To think the Mormons aren't that bad?

I live in the same area as a Mormon church, a pretty big one and have been avoiding them since I moved here after hearing horror stories of them never leaving you alone.

Well, I ended up being asked if they could come for a chat, I didn't want to be rude so said they could, they came today.

They were here ages, we chatted about all sorts, they were polite and interesting and weren't pushy at all. I explained I have no interest in joining any religion, not just theirs, and that I am an atheist and they seemed fine with this, saying they are just happy to have people listen to them.

I thanked them for telling me about their religion, that I felt I knew more about them now but that there was no need to come again. So the big question is, are they going to come back?

I told my DH and he thinks they will camp out on the doorstep or something!! I thought I was just being polite and they weren't aggressively recruiting or anything. AIBU to think they were just happy to have someone listen or am I just a naive fool??

We live two doors down from a family who follow the LDS faith. They are, without doubt the loveliest, kindest, funniest, most entertaining set of neighbours we have ever had. They're a joy to be with. We are born again Christians and therefore don't believe a vast amount of what they do. But they have opened our eyes as to what "people from other faiths" might be like.

They are happy to listen. Interested to hear about your beliefs. Happy to share theirs. Just like we are. And I suspect (just like we do) they firmly believe that they have found the path to eternal life which you haven't. So there's a good chance that (like us) they'd love you to look into what they believe and discover it to be the truth.

So, they will probably be back. Just like I would go back to chat to someone who told me that they were interested in hearing what I believe. Because I think that God gets people's attention in all sorts of different ways. If you're absolutely not interested, tell them so. If you are, ask God to show himself to you in whichever way he chooses.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 11/02/2011 23:50

OP is an atheist. That means that, to her, asking God to show her anything would be a farce.

redpanda13 · 12/02/2011 00:47

I am also an atheist. I have seen some lovely Mormon boys in my time. None of them have ever come near my door. I wonder why??
They always look so clean cut and wholesome. Just right for corruption. I must look right shifty so they stay away Sad

Well I will out myself here, I am a former mormon.

There are many sides to mormonism, so I would say use google to find out as much as you can if you have any interest at all in the mormon church.

Or you can message me and I'll point you in the direction of some places to look.

Bearskinwoolies · 12/02/2011 04:01

Loopy have you been to RfM yet? I understand totally where you are coming from.
It's a shame they don't see the irony in the 11th article of faith.

Naw, keep going, you're doing fine!
I would definitely add quite a few fringe religions to that list Grin

Bear

Can I ask why you are a former Mormon? I don't really know anything about them so would be interested to hear why you are no longer one

ThePosieParker · 12/02/2011 07:48

Mormons believe in polygamy and so is a pretty hideous religion and as for JW's any tolerance I had for them evaporated when a guy at my door said 'evil people like rapists, paedophiles and homosexuals'.....

What a vile, disablist term....no place for that on MN.

twolittlemonkeys · 12/02/2011 08:12

They do not practice polygamy Posie. It was briefly practised by some members (largely I believe, due to lots of men dying and their wives and children needing to be looked after) but has not been practised in the Mormon church for over 120 years. Anyone practising polygamy now has nothing to do with the Mormon church.

Do you want to tell us all what window licking means?

It's not my sensibilities that need checking, it's your moral compass.

All the Mormons guys that wander up and down the high street near me are beautiful. I always speak to them, and have even given them my mobile number, but I think the look of deranged lust in my eyes puts them off.

StarlightPrincess · 12/02/2011 08:51

Hmm. Are the Mormons still racist? I'm genuinely curious to know actually, if any one can tell me.

PigValentine · 12/02/2011 08:52

Oh and I think we all know window licker is not synonymous with "simplicity"

PigValentine · 12/02/2011 08:55

THey are no longer "officially" racist - they revised their beliefs in the 70's. I think they are still homophobic, but a lot of Mormons think that this will change in the same way the racism did.

StarlightPrincess · 12/02/2011 08:57

Ahhh right, thanks for clearing that up!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 12/02/2011 09:04

I used to pity the Mormons that were sent to missionarise Thailand. I used to see them every day riding around on their bikes. They had more chance of converting the Thais from Buddhism as getting any Muslim converts from KSA.
DD used to go to school with a delightful little boy, his parents were LDS from Utah. I don't think I've ever met a more kind and generous family. Really delightful.

duchesse · 12/02/2011 09:07

One of my best friends from university was and is a Mormon. His parents moved from the UK to the US to find a bigger faith group. Have rarely met a brighter, more questioning and more liberal mind than my friend. He's like a one-man anti-fascist movement. I don't know if he is the norm, or even if there is a norm of beliefs among the Mormons.
