Just found out that large retail chaines, i.e Tesco, boots do not give you reward points if you buy formula milk.

Apprarantly its because they think it is un ethical? and want to promote Breast is best

OP posts:
verybored · 14/02/2011 12:50

I don't think they're actually allowed to. I think (not vcertain) that formula cannot be promoted, and that includes clubcard / nectar points.

Gleekfreak · 14/02/2011 12:50

It's only not awarded on the first baby formula-you get points when you move up to 6month plus/toddler-and yes, think it is to promote breast feeding. :)

mistressploppy · 14/02/2011 12:51

I think it's fair enough - like not being allowed to advertise formula as bm substitute

Dropdeadfred · 14/02/2011 12:51

whats wrong ? why are you shocked??

Gleekfreak · 14/02/2011 12:51

That's also why there's never any adverbs for first milk, only follow-on.

MrSpoc · 14/02/2011 12:51

we buy Aptimal 3 and we do not get club card points when we do.

Who are they to say it is unethical.

OP posts:
Eglu · 14/02/2011 12:51

It is standard practice. They are not allowed to. Just as they are not allowed to have it on offer, e.g. 3 for 2

Eglu · 14/02/2011 12:52

I also think it is perfectly reasonable, and I ff both mine from early on.

PatriciaHolm · 14/02/2011 12:52

It's actually against government regulations, so there isn't much they can do about it.

GypsyMoth · 14/02/2011 12:53

It's been like this for years

SnowieBear · 14/02/2011 12:53

Same for all tobacco products at all major supermarkets. A way of distancing themselves, really.

OhForBoonessSake · 14/02/2011 12:54

tehy aren't allowed to promote formula taht is for babies under 6 months. giving points would be seen as a reward and therefore and incentive.

TysonNobdie86 · 14/02/2011 12:54

I think its ok tbh, i ff both of mine, but those who bf dont get clubcard points for doing it so why should those who ff :)

DirtyMartini · 14/02/2011 12:56

It's the law, isn't it? So hardly a case of the supermarkets "saying" anything.

Advertising of infant fomula is not allowed for the same reasons. It's not to say formula feeding is unethical. It's to prevent advertisers promoting it as equivalent to or superior to bm, which would be untrue and unethical.

OTheHugeManatee · 14/02/2011 12:56

There are all kinds of restrictions on companies marketing formula milk. I imagine that giving clubcard points falls under that remit.

If you did get clubcard points for formula milk, some other MNer would be posting about how shocking that is. After all, you don't get clubcard points for using your norks, so this just makes it even, right?

pooka · 14/02/2011 12:57

Also wrt price reductions of 3 for 2 promotions, it is important that the price of milk is stable - in order that hooking through deal/followed by price rise doesn't happen. It is pretty hard and not in a baby's best interest to chop and change formula brands.

mistressploppy · 14/02/2011 12:57

Oh, good point Tyson

mistressploppy · 14/02/2011 12:57

And Manatee

MrSpoc · 14/02/2011 12:59

Some people cannot BF or choose not to for what ever reason.

Formula has been proven to be a good altrnitive to BF and is aloud to be used and sold. So why penilise people in this situation.

The also do not give you points if you buy Alcohol, Lottery tickets and cigs for the same reason.

OP posts:
wigglesrock · 14/02/2011 12:59

Ps what's worse is that you can't use your Tesco club vouchers for buying formula.

pooka · 14/02/2011 13:01

YOu're not being penalised! You just don't get the special offers/incentives that are above the norm.

Eglu · 14/02/2011 13:01

You are not being penalised. They are not taking anything away from you. They are just not giving you an incentive.

Have you read what other posters have written. If I choose to bf I don't get clubcard points. I can't scan my norks across the till.

OTheHugeManatee · 14/02/2011 13:01

I'm now having visions of BFing mothers beeping their norks out at the Tesco checkout and then getting extra clubcard points.

Grin
OhForBoonessSake · 14/02/2011 13:02

"Some people cannot BF or choose not to for what ever reason."

so they should get points for this as compensation is that what you are saying?

"So why penilise people in this situation."

it's not a penalty. points are a bonus not a right. you dont get tesco clubcard points if you buy formula in costcutter.

OTheHugeManatee · 14/02/2011 13:02

Does 'penilise' mean 'to make more penis-like'?
