To hate the disneyland advert?

The one where the kids are being told that they are going there. We don't have much money and probably won't have a holiday this year but this ad makes my kids stare at the screen with wistful looks on their faces...arrrgh!

Aw I love it but then I love everything Disney.

As someone who goes to Disneyworld 'a lot' I will tell you that there are ways to get there cheaper than booking packages via a travel agent - some of the American Airlines do really cheap flights if you don't mind a stopover in Charlotte or Philidephia and booking your hotel directly with Disney is much cheaper that booking with a travel agent ( at certain times of year you can get free dining too which saves a packet).

That being said we didn't get at Christmas this year as usual as it was just too expensive so I know where you are coming from...

saffy85 · 14/02/2011 21:20

YANBU

It's totally unrealistic imo. Ofcourse the DC are overjoyed but why would the parents be?? The only way you'd get me overjoyed about a trip of Disneyland is dosing me up on Ketamine first.

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 14/02/2011 21:23

I've only been to Disneyland Paris (when I was 18. with dh) and I loved it...I'd wanted to go since I was little and saw the adverts at the beginning of my disney videos!.

I can't wait to take ds but it will only be Paris for the forseeable future, trying to get to the US is much too expensive.

SingingSands · 14/02/2011 21:35

Because of that advert, DD is turning her nose up at our holiday - 2 weeks in a villa on Costa Blanca! It's our first family holiday on our own for 4 years!

Apparently "Spain is rubbish". So... does anyone want a precocious 7yr old house guest for 2 weeks at the end of August? Wink

CountessVonKnackerstein · 14/02/2011 21:38

I think it's a lovely advert.

superfanjo · 14/02/2011 21:48

lol- saffy, countessknackerstain- its too lovely, thats my point but also a little bit of 'kids if your parents really love you they will take you to disneyland!'

I get a tear in my eye when it comes on Blush but I prefer Universal Studios to Disney.

On that basis op no one should watch any adverts because we can't all have everything.

CountessVonKnackerstein · 14/02/2011 22:48

My mum and dad didn't approve of Disneyland, they thought it a waste of money. Hence I always wanted to go - determined to take my kids as soon as they're old enough.
I can just imagine their faces :)

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 14/02/2011 23:01

YANBU - it must be heartbreaking to watch this with your kids knowing you'll never be able to afford to go.

I know there are a lot of adverts for things we can't all have, but this one is deliberately aimed at making parents feel crap if they don't take their kids, it's horrible.

tigana · 14/02/2011 23:03

I hate it because it brings sodding lump to my throat even though I chuffing well know I am being manipulated

IDontThinkSoDoYOU · 14/02/2011 23:05

I took mine to America two years ago and it was exactly like the advert and for that reason, it makes me have a lump in my throat. I will never be able to afford to take them again and I really wish I could.
I don't think you are unreasonable for disliking it but nobody should feel crap. It's just the same as the TV ads at Christmas for overpriced plastic tat!

Bogeyface · 14/02/2011 23:09

We've been and I wouldnt go back if you paid me, but I hate that add for exactly the same reason.

DD3 and DS2 havent been as we took the older ones before they were born and they get all misty eyed over it. Its pester power at its absolute worst imo.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 14/02/2011 23:17

IMO it's much worse than the advertising for overpriced plastic tat - at least most of the population can afford to buy a bit of that from time to time.

BellaMagnificat · 14/02/2011 23:48

I hate disneyland even more than the advertising.

squeakytoy · 14/02/2011 23:52

That other ad annoys me

"have you ever skied down a glacier? why not"

I usually scream at the telly "cos I cant fucking afford to!"

Its just the smug tone of the voiceover that irritates me...

Trifle66 · 15/02/2011 05:14

I think its brilliant marketing as I cried when I watched it - mainly because I couldn't afford to take my DD there (ever) - BTW its my idea of hell on earth but i still want to put a smile on DD's face like that. I also feel sorry for those who can 'nearly' afford to do it, who will be sucked into going by the add.

MoonGirl1981 · 15/02/2011 08:09

My SIL (who's up to her eyeballs in debt) goes on and on about us 'all' going to Disneyland in Florida.

I detest Disney (Dumbo's mum being locked up litterally messed me up for life) and also detest flying.

We can't afford holidays either. Trips to my MIL in London are pretty much all we do and luckily my son loves the museums and stuff so does see it as a 'treat'.

goingroundthebend4 · 15/02/2011 08:27

mine not seen it but i have been saving for the last 4 years to take them next year and no they dont know it yet .but when i priced it theres not much differance between 5 nights in disneyland Paris and 14 nights in FloridaShock

lottiejenkins · 15/02/2011 08:32

My Mum paid for me to take my ds three years ago at christmas. He loved it. He has special needs and was so excited seeing all the characters. It was great getting upgraded to the front of the queues. We went on the Tower of Terror (drops you thirteen feet in a lift!!!) He told me i was a wimp for screaming when we got off!!!

Morloth · 15/02/2011 08:44

We are already saving for our Disney trip in 2015. I love Disney, it is a real holiday for me but I love love love rollercoasters.

As an aside, we did Disneyland LA but Disneyland Paris was way more expensive. There are some good deals about, but I realise that if no holiday is on the agenda then obviously Disney is right out.

Sounds like they have made a very effective advertisement.

spongefingerssavedmylife · 15/02/2011 08:50

YANBU it is a particularly objectionable ad - although not subtle! Just rather nasty really, and I don't normally notice things. My dd's won't be going because it's my idea of torture.

upahill · 15/02/2011 08:50

I waited with dread for years for my kids to want to go to Disney but it never happened.

They have never showed the slightest interest in going and now they are 11 and 15 this year I can't see it happening.

Even the slushy over sentimental adverts can't pursade them!

(However DS2 wants a month in Austrialia at some point which I suspect will be horrificaly more expensive than a two week trip to Florida!)

southeastastra · 15/02/2011 08:52

advert is kack so is disney - manufactured fun :S is the real beauty of the world not enough for some?

mummytime · 15/02/2011 08:55

My kids when they were little used o complain about going to "America again" rather than the IOW or Spain like their friends. We did the USA because we got free flights and after that it was cheaper.
However I do point out to my kids on a regular basis that things are not necessarily as nice as the TV ads (easy with some of the obviously naff games).

I like Disney, but not everyone can afford to go. My kids also love camping (although I don't).

Morloth · 15/02/2011 08:56

southeastastra "is the real beauty of the world not enough for some?"

Nope, I like to ride rollercoasters until I get dizzy and want to throw up.

No even skydiving was as good.
