to ask if you would use donated breastmilk if it was available rather than formula?

Inspired by another thread.

I personally would rather use donated milk. If you wouldn't - why not?

bubbleymummy- Yes I would feel disgusted putting my baby straight onto a cow's udder, because the milk hasn't been pasteurized and treated, screened e.t.c
Obviously when I buy a tin of formula, all of the aboves been done, and I would much rather give that to my baby than another woman's milk, for the reasons I stated in my last post.

LiegeAndLief · 15/02/2011 13:42

I chose to give ds donated bm rather than formula when he was in SCBU (34 weeks, 5lb4, so not massive massive advantage like it would be for very prem baby).

I don't think this will ever be an issue for healthy babies though, because you would never get enough volunteers to donate, and paying for it throws up all sorts of ethical issues.

JamieLeeCurtis · 15/02/2011 13:42

Totally agree Mila.

Missy - how do you think inflammatory statements like that are going to help someone like Cyclebump?

marzipananimal · 15/02/2011 13:43

but MilaMae it doesn't have to be either or, does it?

MissyKLo · 15/02/2011 13:44

I love the way people who ff always have to state how 'healthy' their babies are like bf has no impact!

Well bf does have a very very big impact - I see the difference all the time, numerous studies talk about both short and long term benefits so there is no way that formula can ever be anything other than something that will allow a baby to stay alive as they won't starve, but breast milk offers numerous benefits to a baby.

bamboostalks · 15/02/2011 13:44

Yes definitely. Always would want to give my baby the very best which bm is.

OhForFucknessSake · 15/02/2011 13:44

"Hey guys here a random thought why not focus on promoting a healthy diet for babies and toddlers????A lifelong healthy diet with exercise will do far more good for a child than 6 months of breast milk and a crappy diet."

what makes you think that breastfed babies are all suddenly put onto mcdonald's happy meas at 6 months? Confused

it is possible for a parent to continue to provide a healthy diet beyond breastfeeding.

TimeWasting · 15/02/2011 13:44

Mila, of course people give a shit about a lifelong healthy diet. Hmm
And breastmilk can be a part of that.

There's a taint of smuggery on this thread ; "I'm great, regardless of how I have tackled all of the many and varied issues relating to parenting, because I breast fed"

MissyKLo · 15/02/2011 13:45

What's inflammatory about stating a fact!! I simply pointed out facts and there is nowt wrong with that

If you want to dismiss the facts as it makes you feel better that is up to you

OhForFucknessSake · 15/02/2011 13:45

"For some reason nobody gives a shit about this and obesity rates continue to soar."

no, there is no focus at all on the obesity problems in the UK Hmm

JamieLeeCurtis · 15/02/2011 13:46

Missy is saying there is more to lifelong health than just breastfeeding.

TimeWasting · 15/02/2011 13:46

Jamie, where?

Journey · 15/02/2011 13:48

Definately not. I would use formula over that any day.

bubbleymummy · 15/02/2011 13:48

Carolina, I'm sorry but I really just don't understand your argument at all! I eat chocolate but I would t feed it to my newborn! Why does what I eat have any bearing on my preference for human milk for a baby whose sole form of nutrition comes from milk?

OP posts:
FreddyTeddy · 15/02/2011 13:48

Mila I agree that I would rather money be spent on ( though not sure how?) improving childrens diets generally rather than milk banks for older/healthy babies just so they don't have to use formula.

But I really think that we need more investment for milk banks that supply tiny premature and very sick babies, which is totally different. Look here and you'll see the frankly piss poor provision that currently exists. www.ukamb.org/yourmilkbank.html If you are in the north or scotland there is hardly any provision at all.

MissyKLo · 15/02/2011 13:48

Jamie

You are beginning to sound very insecure simply because some of us here believe in the goodness of bf and that there are certain facts that you can't get away from. Noone is being smug, look at why you feel so threatened by passion for bf rather than label
Some of us as smug

OhForFucknessSake · 15/02/2011 13:48

someone always throws in the smug comment on these BF/FF threads. it is far to much an emotive topic for it ever to be debated properly.

bamboostalks · 15/02/2011 13:49

milamae
You have some real misunderstandings of human biology if you think that a bfeeding mum is damaging her baby through eating mc donalds! I would rather eat Mcs three times a day, and bf my baby than give even one bootle of formula.

JamieLeeCurtis · 15/02/2011 13:49

Missy - inflammatory - because I think it's the experience of many people who have had problems with breastfeeding, that the help is simply not there. It may not be there for Cyclebump (although I hope it is). So then she's failed.

I do agree breastmilk offers advantages over formula. But there are lots of other variables. contributing to a healthy life.

Bm can be part of it but it's not the be all and end all.

If you feed your dc on a healthy diet and give them a healthy lifestyle they will grow up healthy(bad luck and genetics aside).

There is far too much scaremongering re formula. It may not be the best but it's absolutely fine and if you wean onto a fantastic diet end encourage exercise you're going to have very healthy kids. If you give them fantastic life chances too sorry but 6 months of formula is not worth even being on the radar re worry.

Do you worry if when your dc go through a picky stage at 2(which many kids do)?"oh my god thats it cancer here we come".No of course not as it's all part of a bigger picture ie he'll have years of good nutrition and exercise ahead of him.

There is no need to demonise formula or waste money on bm banks.

Pancakeflipper · 15/02/2011 13:51

Cows eat grass - wouldn't give to a baby either....

TimeWasting · 15/02/2011 13:51

Really alt? Not heard of that.
