to think that eggs are a normal staple food to buy?

Random little question that keeps poping up: Is it normal to buy eggs in your normal shopping? I always have done but a number of my friends don't bother.

Eggs are healthy and often make a quick lunch for DS....scrambled, boiled, omelet and then they are all the things like cooking cakes etc.
Is it odd to normally buy eggs?

Shiny, I've told you a million times not to exaggerate. :o

kenobi · 14/02/2011 14:03

shinymoon - just to warn you my DD likes eggs despite that she won't eat them boiled - might be worth trying omelette with cheese and other bits and bobs? Goes down a treat this neck of the woods. A drop of milk in the mix makes it sweeter.

Couldn't live without eggs. Omelettes, baking, carbonara, hollandaise, eg mayo yum yum yum....

schroeder · 14/02/2011 14:03

I always have eggs now, but I remember when I was a student I didn't buy them, as they seemed extravagant; an added extra that you didn't really need.

mayorquimby · 14/02/2011 14:04

WOULD EVERYONE STOP SAYING EGGS.
It just seems odd to see it written out so many times.

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2011 14:09

egges

TrillianAstra · 14/02/2011 14:09

eyren

camdancer · 14/02/2011 14:09

We only buy them for baking so we do normally have a few in but sometimes they do go past their use by date. Neither of my DC's or my DH like eating them so I've given up cooking them. I've tried boiled, scrambled, omlettes, french toast. It'd be a great and easy meal but no takers.

Now my sister doesn't ever buy milk or bread. That is odd!

muddyangels123 · 14/02/2011 14:10

I always have hens & duck eggs in the house.
I like the ones from my local farm shop.
My DS2 has had them alot over the last few days as it helps bung you up if you have D&V.
I would consider them a staple tbh.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 14/02/2011 14:13

yes. Always buy eggs.

And always have to reassure my eldest that they are free range.

I made the mistake of telling him once, about the life different types of hens have and now he insists on free range all the time.

I do have a 'mumsnet moment' when we are in the supermarket and my little boy says, loudly, "Are these FREE RANGE? Hens in cages is evil isn't it mum?"

I do think I'm going to come on here one day to find a "poncy conversations in the supermarket" thread Grin

girlynut · 14/02/2011 14:22

Always got eggs, courtesy of our hens Millie, Mollie and Mandie. Very handy to just step outside, collect from the nest box, scrape the poo off and cook.

My neighbours are always knocking asking for eggs too!

annieapple2 · 14/02/2011 14:41

Thank you all for so many reply's. I just thought I would ask for Mumsnet opinion as after 4 friends telling me they don't buy eggs I was beginning to think I was odd but seems I'm not so odd in buying eggs.Grin

I don't buy them, but I do collect them warm from the chickens bum Grin Eggs are very versatile.

TaperJeanGirl · 14/02/2011 14:52

Always have them in my house, always, I wish we could do without (im veggie, only drink soya milk as are the kids, and I dont eat eggs, but the kids, on the other hand, love them every way cooked possibe) I do insist on only buying free range though, nevery battery, hope that makes a tiny difference...

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 14:53

Aren't you only supposed to eat a certain amount of eggs a week and maybe that is why people don't buy them all the time?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/02/2011 15:13

No you can eat millions more now apparently. We'll all be gooing to work on an egg again before long :o

nickelbabe · 14/02/2011 15:16

i hadn't bought eggs for about 3 years before I left ex.
but that's because we kept chickens.
It was very very odd buying eggs for the first few months.

but yes, always have eggs - don't always eat them quickly, but it's very good to have them there.
and once we've got our new chickens, we'll be selling them too!
(first year layers always lay far too many eggs! Shock

LizzieMint73 · 14/02/2011 16:02

I buy a dozen eggs from the 'egg lady' up the road nearly every Saturday (eggy breakfast nearly every day and the occasional cake). OTOH, My sister never buys eggs and phoned me once to:

  1. Ask how to cook the hard boiled egg that her DD had to take to school for some kind of easter related project, and
  2. WTF she was supposed to do with the other 5 she had to buy ?cos you can?t buy less than 6 even though she only needed one?. Lol
LetThereBeRock · 14/02/2011 16:11

Unless you're a vegan, hate eggs or are allergic to them then I'd say they were a staple good for most people.

LessNarkyPuffin · 14/02/2011 16:12

Chicken periods

SummerRain · 14/02/2011 16:16

chicken abortions sometimes.... I've found baby chicks on two occasions from supermarket eggs.

But then I eat black pudding, sweetmeats and all sorts of offaly goodness so it doesn't bother me one tiny little bit Grin

KaraStarbuckThrace · 14/02/2011 16:20

Mmmmm poached eggs on toast.

I need to buy more eggs, made cheesy scrambled eggs for breakfast yesterday!

Ryoko · 14/02/2011 16:21

I don't know what you mean by normal shopping? I go out of my way to buy them from a few independent health shops as the supermarket ones are crap, over priced small and tasteless.

But I think Eggs are a staple diet, good source of protein and sustainable.

FoundWanting · 14/02/2011 16:21

Eggs, bread, milk. All staples and all go together to make the wonder that is Eggy Bread. Grin

squeakytoy · 14/02/2011 16:23

I suppose if you buy processed shite food all the time, you wouldnt have any need for eggs..

I use them for cakes, bread, sauces, breadcrumbed food, yorkshire pudding, to go on toast, to go with fish... pastry glazes, quiches... and loads more...

Ryoko · 14/02/2011 16:32

The nearest I've come to cooking with eggs is an omelet.

I eat the Chinese/Japanese way, (Chinese throw it all in a frying pan and mix, Japanese arrange it all out individually).

I don't do cooking unless it's soup or stir fry.
