Name-Change if you want to - I have. AIBU to be curious what other people earn?

I am a nurse. Qualified 6 years. Work 30 hours a week.

I earn about 25k (with unsocial hours etc added in)

OP posts:
candleshoe · 20/02/2011 17:47

£36 p.h. self employed - I only work 10-15 hours most weeks rising to 25 hours a week in the summer and autumn.

I used to be the main breadwinner and I kind of miss that little bit of superiority. Blush

shinyshoes · 20/02/2011 17:50

ME -take home pay £557.00 a month for 19.5 hrs a week in a betting shop (3 days @6.5 hours a day)

DH 28k pa. with weekend allowances 37 hours a week as a emergency response he is employed by the local council

A LITTLE SHORT OF 40K between us

shinyshoes · 20/02/2011 17:51

sorry that £975.00 was for a 2 hour day as a Teaching Assitant

BoffinMum · 20/02/2011 18:00

£43k, top of lecturer pay scale in top 25 university. That's about £30k after tax.

Childcare £22k, commuting £5k, that leaves about £3k a year to live on. I can't actually afford to eat in the student canteen Sad.

GMajor7 · 20/02/2011 18:07

Childcare £22K Shock

Me: Professional musician 10K-15K.

Always envied 'high' earners, but threads like this are an education!

chchchchanges · 20/02/2011 18:08

I am paid £52,500 per annum. I am a CEO.
My last job was at £31,000 and I had been internally promoted from a £25k job.

I started out, 20 years ago as a secretary on £65 per week, and after ten years at work I was on £14,000

GwendolineMaryLacey · 20/02/2011 18:12

£11k for 22 hours in central London. I worked out that after taking out travel (2.5hrs a day) and childcare, I schlep up to London every day for £3k pa. Unfortunately, it's still £3k we need but in 18 months time, if no dc2 appears then I'll have to give it up anyway, can't do that and school runs.

Xenia · 20/02/2011 18:14

It's never enough.

Some employed contracts prohibit you from telling anyone by the way so do check first.

JaneS · 20/02/2011 18:16

Really, Xenia, never enough? Sad

boobjob · 20/02/2011 18:16

£36k as Client Executive in the financial services industry

notremotelyintofootie · 20/02/2011 18:19

About £15k tax free as a funded phd student, contracted for 35 hours a week... But... Childcare is £30 an afternoon (£1100 full time!) and can't get tax credit help of upto 80% like some, and rent is £1000 a month sonnet enough!

Dh earns about £16k less tax.....

GMajor7 · 20/02/2011 18:19

G'wan Xenia. Spill.

Faffalina · 20/02/2011 18:20

about 22k for boring admin role

thomasbodley · 20/02/2011 18:26

Xenia, it's a gross misconduct breach to disclose your salary where I work.

But it's because of this conspiracy of silence that reigns over the topic that companies can get away with inequal pay policies. As I said in my post, I'm fairly certain my male counterpart is paid more than me.

I'd also be willing to bet that Emsy is being very substantially underpaid because a (male) friend of mine has just left a £100k+ job as a senior associate at a law firm to return to Manchester, and he's not left for £46k Hmm.

Anonymous internet forum threads such as this are invaluable, particularly when they're being posted by people prepared to disclose how long they've been working, and where in the country they work.

PearlBarley · 20/02/2011 18:31

I work for the health service and, after tax, take home about 10p. However, I love my job, only work part time and believe in a state run, free health service for all so it's lucky DP earns enough for me to work for the NHS. Smile

emsyj · 20/02/2011 18:32

I don't work in Manchester - I would get paid more there for a number of reasons - bigger firms, more jobs and therefore more competition for good candidates. I am probably underpaid for my skill set (I do a technical area of law that is heavily in demand in London, less so in the regions) but there are very limited jobs doing this in my local area. It's too far to commute to Manchester with having DD tho so am stuck with it at the moment.

I got paid lots in London because I worked at a Magic and got top of bonus (for being super duper like!)

Xenia · 20/02/2011 18:49

Well thomas,.. the Equality Act allows wage information exchanges in discrimination investigations although it hasn't quite prohibited clauses in contracts which say you must not generally discuss the pay you receive.

I do think women (some) can be bad at not asking for more pay. I dont' discuss what I earn but it was enough to enable me to borrow enough to pay off my husband on the divorce.

Georgimama · 20/02/2011 18:52

I know I would earn another 6k to 8k basic at my PQE and practice area if I worked in the centre of Bristol. But that would be an extra hour's commute either end of the day plus eye rolling and tutting when I walked out the door at 5.30pm, and it isn't worth it.

darleneconnor · 20/02/2011 18:54

I dont think it should be legal to have employment contracts which make it gross misconduct if you disclose your salary. hopefully the ECJ will do something about this eventually. It is illegal in one of the Scandanavian countries.

alistron1 · 20/02/2011 19:01

Clevernamechange
"Hospital Doctor 4 yrs after graduation.
About 48k before tax. "

Not enough IMHO, you should be paid stacks more than that!!!

My other half earns 43K a year, he is a head of a science dept in a very large secondary school and works at least double his 'contracted' hours...it's taken him 14 years to get to this exalted position.

We have 4 kids, don't claim TC's and after rent (we can't afford to buy) 43K a year doesn't stretch as far as you might think.

I earn 130 quid a month. I am on a placement training as a TA but I work as a dinner lady at my placement school.

curiositycat · 20/02/2011 19:01

Georgie, just because you asked. I'm fixed share plus if that makes sense. Not full equity, but not salaried either. Mind you I earned more when I was straight salaried but that was 2007/2008.

frangipan · 20/02/2011 19:02

9-10k gross per year, working 12 hrs per week for 45 weeks of the year.

SeriousWispaHabit · 20/02/2011 19:08

£32k for 2 days per week, plus £450 daily rate for any one off days, as a GP.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/02/2011 19:09

I am sahm. Dp earned 2k last year. Thank god for tax credits. [dons hard hat]

GMajor7 · 20/02/2011 19:15

I suspect your Wispa cravings are more than catered for on that salary SWH!
