To think that big brand name nappies should be better than cheap supermarket brand nappies?

FFS Ds (6 mos) just woke up soaking wet (2nd night in a row) as we have changed from Asda own brand nappies to Huggies super dooper Super Dry Ones.

I thought I was giving his little bot a treat with posher nappies! We have used Asda ones (came across them by accident and they are wonderful) for the last month and have never had any wet leaks or poop explosions up the back with them. Had problems with Pampers, and Boots nappies before.

AIBU to wonder how these big brand names got so bloody big when they are expensive and basically crap?

YAsooooNBU.
I have friends that swear by pampers and Huggies but they seem to live their life by brand names as from my experience of 3 children they are by no stretch the best nappies out there.
My favourite is Asda nappies and they have had the big boxes on offer for £5 recently so have stocked up, they have been a firm favourite of mine since dd was born 7 years ago and I used to make my mum stock pile and bring them when she visited because we were nowhere near an Asda.

Pampers and Huggies always gave dd horrible nappy rash and my GP said he didn't like the big brands, he said they put so many of the gel chemicals in them that they often do their job too well and also dry the natural moisture in the skin away as well.

FFFS · 19/02/2011 23:17

Oh shit - I'm going to get flamed for not using cloth nappies ar'nt I?

YANBU!

pampers and huggies have always leaked with my 3 dcs, so now i use tesco nappies and they are fab! also agree about the boots ones they are useless!

magnolia74 · 19/02/2011 23:23

Huggies and pampers are crap in my opinion. We have used tesco's own (not the value though) and they were fab! Even did the tiniest for dd4 when she was born at 33 weeks.

Morloth · 19/02/2011 23:23

We get get explosions in everything but Huggies, I think some nappies suit some bottoms better than others.

My sister finds Huggies crap and uses Coles brand (oz supermarket) as they work best for her.

I borrowed a pampers from my neice the other day and had a wee soaked carseat as a result (though it was a girl one so maybe that was problem).

My DS2 is a chubber, I find the really stretchy Huggies provide a better 'seal'. I don't think there is any one better brand, just what fits your DC best/has the absorbent bit in your DC's preferred weeing angle.

Ryoko · 19/02/2011 23:24

I too use Asda as there is an Asda near by but I think the same ones are sold under Morrisons own brand as well as they seem the same, infact all the supermarket ones are probably the same ones as they all seem to say made in germany on em.

You could have the same argument about everything, Tesco cola is as good as the brand names, I'd rather eat the own brand chocolate then the big brands.

your paying for the names thats all to some people they seem to mean something, one thing I want to know is why no own brand baby food/milk? you can get all the wipes, nappies, washes and creams as own brands but not the food and milk?.

gaelicsheep · 19/02/2011 23:26

Not by me. They're not for everyone, especially if like me you've nowhere to line dry.

The big brands are crap IME. They simply trade on the name and dupe new parents who think they're buying the best. But I have to say that Tesco nappies, which I use, don't seem that much cheaper any more. Aldi ones seem just the same though.

LaWeasel · 19/02/2011 23:30

I think it depends a lot on the shape of your baby.

I've been using tesco value recently andthohgh they catch wee/poo fine DD gets really sweaty as they're so plastic, so probably won't bother with them again.

Back to cloth nappies when it's warm enough to dry them I hope, and I can stop trying to find the best cheap brand of disposables...

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 19/02/2011 23:34

Ooh Tasco value pull up pants are fab.
I bought them for ds1 when he was just about dry at night.
They are just plain white no pictures but they are really good and will def use them again when and if ds1 ever needs pull up pants.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 19/02/2011 23:34

Tesco Value pull ups aren't plasticy either just normal disposable stuff.

EricNorthmansMistress · 19/02/2011 23:36

Tesco value gave DS nappy rash but their normal ones, and the asda ones, are brilliant. Pampers are crap and huggies crapper. Huggies always leak.

They're so not better though.
Should be for the price, but it's just not the case.

igetmorelovefromthecat · 20/02/2011 00:08

The Sainbury's own brand Eco biodegradable ones are lovely, they are really soft compared to the big brands and I have had no probs with leaking. I don't do my supermarket shop in Sainsburys but the nappies are so good I stop to just pick up a few packs. They are not expensive either (about £5 a pack).

And I don't feel quite so bad about filling my wheelie bin with them either Grin.

coccyx · 20/02/2011 06:34

The cheap own brands are thick and bulky before the child has had a wee.

noodle69 · 20/02/2011 06:38

The best are Lidls, pampers are ok and huggies are the worst ever made ime

I haven't yet found a brand made by anyone that stops me having to change the nappy twice a night. This morning I have changed Boy all through as he was soaked and poo covered, had already changed his nappy at 2.30am and 10pm last night when he was soaked through as well.

He will never sleep through until we find a leakproof nappy.

Morloth · 20/02/2011 07:53

I have never had a Huggies leak, I liked the nature baby ones in the UK as well, but the are 4x the price here so not going to bother.

bulby · 20/02/2011 08:01

Asda nappies are fab but I found the pant versions tore too easily at the side so moved to sainsbury ones. I am always amazed that so many people automatically go for branded items without trying the cheaper shop versions first.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 20/02/2011 08:06

No huggies leak here either. Pampers were fine till they changed them, now they're shite. Tried Tesco, Asda, Boots own brand and all of them rubbish. Does depend on whether your child is chubby legged/slim waisted/whatever.

chillichill · 20/02/2011 08:57

I prefer the supermarket brands to the big names. hate pampers, they have a really chemically smell to me. huggies natural fit are nice but the super dry leak. never had problems with Tesco or Asda's. gonna try the sainsbury Eco now that you mention them.

BigWoof · 20/02/2011 09:09

i too love the asda own ones. Haven't had a single leak yet!

Mummy2Bookie · 20/02/2011 09:13

Pampers always leak on dd. Huggies started leaking recently, plus the pooh bear design rubs off onto dd's clothes. We have switched to tesco ultra dry and they are brill.

UnseenAcademicalMum · 20/02/2011 09:15

I agree with noodle69, Lidl nappies and pull-ups are great. The tesco ones always seem a bit baggy on ds2's skinny bottom (even though the size is supposed to be OK for his weight).
