To think that big brand name nappies should be better than cheap supermarket brand nappies?

FFS Ds (6 mos) just woke up soaking wet (2nd night in a row) as we have changed from Asda own brand nappies to Huggies super dooper Super Dry Ones.

I thought I was giving his little bot a treat with posher nappies! We have used Asda ones (came across them by accident and they are wonderful) for the last month and have never had any wet leaks or poop explosions up the back with them. Had problems with Pampers, and Boots nappies before.

AIBU to wonder how these big brand names got so bloody big when they are expensive and basically crap?

YANBU Both huggies and pampers were shit and leaked every bloody time but I found asda's own brand work the best for us

Abcinthia · 20/02/2011 09:29

YANBU I swore by Asda nappies when DD was younger becuase they always caught everything and there were no leaks.

weefriend · 20/02/2011 09:36

I found different nappies suited better at different ages and stages. I think it probably does depend on the shape of the baby. You are right though, that the brand ones aren't automatically better at doing the job. They sometimes feel nicer though. It's all a bit of a moveable feast because they keep changing them all the time.

Georgimama · 20/02/2011 09:37

I used cloth until I went back to work and then put DS in disposables as nursery were very catsbumface about having a nappy pail.

I found Boots own brand to be the best, and Sainsburys virtually identical to them. Huggies and Pampers were rubbish.

blackeyedsusan · 20/02/2011 09:40

Huggies don't hold water. pampers are as bad. try tesco own brand. we swapped to them from asdda via huggies and pampers. one of the cheap and cheerful supermarkets do good nappies too but i can't remember which one that people on here have recommended.

bamboobutton · 20/02/2011 09:42

YANBU!

pampers gave dd nappy rash that was so bad it looked like a chemical burn.

i now alternat between cloth and either sainsburys or morrisons own brand.

A TV advertising campaign costs hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Your extra money spent on branded nappies is not going towards a better product, it's paying for some voiceover artist to witter on about 'Golden Sleep' , and that wierd baby that crawls with straight legs.

lillibet1 · 20/02/2011 21:20

I have come to the conclusion that every child is different and as they grow what they need changes currently the best for us are lidil's but over the last few months have had fav's of pampers huggies tesco, sainsbury's, asda, boots biodegradable

Sorry - huggies are great. We gave up on using reusables overnight, and have found that huggies keep him dry all night. Though since he's been on solids we have found they occasionally leak now if we don't change his pooey nappy fast enough. But a bumgenius outer over the top does the trick.

Hate pampers. Nursery uses them and they're so plasticky and thin. May just have to try asda nappies thougb if you all think they're so great!

bubbleymummy · 20/02/2011 22:50

Well considering that Huggies made my newborn DS1 bright red from his knees up to his chest there is no love lost between me and big brand nappies! We used washables most of the time with the occasional moltex but I have actually found the Sainsburys Eco nappies are very good when we had to use them and didn't make my little boy look like a lobster :(

GruffalosGirl · 20/02/2011 23:51

Sainsburys eco are brill nappies, we've used them for ages now and only get pampers or huggies when they are cheaper than own brand because they're on offer.

Whoever was saying that you can't get own brand babyfood I was in Asda last week and they've started selling organic pouches that look like the ella's organic ones. I haven't tried them but they had loads of flavours.

working9while5 · 20/02/2011 23:57

Oh this is great! We've only ever used Pampers but just because that's what our parents used and we are lazy arses who don't apply any independent thought to our purchases wanted to do the same as them.

Sainsbury's Eco, here we come!

jester68 · 21/02/2011 07:42

I tend to use the nappies that I can get the best deal on.

I have never had a problem with pampers or huggies for my nearly 9 month old. She is using huggies at the moment as they were on offer in tesco and had a better deal than buying tesco own.

But usually I use tesco own ones and they are also great.

Also love tesco own wipes.

nymphadora · 21/02/2011 07:57

Asda , boots or natures own here. Not impressed with pampers

safetydemo · 21/02/2011 09:23

Asda all the way here, their nappy cream is fab too.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 21/02/2011 10:54

I agree with CTJ alot of the price of the big BRAND nappies goes into expensive advertising & brand promotion.

I've pretty much always used own brand nappies from whatever supermarket I'm shopping in - usually Sainsburys or Tesco. They work just fine. I stock up on special offers - very rarely pay full price for them.

edam · 21/02/2011 10:58

I once went to the Pampers R&D labs in Germany. Was a very strange experience. Parents get free nappies in return for allowing their children to be testers. Weirdest thing was the toddlers - saw one standing on some kind of bench, with a hosepipe going into their pull-ups to pre-load them so the Pampers people could see how long it took before the ruddy thing fell off. Couldn't help but think those children are going to need a LOT of therapy when they are adults.

Anonymousbird · 21/02/2011 10:58

Tesco main brand (not the value ones - didn't try those) were the best for us.

Hardly ever had any problems right from the smallest sizes through to pull-ups. And DS could wee for England and they STILL held out. Only occasionally, as an older child (ie. 3-4 yo) would one possibly leak due to sheer volulme on an overnight 7am-7pm... he also used to fiddle with his willy, so it would stick out the side which didn't help.

We soon sorted it by re-jigging his drinking habits to get more wee out of him before bed time!

Anonymousbird · 21/02/2011 11:00

EDAM - Shock

That just conjures up the strangest mental picture.... sure it was all absolutely fine, and of course they need to test, but it just seems/feels weird!

Lambzig · 21/02/2011 11:28

I really think it depends on your child's shape and size. I got on great with Pampers until my DD was seven months and then swapped huggies worked when she moved to size 4. Had disasters with Boots own brand.

I tried to be eco-friendly with various nappies, but they all leaked (didnt try Sainsbury's though, so will pick some up)

edam · 21/02/2011 11:33

It was indeed very weird! Couldn't help thinking 'you might be saving on nappies now, but how much will all that therapy they are going to need cost...?' Grin
