to think that a dog in a pub where there is food being served is not on?

went to our local for a wee bar supper, and there was this massive dog wandering around, and kept on coming over to us. he wasnt making a massive effort to get our food, but his head was level to our table which was a bit closer than I would have liked.

I could see the owner of said dog sitting at the bar watching the dog, but not doing anything to stop him, desite the fact that I was clearly not happy with this. In the end I moved a chair to stop the dog from coming near our table. (which owner saw me do, without any effort to call dog away or even apologise.

I didnt say anything to the staff (although I wish I had now!) becuase they seemed to be chatting to this guy, so I got paranoid that I as being the unreasonable one.

was I??

yanbu i love my dogs and often take them to pubs but i dont think its fair to allow them to roam free and go up to people who are eating.

i personally wouldnt mind a dog coming up to me in a pub but i dont think its unreasonable for others not to feel the same

Grin at sheep going into a pup

chickchickchicken · 17/02/2011 22:59

pub

seeker · 17/02/2011 22:59

But why should the OP have to say "move your dog?"

The dog shouldn't have been near enough for her to need to.

Wotznotnow, my younger GSD loves the pub. My village local is far to posh to accomodate dogs but he's welcome in the pub in the nnext village and so, after a 3 mile walk there, he's chuffed to have a bowl of water, share some crisps and have half the village telling him what a lovely lad he is! :)

BooyFuckingHoo · 17/02/2011 23:00

i like a pub with a dog in it.

ChaoticAngelofAnarchy · 17/02/2011 23:02

YANBU

The owner should have kept the dog away from you.

squeakytoy · 17/02/2011 23:02

YANBU but it should be on a lead. I love taking my dog to the pub.. but wouldnt go if I thought there were other dogs in there off the lead, as he is nervous of other dogs and seems to give off a vibe that makes other dogs behave agressive to him... he is fine if the other dogs are on a lead though.

SingingSands · 17/02/2011 23:03

You are an adult (presumably) so why didn't you say something? FGS Hmm

I didnt say anything because that would have involved shouting over, or standing up and walking over across the pub. and as someone who dislikes confrontation, and the possibility that the guy might be hostile towards my request, I didnt fancy it. and anyway, why should I have to get up and explain to someone that no I didnt want their smelly dog standing next to me while I eat, which would in itself disturb my meal.

I did try to get the attention of the staff ho all avoided me when the dog was at my table...

Sorry, I didnt mean to start a dog bashing thread, wasnt the purpose, I actually like dogs, and H2B is a dog lover, but even he stated that any dogs he ever had as a child was not allowed in a room where people where eating.

"Why should I have to say to a 3yr old "Now then, why not go back and see what your Mummy and Daddy are doing?"

It's life, that's all."

You shouldn't!

Children should be under control too.

Its not about being a fan of dogs, sheep, horses or any other animals people take to a pub. If the pub want to serve food, it should at least be a pleasurable experience for you, and the dog owner should have kept it away from where you were eating. Post on tripadvisor if you feel strongly about it, you can review public houses too.

In a minute somebody is going to say something about their dog being better company than most people then I'm going to have to shoot myself.

HowBleddyRude · 17/02/2011 23:29

Butternut

It all seems a bit contradictory - your OP says the dog "wasn't making a massive effort" to get your food and then you say it was effectively begging.

You didn't tell the owner you wanted the dog moved (too far away, would mean shouting) yet you say you were "clearly unhappy".

I don't get how this could have been clear unless the owner had perfect eyesight and, possibly, psychic powers.

YABU to not want dogs in pubs where food is served

YANBU to want to eat without a dog at your table but next time you need to speak up for yourself

DooinMeCleanin · 17/02/2011 23:29

I love dogs but I wouldn't be happy with one staring at my food. Mine have been trained not to do that. They often just sleep on the rug when I am having dinner.

Teenybitsad · 17/02/2011 23:29

I would have told it to sit and given it a scrap or two. Can't help it.

Butternutsquash22 · 17/02/2011 23:48

HowBleddyRude, the guy could see me, but was not withing easy talking distance, so could see me but not speak to me. doesnt need amazing eyesight for that...?

as far as im cocerned, a dog sitting staring at my food is begging.

I dont see anything contradictory about what I've said?

YANBU I would have hated that and I would have nudged it away with my foot (gently) if it's owner made no attempt to move it.

Funny in Egypt the outdoor resturant owners give you water spray bottles to use on the stray cats and dogs that annoy you for food. They're very effective.

LaWeasel · 17/02/2011 23:55

When I lived in Canterbury the local pub had a kitten and a puppy (slightly staggered in age obviously)

There was a sign on the door warning people, but they were lovely! Excellent selling point.

Vallhala · 18/02/2011 00:00

Mastiff or Am Bull? :)

(In response to that he was like a boxer only bigger).
