to think that eggs are a normal staple food to buy?

Random little question that keeps poping up: Is it normal to buy eggs in your normal shopping? I always have done but a number of my friends don't bother.

Eggs are healthy and often make a quick lunch for DS....scrambled, boiled, omelet and then they are all the things like cooking cakes etc.
Is it odd to normally buy eggs?

I might have four a day if I have them in a smoothie and scrambled eggs.

3andahalfmonkeys · 14/02/2011 16:39

i very rarely buy eggs anymore as ds3 is allergic but before ds3 always had them in fir baking or quick meals. eggs are yummy :(

ChippyMinton · 14/02/2011 16:47

I always have eggs. For baking, weekend fry-ups, quick meals for the DC etc etc.

Agree with squeakytoy - if you rarely bake or cook from scratch, you wouldn't use them much.

minipie · 14/02/2011 17:00

I always have eggs, even though I very rarely bake.

Boiled or scrambled eggs for weekend breakfast. Great in a stir fry. Omelette as emergency lunch/supper. Essential for spaghetti carbonara.

They last ages, anyway.

I have 4 hens, so loads of eggs get eaten here. I buy them in winter when the girls are off-lay.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/02/2011 17:36

Aren't you only supposed to eat a certain amount of eggs a week and maybe that is why people don't buy them all the time?

I heard on the radio only today that eggs have less cholesterol now than they used to have because of what they are fed.

I didn't used to buy eggs regularly but now I bake fairly often, and DH works from home so sometimes likes eggs for lunch and - glory be! - fussy egg-refusenik DD last week looked at the omelette I was making for DH, asked to try it and liked it Shock- had a small omelette 3 nights running! Fabulous answer to the 'whats for supper ... oh, I don't like that...' moments

LessNarkyPuffin · 14/02/2011 17:40

Yes. Chickens used to be fed bonemeal, but measures brought in due to BSE this was stopped. As a result the eggs contain a lot less 'bad' cholesterol.

olderandwider · 14/02/2011 18:02

Always have half a dozen in the fridge. The best quick meal around imo. DS loves to fry and scramble them. DD likes to make omelettes. DH and I like a nice egg mayo sandwich too. Amd then there's baking... oh yes, couldn't do without eggs

CameronCook · 14/02/2011 18:08

DH goes to work on a couple of eggs every day. Always have them in - easy meals and baking.

Anonymousbird · 14/02/2011 18:23

I don't buy them, my "girls" knock them out at a fair lick!! Faster than I can eat them - 6 going down the hatch tonight for dinner. Yum yum.

But yes, I would feel lost without at least a couple in the house.. an entirely standard staple food, and very good for you at that. And I would buy them for sure if my girls weren't laying.

Foreverondiet · 14/02/2011 18:57

always have them in case of desire to do impromtu baking.

MardyBra · 14/02/2011 19:04

"I suppose if you buy processed shite food all the time, you wouldnt have any need for eggs.. "

Rarely buy them - only for baking cakes - and we don't generally have many cakes. And don't like them much as lunch time-y food - e.g. scrambled. Prefer soups and salads.

MardyBra · 14/02/2011 19:04

Sorry and I meant to say we don't eat a load of processed shite.

Only DD and DH eat them and we get more than enough from our four hens.

dementedma · 14/02/2011 21:01

get them from a work colleague - chicken and duck - fresh from the farm.
Always have them in for baking, hard boiled and for fried egg sandwiches!

ivykaty44 · 14/02/2011 21:08

Go to work on an egg before Edwina Curriedeggs stuck her are in and upset the egg box Hmm

Eggs are purchased here every week for an omelette or poached egg on toast for breakfast and the baking I do for pack ups or egg mayo sarnies some weeks.

brambleschooks · 14/02/2011 21:11

I haven't bought eggs for two years.

That's when we got the chickens. We now have seven and have fresh eggs every day and lots for cakes. :)

ilovemyhens · 14/02/2011 21:12

I have three hens, so I have too many eggs! Shock

I give them away when they start piling up in the fridge.

gaelicsheep · 14/02/2011 21:13

I buy half a dozen free range eggs each week. When they're gone they're gone.

I do hope none of you buy masses of battery eggs in bulk like people I see in Tesco. Makes my blood boil actually.

squeakytoy · 14/02/2011 21:14

I grew up on a diet abundant with eggs

Boiled with soldiers for breakfast

Egg Mayo sandwiches for lunch...

Boiled eggs sliced with a salad

Poached eggs with Chips and Beans

(not all in one day... )

Eggs are a cheap and nutritious food though, so I am surprised more of you dont used them for your kids lunchboxes. So easy to boil up a load in one go and keep them in the fridge. A hard boiled egg is a good snack food too if you have kids that dont like fruit and you want something quick to take the edge off hunger before dinner time.

Egg mayo sarnies are healthy, and again, a batch can be made up in one go that will last a few days.

TheSleepFairy · 14/02/2011 21:25

We always have eggs in, I make yorkie puds every sunday.

I've never made an omlette though.
