mn is a public website. We do not sign up to terms and conditions that say threads may not be discussed outside of mn, on twitter etc...

yep, thread about a thread... big deal.

so - thread started on mn. Another poster tweeted about said thread, came back to the thread and said she'd tweeted about it.

Subsequently posters called for her to be banned for tweeting about a sensitive thread, followed by lots of other nasty name-calling.

Thing is, the thread was public anyway. You don't have to be logged into mn to view it. You don't have to have a button next to each post to tweet about it - all you'd have to do is copy/paste the link into twitter. Once you put your private business on a public website you lose control over what happens to it/who talks about it/tweets about it/potentially writes about it in the press.

To suggest that a poster should be banned for talking about a thread that is on a public website, on another public website is ridiculous.

Mn has hundreds of thousands of hits a day. People are very naive if they think that their private, sensitive business is limited to the few people that post on the threads in question.

And people do discuss mn on twitter. Both in terms of threads/the potential genuineness of posters/the outcomes of threads. It's just that they don't come back on to mn to talk about having done so.

I am going to post one more thing and then I'm done.

I have been on MN in several guises for about four years. I have never in all that time lost sight of the fact that anyone could be reading this. We've all known about the mail lifting articles for years and MN has always been a very public animal. I never thought that anyone was under any illusion that their posts were closeted and protected from the eyes of the world.

In the nicest possible way, when you post a very private thing like that, you are seeking attention. It's a necessary thing to get the help and advice you want. However, you can't seek attention and yet avoid any attention you find less favourable (within reason).

Noone came round to your house, noone did anything 'real' to you. Someone just mentioned your thread to other MNers. I think it's a bit silly to be complaining about it now.

I get that Anyfule, really I do

But it wasn't just mentioning, was it? However you are seeking to minimize it. It was not mentioned in neutral terms at all. That's the difference.

Oh and yes it could have been picked up by an unsympathetic journo. But in fact if an unsympathetic journo had picked it up (unlikely given that hopefully I had not divulged enough information to make me or my children public) the terms used would have been much more careful.

So why do you think that a reminder on top of the sensitive threads is a bad thing?

The difference is of course that I didn't refer to her as being a troll or having her vagina sewn up

And she didnt refer to YOU as that either to be fair..

SoupDragon · 21/02/2011 20:56

Equally, if you don't want to be "talked" about, don't do the internet equivalent of shouting something out in the middle of a busy pub.

What anyfule said. You overshared and regret it. That's all.

DollyTwat · 21/02/2011 21:01

most of my twitter friends are MN'ers Dittany that's why I don't see any difference

if you post on an internet forum asking for advice, it's public.

What does your husband think about it being out there in the public domain SS?

Stupiditysquared · 21/02/2011 21:03

Oh aye. All of them. Never mind though.

I would add the comments that referred to me as a troll, but I've been reminded that this is bad form. You can see down the thread for the references to sewn up vaginas, which are direct quotes. Which if you had read my thread, you would realise was peculiarly hurtful.

Never mind though. I am here , Who's next?

Georgimama · 21/02/2011 21:05

I am not FB friends with anyone on this thread, and as I've already said I don't even have a twitter account.

I'm just posting that I agree with some people, in best Mumsnet old style. That's still allowed, I think. I'm not 14 either (which is frankly a stupid thing to say Dittany and not worthy of you).

SueWhite · 21/02/2011 21:05

I'm not a FB/Twitter person. Just a realist.

People do a lot of crappy things they shouldn't. It's best not to enable such people by posting highly personal details on a public website.

Anyway, the only people who will know it's you are your DH and children. It's not like people at the school gates are going to know what happened.

squeakytoy · 21/02/2011 21:06

SS, it may be a direct quote, but it isnt ABOUT YOU, or certainly doesnt read that way to me..

I didnt see anyone in that thread giving you any stick... there were plenty other at each others throats, but everyone had your best interests in mind, even if they had different views on it..

DollyTwat · 21/02/2011 21:06

so your husband is OK about it being on MN then right?

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 21/02/2011 21:06

no I don't think I've got most of the posters o this thread on my FB. Maybe one or 2 - but certainly not many of them. Unless they've all name changed and not told me

Oh cheap shot Dolly! Perhaps you can tell me my husband's name? No? Thought not.

SueWhite · 21/02/2011 21:08

Ha Dittany, yes but maybe Alouiseg is just being wily! She can hide what she's saying but SS can't...

Incidentally, why hasn't the original thread been deleted? Seems like the sensible option...

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/02/2011 21:10

God, this is depressingly childish.

SueWhite · 21/02/2011 21:10

"Oh cheap shot Dolly! Perhaps you can tell me my husband's name? No? Thought not."

Exactly. So what's the big deal?

'some people are spiteful' - well, shock horror probe. I never realised.
