wy did they mess around with a classic and turn it into a xfactor type audition

OP posts:
starfishmummy · 18/02/2011 15:20

We watched on wed, but didn't bother last night. Maybe it will get better after these auditions were over.
The papers have picked up on the poor woman who was in tears because of her lumpy mash. FOr gawds sake it's MASTERchef; if she can't do non-lumpy mash then she shouldn't be on it!

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/02/2011 15:22

I am so glad I am not the only one who is addicted to New Zleanand masterchef.

It's great. DP can't stand it - he watched it and asked 'who the hell is that chump with Groucho Marx glasses'

Some of the contestants are reallt sweet - but the chefs they get on there are SO pretentious.

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/02/2011 15:23

The first thing they cooked was Thai Tripe Grin

MikeStand · 18/02/2011 15:30

I was on the really old loyd gross man master chef many years ago. Non of this televised audition nonsense. You did the early stages at catering colleges and nobody cried the whole time I was on. We politely shook hands when the result was announced (without an epic pause) and no hugs or kisses were exchanged.

MissJanuary · 18/02/2011 15:39

Am so happy to see this thread as within 5 mins of watching last nights show I said to my husband "oh fuck they've gone and done an XFactor number on it!".
Glad to see most people agree the new format is just stomach churning.

Gerorfmoiland yey for the voice-over man from Come Dine With me for the Royal Wedding commentary and so on. Can we start a petition for that please

SexyDomesticatedDab · 18/02/2011 15:43

Bring back the Big Green Ten!

Though Mr Grossman was ace in that version of the programme - last saw him a few months ago playing guitar in his punk band at a local music pub...

Anyone remember when Gary Rhodes took it over - now that was how to ruin a programme.

ktwiltshire · 18/02/2011 16:11

i am in love with the aussie one, have watched in with baited breath since the beginning, the junior aussie was was amazing, those kids could do things that i couldnt do given all the time in the world!

i like some of the new format, but the family and crap voiceover does it no favours. shame they cant have the sponsership like the aussie one (BBC...) as the prizes are SO much better!!

bacon · 18/02/2011 16:44

India Fishers running commentry - "20 exceptional chefs" - you what???? at this stage they are a few that are not "exceptional". I would assume the semi finals will prove who is exceptional.

Suppose things have to change but I'm sure once we are into it we'll get back to loving it.

5Foot5 · 18/02/2011 17:07

Still not sure.

The first two did seem to concentrate more on the people than the food, which annoyed me.

OTOH this way they do get down to their serious contenders quite quickly so maybe the remainder of the series will have the time to do some good stuff.

With the old format it did mean that for several weeks of heats it was a bit same-y

However, I miss the invention test. I wish that the auditions had shown this because there was always the chance that someone would totally lose their head and try to use everything or else produce a memorably bad combination. There was also the satisfaction of saying "Oh I would make such-and-such" and then seeing if anyone else came up wit that.

In summary - I think I will reserve judgement until I have seen a few more episodes.

TalkinPeace2 · 18/02/2011 17:21

Too much people, not enough food, techniques, hints and ideas
Watched Kate Humble rolling cinnamon - MUCH more interesting.

JoBettany · 18/02/2011 17:29

I agree OP. I used to love Masterchef but switched it off about halfway through on Wednesday night and didn't bother last night.

My favourite part has been taken away. I loved the mystery ingredients and some of the hilarious things the contestants would make. There was a sense of tension (sometimes).

This new programme is just pants. The families being there, the tea trolleys, the aprons...they just don't appeal to me at all.

I hope they don't mess with Masterchef the Professionals!

Wotznotnow · 18/02/2011 17:55

cyb - lol, me neither
just get on and cook the thing
and I wish they'd stop wiping their sweaty faces and balding heads on the tea towels

cjbk1 · 18/02/2011 19:32

just what OH and i were saying (thats its too X factor) it was great how it was im so cheered to find this thread on here Wink

WillieWaggledagger · 18/02/2011 19:37

will it change once they've got their shortlist, or will they keep doing the friends n family stuff?

BiscuitBob · 18/02/2011 20:50

I loved Masterchef, but not liking this new format at all. Glad I'm not the only one! What was wrong with the old style?

Cousinit · 18/02/2011 20:53

Just give it a chance. I was a bit Hmm when I first saw Aussie version but it quickly grows on you and before you know it you are hooked.

Aseaandthreestars · 18/02/2011 21:03

I was all ready to hate it, but I quite liked it. I'm getting my fix of the old format on one of the cable channels.

I love the kiwi version (dh is a kiwi). We keep shouting the bizarre pronunciations back at the tv.

I wonder if the later rounds will be the same as the earlier series.

CatIsSleepy · 18/02/2011 21:07

'Its the trolley push of shame I can't stand. As they shuffle off, heads hanging, weeping into their pans...'
haha wahwahwah me too-it's like they're wheeling away a corpse or something

i thought greg and john were being rather arch, too

most disturbing

ellie21 · 18/02/2011 21:09

Can't stand it. All the uberdramatic pauses and stupid music. I actually used to like MChef but I can't cope with this version at all.

sayitwithme · 18/02/2011 21:55

Totally agree. YANBU. What have they done. Shame. Shame. Shame.

And in a way, I feel it's worse than x-factor with the humiliations. With x-factor, they kind of americanise it (awful movie-style dramatic music, utterly shite contestants, etc) so you don't really feel too sorry for them. The ones you DO feel sorry for mostly get through on the sympathy vote. But THIS??? They suck you into their life story, hopes and dreams, make you like them as people and then, just when you think "ahhh, just like x-factor, they'll get through on the sympathy vote", they eeek out their humiliating failure in front of your very eyes.

These are dark days for Masterchef, clambering onto the cheesey average-joe-tv-competition bandwagon. I'm usually a champion for change but in this case, bring back the old format.

EmMUK74 · 18/02/2011 22:10

we love it, it's refreshing to see a change. here's our full review article majorloveoffilm.blogspot.com/2011/02/masterchef-review.html

TragicallyHip · 18/02/2011 22:13

IT WILL GET BETTER!

I promise (well hopefully). It took me a while to get used to the Aussie show and I nearly boycotted but it did improve and now I prefer the format to Uk version.

It needed a revamp, was getting slightly due imo

TragicallyHip · 18/02/2011 22:14

I mean dull not due

vamonosupthekhyber · 18/02/2011 22:35

"and I wish they'd stop wiping their sweaty faces and balding heads on the tea towels"

And creepy Gregg getting off on the humiliations, his spatula twitching in his sweaty hands...

Grim all round.

squareheadcut · 18/02/2011 23:48

yes it was totally crap how they did it, i didn;t watch it again after the first one
