To make britain a better place.
The work is there.
Rubbish all over the streets.
Public buildings filthy
Not enough supervision at school.
Elderly needing help at home.
Not enough staff to help people eat and drink or reach the toilet in hospital.
Child minders for those working in other jobs.
And much more!
The people are there - all those on benefits.
The money is there - the benefit pay outs.
Many of these sorts of jobs would suit people with school age children.
Need only be part time and the workers should get top ups to give them a minimum wage and a bit more than benefit.
Would it not be fairer for more people to work 20 hours a week than some doing 40 and some none for the same income since minimum wage is about equal to benefits.

Well OP what is stopping all these low paying jobs being created is economics and politics.

The markets have decided that the current level of state expenditure is too high, therefore the government has to cut spending.

All of the jobs you list above are public sector jobs - but there's no money to create them. In fact, there's a distinct lack of money for them. That'll be the cuts the media's been talking about so much lately.

If you want to blame somebody, blame the UK electorate for electing the bloody Tories

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:24

OP, what MrIC said: the government wants to abolish the public sector, not expand it! Where have you been?!

yesthatiswhatithink · 21/02/2011 22:33

hmmmm

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:33

OP I want to add to your list. There are lots of vitally important and useful jobs people could do... how about..

Librarian
Teacher
Local government education advisor
Teaching assistant
After school club worker
volunteer co ordinator
carer
nurse
youth worker
policeman/woman/PCSO
Connexions worker

oh yeah... forgot

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:34

The people are there... all those soontobe on benefits.....

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:37

Maybe the newly unemployed could volunteer to do their old jobs again? After all, these are important jobs and these scroungers are wasting their skills just sitting on their arses all day. They should 'give something back' and earn their benefits at the same time. After all, we don't want hard working tax payers to be funding their lifestyle choice, do we?

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:38

What you're saying is illogical OP, and possibly offensive. Even if it was well-intentioned, your OP was at the very least naive.

usualsuspect · 21/02/2011 22:40

It offended me

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:40

I especially loved the belief that skilled care for other human beings was just about worthy of the minimum wage!!

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:41

Yes, on a reread it was hugely offensive. And really thick!!!

usualsuspect · 21/02/2011 22:41

I wonder what the OP does for a living?

NoSuchThingAsSociety · 21/02/2011 22:42

Wook, I can see the need for the following:

Teacher, carer, nurse, police officer.

The remainder are almost all completely extraneous, in my view.

GypsyMoth · 21/02/2011 22:43

Thought so too

Op where are you?? It's a boring night, come back and entertain us with some more 'ideas' not many supported you with this one, any more??

expatinscotland · 21/02/2011 22:43

Great! When you're in a nursing home and me or someone I know are in there 'volunteering' to look after you because our jobs were considered 'extraneous', I'll remember that.

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:44

Can you get paid for sitting reading the Daily Mail with your mouth hanging open slightly?

usualsuspect · 21/02/2011 22:46

NoSuchThingAsSociety... you can go in a old folks home for deluded Tories

NoSuchThingAsSociety · 21/02/2011 22:49

I won't be in a nursing home...why on earth would I express such opinions if I was planning that exit route??

Nursing homes do work that should be done by families. Yes, old people are annoying and smelly and dirty but they are your f*cking parents so don't expect pther people to pick up the tab for them.

GypsyMoth · 21/02/2011 22:51

So you'd be at home on carers allowance??

Wook · 21/02/2011 22:51

Oh NoSuchThing you do make me laugh. Who on earth do you think plans to end their days in a local authority care home??!!

usualsuspect · 21/02/2011 22:52

What about the old people that have no family? Shall we let them rot?
