"Wolfy" on death row - would I be unreasonable to swoop in?

We live in Sudan and some friends took in some street dogs (strays) a while back when they were about to get shot by the police (who cull them here every few months). They went on holiday and came back to find female pregnant (oops - they had been told by vet that she was too young to get pregnant! - not very pleased with vet as you can imagine).

Female had 8 puppies. They are now 4 months old. All but 1 has found a new home (Wolfy) and he is due to be put to sleep tonight as these friends already have 4 dogs in total and can't keep any more.

I have a DH, 2 kids under 2 and a crazy Weimaraner. Loopy - she drives me mad - I often wish I didn't have a dog (although I do love her dearly, deep down). I really don't have the time for a 6th member of the family, and it's already going to cost us a fortune to ship Jackson, our dog, back to the UK via France in 18 months time. We can't really afford to do it again with Wolfy.

But poor Wolfy. How unlucky is he that all his 7 brothers and sisters found a home and he didn't? Can I let him be destroyed tonight? [remembers final scene from Marley and Me and weeps].

Or should I say sod it, what's one more, and take him in?

he's having the op right now. I was just saying to my partner, that i spent that much money and what if he doesn't make it..he pointed out that my conscience would be clear forever knowing that i'd done the right thing. Peace of mind. He is right... you can't put a price on that. Can't spend rest of life thinking what if and if only and wondering....

spikeycow · 17/02/2011 16:35

That's lovely. Makes me laugh (not) that in some homes pets get put straight down when they become ill because Mr and Mrs Buttwipe can't afford it, yet they have ipods, designer clothes etc. All that should be sold on Ebay to save a pets life IMO

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 16:35

Your partner sounds lovely and he is right.

What little animal have you got and what OP is he having???

coatgate · 17/02/2011 16:38

So glad you decided to save Woolfy. Hope it all goes well.

coatgate · 17/02/2011 16:40

Where did that extra 'o' come from Confused

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 16:41

Get this- my ExH said last night, that my 6 month old rabbit, was a contender, into part of the reason he left!
ha!

Because he chewed his speaker wires and phone charger! Who cares! Its a fucking wire, that can be replaced.

He claimed to be an animal lover, but it was only on his terms and if they behaved. Bollocks

I hate it when people think, that animals, have to behave like humans. I love it when my animals are naughty!

melikalikimaka · 17/02/2011 16:43

Thanks Boobz, you have a fan here! Smile

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 16:46

I agree totally spikeycow.

Shodan · 17/02/2011 16:53

"But then Mumsnetters prioritise playgrounds over animal welfare on every Waitrose charity box thread so I don't really want to waste my time explaining to knuckleheads "

Not all Mumsnetters, spikeycow. Not this one, at any rate.

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 16:54

hail shodan!

spikeycow · 17/02/2011 16:55

I'll add you to my list of non knuckleheads then

Shodan · 17/02/2011 16:57

I thank you. Grin

ScramVonChubby · 17/02/2011 17:01

Just a minor point before everyone on here throws something at meLOL

Well 2 anyway

  1. Waitrose boxes are not always representative of all mN opinions. That's a fallace from about 5 years ago. not everyone even HAS a Waitrose.
  1. Not all humans have a voice, therefore if I do stray into Waitrose I place my vote in for disabled children as a rule, becuase they are also helpless and quite oftren neitehr as cute as a cuddly kitten (well ine isn;t anyway) nor as community absed as a palyground.

And yes, i do have pets; and I do cat rescue.

DooinMeCleanin · 17/02/2011 17:02

'He claimed to be an animal lover, but it was only on his terms and if they behaved. Bollocks' - DH is like this. My answer is always the same when he says one of the pets will have to go if they don't stop doing x, y or z "Okay. Give me a few days and I will find us a new place. We will be gone by next week"

It might sound silly to lots of people threatening to leave over a dog or a cat, but I couldn't live with someone who felt their pets were disposable and only loved them when they behaved.

MrsBethel · 17/02/2011 17:03

deepbluewave, in what way is it mean to say 'yes, that would be a nice thing to do; and here is an alternative which is quite possibly nicer and which may put less strain on the family'? I wouldn't want the OP to feel they had no options.

BTW, good luck OP, hope it all works out.

coatgate · 17/02/2011 17:09

I used to have a sweatshirt which read

"The more people I meet, the more I love my horse"

Some people were offended by it.

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 17:10

God, that's what he used to say. I laughed, when he said this- at my lucky escape. I told him quite cheerfully- well, when I meet a vet, who is a mad about animals as I am, can understand their behavior a little and doesn't enjoy winding them up- we will all be happy!

Just because none of them like him.

But you get back from pets- what you put into them.

My rabbit groweled at him the other day. I had to explain, to a grown man,, he is a little rabbit, that you tower above. He will have had some basic animal, reaction to exH teasing him

lololizzy · 17/02/2011 17:11

Spikeycow, i sold many (wanted) items on ebay to pay for his op. And put that in the listing ,hoping to get some sympathy bids! I would do anything to raise money for my pets. People shouldn't take pets on if they wouldn't..and should always be prepared for what happens if you lose job etc ..that pet shouldn't have to suffer because of that. It's called, being responsible.
Will never forget when an ex (rich) boss had her kids cat put down because it had fleas and she couldn't be bothered to treat it. She told them it had a heart condition Shock

spikeycow · 17/02/2011 17:12

I'm not objecting to a choice of cancer or childrens charities. It's a personal choice. I don't like posts along the lines of "I would never give to an animal charity". Animal rescue is a very worthy cause, it's nothing to be proud of to say you'd never donate to one like on the Waitrose threads fullofknuckledraggers I can understand giving to a womens refuge, cancer, disabled children and worthy human causes. But who needs a playground when animals are being abused and neglected? Eh?

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 17:15

Mean lady is back

I dont know, I cant remember what rubbish you wrote. Something about 'doing a nice deed being ultimately selfish to make yourself feel better.

I dont know how you worked that out- so why should I explain your post.

spikeycow · 17/02/2011 17:18

But for some people there wouldn't be a choice, because the animal will be killed otherwise. How does giving to a blinds childrens charity negate that

MrsBethel · 17/02/2011 17:21

deepbluewave, you can't just label everyone with a different opinion to you as mean.

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 17:25

No- I know that. But I can call someone mean, who's first reaction to a homeless dog- is to have it put down.

MrsBethel · 17/02/2011 17:39

I'm not sure that's anyone's first reaction.

deepbluewave · 17/02/2011 17:43

"Give 50% of that amount to a charity that saves the sight of vulnerable children. Let your friends put the dog down. "
