does anyone else do this or is it just a personal weirdness?

I'm not the only one!!

My record for an odd sock turning up was a year - it's mate was found at the bottom of a sleeping bag and had been there since the year before's camping trip!

pippop1 · 18/02/2011 11:23

The sock monster that lives in the washing machine eats whole socks. He only ever eats one of a pair. Most people have one in their machine but they are invisible.

Crystyclear · 18/02/2011 11:25

host a sock amnesty? ask other residents to get their piles of odd socks and put in your sock basket. guaranteed a few will show up.

togarama · 18/02/2011 11:42

The washing machine in our old rented house definitely did eat socks. We opened it up when we noticed it wasn't rinsing properly and found several baby socks and trainer socks in the water pipe which appeared to have been sucked down the little gap at the front.

I suspect that other washing machined also do this but more efficiently so that the sock goes right down the drain without a trace.

DD has two balls of odd socks. One I know contains 17 because I made her look for the mate of the odds.
Hers shouldn't be too difficult to pair up, they are all brightly coloured.

mrslaydee · 18/02/2011 12:06

I did find one in the garden recently. Had been there all winter.

Skelacia · 18/02/2011 12:06

I can't believe you only have 30! I recently cleaned out my odd sock bag and got rid of all of DDs toddler sized socks that were in there as well as the socks with gingham trim that matched her primary school summer dresses. She is nearly 12 Blush I was hoping that they'd turn up someday but 2 house moves later I have accepted that they never will!

supersewer · 18/02/2011 12:10

perhaps we can have a sock amnesty, between us I'm sure we can manage our sock mountains without EU subsidies!

ashamedandconfused · 18/02/2011 12:15

we all need to post pictures of our odd sock collections and do swapsies

I mean , how many kinds of sock can there be? someone must have the matching one..........

but after a while as a lone sock, mine get used as dusters/floor cloths

fathercandle · 18/02/2011 12:15

YANBU. I can't help keeping odd socks. You never know when the pair might turn up. That one of dd's which I know for a fact was eaten by a washing machine on a campsite in Switzerland? Still got it. You never know.

ratspeaker · 18/02/2011 12:15

I seem to have basketful as well
All odd socks go in it , apaet from DS2s who ALWAYS wears odd socks
Every so often I go radiator fishing, unbent wire coathanger down the back to see if there's any socks fallen down there when drying
Then its pair up time, still seem to have lots of odd socks though

ashamedandconfused · 18/02/2011 12:17

oh, and I always make DH have the socks with coloured toes thesedays otherwise he would wear odd ones every day - different pattern/shade/length, he's hopeless at stuff like that!

NoDiving · 18/02/2011 12:18

Does anyone remember Anthea turners programme where she made a little pegboard for odd socks!? hahahahaa

practicallyimperfect · 18/02/2011 12:20

I have a box. I het immense satisfaction on pairing them up, I normally manage two per session! I then go a bit mad and start searching the house for random socks.

Dh hates wearing odd socks but had loads of similar looking ones when we got married. I have now bought lots with coloured toes to make it easier.

spiderlight · 18/02/2011 12:20

My OH keeps all his odd socks in a suitcase in the loft. An actual suitcase. And it is FULL. They have now travelled with us through two house moves over nearly twelve years and he'd had most of them since long before he met me - his old housemate remembers them. I am fairly sure that he is not going to find their partners now, but he refuses to get rid of them.

Quodlibet · 18/02/2011 12:22

Bin! Bin! Bin!
Odd socks are the bain of my life.
Although they make good dusters if you put them over your hands like mittens and run around feeling up the furniture and surfaces...

slartybartfast · 18/02/2011 12:22

i keep them in the airing cupboard. insisting that one day the partner will turn up.
particularly if you throw one away! Shock

slartybartfast · 18/02/2011 12:24

dh gave a black bag full of his old holey socks away Blush in the salvation army box at the recycling point. they actually should have gone in the Textiles bin.
oh the angst. Blush

hahahaha! I can't tell you how relieved I feel. I really thought most would say 'chuck 'em out you disorganised slut!' And as some have said, I do have the feeling that if I throw even one away the other will then turn up to taunt me.

Bran...are you Anthea Turner? :)

OP posts:
slartybartfast · 18/02/2011 12:35

i admit i did used to keep them in a bag but my dm would keep moving teh bag and upsetting me Blush - they are now in airingn cupboard safe
and i used sort them.
it is now dd's paid job Smile

Niecie · 18/02/2011 12:37

We have at least 30 odd socks too. I really should give up on some them as they are baby socks and the DSs are 10 and 7 now. Blush

I couldn't just throw them out but that is the completer finisher in me.

Dylthan · 18/02/2011 12:41

I had loads at one point so decided to bin them all.

Recently a partner for an odd sock from that bag showed up this would be 4 years and 2 house moves later Shock

Where had it been?

I've started collecting odd socks in a carrier bag at the bottom of the wardrobe again because you just never know when it's partner will re appear.
