went to our local for a wee bar supper, and there was this massive dog wandering around, and kept on coming over to us. he wasnt making a massive effort to get our food, but his head was level to our table which was a bit closer than I would have liked.

I could see the owner of said dog sitting at the bar watching the dog, but not doing anything to stop him, desite the fact that I was clearly not happy with this. In the end I moved a chair to stop the dog from coming near our table. (which owner saw me do, without any effort to call dog away or even apologise.

I didnt say anything to the staff (although I wish I had now!) becuase they seemed to be chatting to this guy, so I got paranoid that I as being the unreasonable one.

was I??

I don't mind dogs in pubs as long as it is trained leave people alone that are not willing to touch it.
I ignore dogs and expect a well trained dog to ignore me.
My dog learned to leave people alone who did not welcome her sniff.

QuickLookBusy · 18/02/2011 09:35

I have a dog, and when we take her to the pub we always keep her on a lead. She loves going to the pub, she gets lots of crispsfuss from old men drinking their pints!

OP you should have just gone over to the owner and said "Your dog is lovely but please can you call him away from our table."

TyraG · 18/02/2011 09:55

lesley33 you're right because dogs don't shed and they never scratch and dog hair and anything that may be attached to dog hair would NEVER become airborne. And I'm sure that none of the pub staff ever pet the dogs or let them rub on their legs. Hmm

Quenelle · 18/02/2011 10:01

YANBU I don't mind dogs in pubs but I loathe dogs begging at tables. The staff should have asked the owner to control the dog.

midori1999 · 18/02/2011 10:25

Obviously the staff/landlord/owner of the pub didn't see a problem and it really is at their discretion. If you don't like it, don't eat there again.

AlpinePony · 18/02/2011 10:28

Oh fgs - if you were "clearly unhappy" why the hell didn't you just say something to the dog's owner rather than just passively aggressively move your chair then whine on mn? YABVU.

Alouiseg · 18/02/2011 10:31

I love other peoples well behaved dogs in pubs, but I wouldn't take mine because he's far too nosey, greedy and over friendly. He's also like a bulldozer and could probably knock everything off a table just by walking into it.

I thought you were going to be whinging about the dog being IN the pub, in which case YABU!

But this is more about bad ownership - I have dogs and children and expect them both to behave in public in a way that is not offensive to other people. YANBU

The best thing to do would have been so say to the owner "As I am trying to eat is there any chance you could keep your dog away from me" some people are too stupid/inconsiderate to come to the conclusion themselves (regarding both the behaviour of their pets and their children!)

PURPLESWAN · 18/02/2011 10:36

This huffy passive/agressive thing is very British isnt it - like when someone huffs behind you in the suppermarket I always think to myself "why dont you just say excuse me instead of making stupid horse noises" THEN I move anyway.

Some people are oblivious to other peoples feelings so unlesss you say "excuse me" loudly or "can you get your large smelly dogs nose out of my lasagne" they will not notice for themselves.

lesley33 · 18/02/2011 11:59

I have taken dogs into pubs, but always dogs that will lie quietly under or by the side of the table. And the dog would always be on a lead.

Yes dogs scratch and shed hair; but so do humans. I really don't think it is a problem dogs being in a pub where people are eating.

supersewer · 18/02/2011 12:08

barking and leaping up to grab your food = uncontrolled, conming over to say hello and smell lovely food smells seems ok to me, I'm sure if it bothered you the owner would have been more than willing to remove the pooch from your table.

Ormirian · 18/02/2011 12:11

The owner should have been keeping the dog under control and away from people he didn't know. No problems with dogs in pubs though as long as the owners are well-trained.

KnittedBreast · 18/02/2011 12:14

i cant stand having dogs around when i am eating, they are slobbery and disgusting. I would have grabbed it by the collar and given it to the owner and said sorry but I dont want it near me when im eating.

yukky horrible things

redpanda13 · 18/02/2011 12:16

Ah butternutsquash22 think yourself lucky. I was in a bar in the west end and a massive dog came over and we patted it. Owner then shows us some sculptures he was working on. Then says he needs to go and see a guy in a pub that does'nt allow dogs about a commission. Promises he will be 5 mins. 2 and a half hours later before he came back. It was chucking out time and I was terrified I would have to take the giant hound home Shock

Avantia · 18/02/2011 12:40

I'd rather have a well behaved dog in an eating establishemnt than children Grin , even my kids !

seeker · 18/02/2011 13:41

Will someody explain to me why it's up to the OP to ask for the dog to be moved away from her table? It's up to the owner to keep the dog away unless they are absolutely sure it's welcome.

Ditto children.

happystressedmum · 18/02/2011 13:43

Totally agree! I think dogs in pubs where food is served is disgusting. Also why is it that the majority of dog owners think that everyone loves dogs?!

Still, you can take your dog to more places than you can your children!

Avantia · 18/02/2011 14:09

Why are controlled dogs disgusting in places that serve food ?

Black lab lying right by fridge as I type Grin

seeker · 18/02/2011 14:26

Theyu aren't! Controlled dogs aren't a problem practically anywhere. This one wasn't, though.

I like dogs in pubs. This dog was just wandering round. He didn't grab anything; his main "crime" appears to be Having A Look.

You should've told the owner you didn't like his dog Having A Look. Dogs are social animals. More so than people, it would appear Grin

SpringHeeledJack · 18/02/2011 14:32

kids in pubs are, of course, another story Wink

DrNortherner · 18/02/2011 14:38

Some friends of ours run a pub and they have a dog, he is not allowed in a food prep area as this contravenes food hygiene laws but there are no laws against dogs being in pubs when food is being served, none at all. Just to clarify that point.

I have taken my dog into pubs but he would be on a lead and kept by our table at all time.

giyadas · 18/02/2011 14:39

"Alright mate? Can you call your dog away just 'til we've finished eating? cheers Smile "
Surely it's just as simple as that?
