"Wolfy" on death row - would I be unreasonable to swoop in?

Boobz · 17/02/2011 12:09

We live in Sudan and some friends took in some street dogs (strays) a while back when they were about to get shot by the police (who cull them here every few months). They went on holiday and came back to find female pregnant (oops - they had been told by vet that she was too young to get pregnant! - not very pleased with vet as you can imagine).

Female had 8 puppies. They are now 4 months old. All but 1 has found a new home (Wolfy) and he is due to be put to sleep tonight as these friends already have 4 dogs in total and can't keep any more.

I have a DH, 2 kids under 2 and a crazy Weimaraner. Loopy - she drives me mad - I often wish I didn't have a dog (although I do love her dearly, deep down). I really don't have the time for a 6th member of the family, and it's already going to cost us a fortune to ship Jackson, our dog, back to the UK via France in 18 months time. We can't really afford to do it again with Wolfy.

But poor Wolfy. How unlucky is he that all his 7 brothers and sisters found a home and he didn't? Can I let him be destroyed tonight? [remembers final scene from Marley and Me and weeps].

Or should I say sod it, what's one more, and take him in?

My first reaction would be to try to find a family who want a dog. Read the OP.

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 17:48

Page 1. Post 6. Let your friends put him down

Tea time!

Come on my lovely animals, Wolfy lives another day.

MrsBethel · 17/02/2011 23:16

If you've already spent four months trying to find a home for the dog, then allowing it to be put down is noone's first reaction.

Is it mean to allow an unwanted dog to be put down? Maybe it is.

Anyone who eats meat is a thousand times meaner, of course, although that's no excuse. I sense you're also a vegetarian, so at least we can agree on something.

Wolfy slept next to Jackson all night. They get along fine. He's in the bedroom now, but there is only so long before my 2 year old discovers him...

eeek.

We need pics!!

Boobz · 18/02/2011 09:46

Shall take some this afternoon with a friend's camera (ours was stolen recently).

Kids and dog strangely taking him in their stride - no big drama! He's sitting on sofa now, looking sheepish.

We're going to keep him.

(Of course we are, how ridiculous to even entertain the idea that we might "foster" him for a couple of weeks - he was ours when he walked through the door).

Don't think about the money, or trying to walk TWO dogs in 50 degree heat with TWO children strapped to your front and back (DH is away a lot) etc etc etc. IT WILL BE FINE.

Photos later this arvo.

LMAO at "We're going to keep him". Like there was even a question that you even believed you'd be trying to find Wolfy another home after he'd moved in because you were fostering!! Grin

If it makes you feel any better, my mum was in your situation (different part of the world, but my dad was in the same business as you and your DH) and found a dehydrated and ill 6 week old puppy street dog. They were never going to keep him. Said "street dog" was taken to the vet for help, vet said that PTS was an option. That puppy, who is 13 now, snoozes in front of a nice log fire in Surrey and gets walked in the fields and woods every day! He's cost them a bloody fortune, but he's actually priceless.

pencilpotmonitor · 18/02/2011 11:54

Yay for Boobz! Grin
I know I'd have done the same.

coatgate · 18/02/2011 11:56

Fab story QuietTiger. Made me well up! I knew someone who collected a pack of streetdogs in Cairo. When she was leaving I think she found homes for most of them, but brought two of them back to the UK. Lucky dogs....

QuietTiger · 18/02/2011 12:05

It runs in the family, Coatgate! My brother was in Afghanistan and found 3 street cats, 2 of which were injured. He patched all 3 up, 2 now live in Surrey with Street Dog (that IS his name, BTW!), and the third cat is snoring next to me!

Have you ever heard the Starfish story?

The Starfish Story

adapted from The Star Thrower
by Loren Eiseley (1907 - 1977)

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."

Threelittleducks · 18/02/2011 12:45

Boobz you are my hero of the day Grin

What a great thing to do.

Give Wolfy a big hug from me.

Psammead · 18/02/2011 13:14

Omg. I was so scared for Wolfy at the start. So glad you have taken him in!

Btw, your daughter is GORGEOUS!!!

coatgate · 18/02/2011 13:14

Thanks for that QuietTiger. I always try and do my bit.

Re Afghanistan - I know a chap who was in the Marines. When they were up in the hills a puppy befriended them and moved into their cave. When they boarded the helicopter to return to base the puppy jumped in with them. When they landed at Camp Bastion and disembarked, the puppy got out too, and was immediately shot in the head by a sergeant. Sad

QuietTiger · 18/02/2011 13:25

Wouldn't suprise me, Coatgate, as people can be arseholes where-ever they are.

tyzer2001 · 18/02/2011 13:27

Well that just took the smile off my face and the shine out of my eyes Sad

coatgate · 18/02/2011 14:09

Sorry tyzer2001 - didn't mean to rain on anyone's parade.

Let's think happy thoughts about lucky Wolfy instead. Do we have pics yet?

Mibby · 18/02/2011 21:30

(Of course we are, how ridiculous to even entertain the idea that we might "foster" him for a couple of weeks - he was ours when he walked through the door).

Thats exactly how we ended up with our 4th cat. We've had him almost 4 years now, he was only supposed to stay a couple of weeks. I wouldnt be without him and he adores DD, and she him.

Well done for taking Wolfy Boobz hope he has a long, happy life with you

Alouiseg · 18/02/2011 21:45

Well done Boobz. Wolfy is a lucky chap.

seeker · 18/02/2011 21:48

I don;t see how anyone can put an animal in quarentine - they have no sense of time, so all they know is they have been abandoned somewhere horrible for eternity. Cruel and selfish, IMHO.

MoreFruitLoopthanFruitShoot · 18/02/2011 22:00

I'm in this terrible dilemma though Seeker. DH accepted a job in Oz and we have 2 much loved family members dogs who would need to go into quarantine for 1 month. And not even in the city we'll be living in.

It is breaking my heart.

Boobz · 19/02/2011 06:54

Seeker - as mentioned earlier - neither of these dogs will have to go through quarantine - but I agree, for those that do, 6 months is too long.

So, photos here!:

Wolfy and Jackson

Jackson on the right, Wolfy on the left. Altogether now... "Awwwww".

He's doing great - really settling in.

Thanks again for all the nice comments! And thank you Psammead - we think DD's gorgeous too, but we're biased!

tyzer2001 · 19/02/2011 07:57

They're both gorgeous. I hope they'll make great friends.

Ephiny · 19/02/2011 08:19

What a little sweetie, so glad you were able to give him a home :)
