the right place!

But even the most hardbitten vipers on here will occasionally surprise me and come over all supportive - just doesn't happen very often, IME so far. Grin

Habbibu · 22/02/2011 12:44

That's the problem with maryz. She's just so serious all the time.

lovenamechange100 · 22/02/2011 12:50

hmm maybe I should have a spreadsheet then!

With columns for:

Known troll names
Beeeaaattttcchhhhes
Judgeypants
Demonlovers
Le Cliques
Threads to avoid

KazBarTFG · 22/02/2011 12:52

Maryz - really? You see a name and hide the thread? That's fascinating - You really do have a spreadsheet don't you?

Then again, I see your point, I'd cross the street to avoid certain eejits people in RL, so why not on MN?

  • I'm also a newbie and I started a thread like this last week and got a pasting and rightly so!!! Pretty much because my title contained the word 'bastards', what did I learn I hear you ask?

Absolutely nothing!

I respect everyone has an opinion but I have opinions too, but choose to express them in a much kinder way - I don't need to be harsh just because it's the truth, I like to see both sides of an arguement and then give my opinion, on the whole I think I'm a nice person and posting on AIBU does not give me the right to be tactless and in some cases mean.

I have however, received some valuable advice in my short time using MN and I've even managed to have some laugh out loud moments....those times stay with me and the pastings seem to disappear like water off a ducks back...

YANBU to wonder if there are any kind and supportive Mn'ers, but I assure you there are many.
