To not want to eat off plates licked by a dog?

I know a couple of people who let their dog lick the plates when they have finished eating - before they go in the dishwasher/washing up.

AIBU to find this really gross? Am I a clean freak?

DH thinks I am. MIL always does this and he gets upset that I now avoid having meals at her house. All meals there end with a few plates beings slung on the floor to be 'prewashed' by her beloved pets.

as long as they are washed they are clean but still it's not nice - i am on the fence!

seeker · 11/02/2011 17:52

If they are washed I can't see the problem - although I wouldn't do it because I don't think animals should eat off human plates - bad "pack psychology"

Laska · 11/02/2011 17:53

If they're going in the dishwasher afterwards then YABU. If they're being washed up by hand then I'd want to be sure they were being washed very thoroughly in VERY hot water.

AliceWorld · 11/02/2011 17:56

How about cats? My cat licks mine clean before we wash them if it's something she fancies.

MrsSnow · 11/02/2011 17:59

My MIL does this and I have to say I find it disgusting, the only difference is that she does not have a dishwasher.

No, YANBU

wildfig · 11/02/2011 17:59

If they're going through a dishwasher cycle then they should probably be OK, but I wouldn't let my dog do it. What starts off as a quick lick before washing would escalate into her shoving me aside at the dinner table and demanding a napkin in about three days.

ShirtyGerty · 11/02/2011 18:00

Same for cats I'm afraid - although I would always happily treat a pet to a little bit of my food if it was something they loved.

I just feel a bit sick when look at the dog chewing its bone and licking its bum and then have to share its crockery.

I t5hink dishwashers actually sterilise stuff so from a health view you're ok. It's a bit gross, but thsat's a ll in the mind!

As wildfig says, its ended up with the dog regularly jumping up on people/the table if it doesn't get a plate quickly enough.

Do you eat with a fork that someone else has licked?

Ho about eating in a restaurant or drinking a coffee in Starbucks? Lord knows what people have used the items before you.

slightlymad72 · 11/02/2011 18:06

YUCK YUCK YUCK, even if they have been in the dishwasher. My dogs eat from their bowls and no where else and the cats are told off if they go on the kitchen sides or table.

Our dog 'helps' load the dishwasher by licking the excess food off the cutlery and plates as they are loaded in. Dishwashers do sterilise I think as I've read you can put baby bottles in.

Do not like cats on worktops though!

ShirtyGerty · 11/02/2011 18:08

Yes I eat with forks licked by other poeple - many other people. At my house, other people's houses, at work, restaurants etc. Its just the dog thing that bothers me.

Maybe I should offer the MIL a dog bowl to eat out of next time she comes here? Too confrontational?

my dog has finished leftovers but we always use the dishwasher afterwards Blush didnt think owt of it.

It hasnt made dog jump up she just looks quietly hopeful when we are finishing a meal.

Cat has to go on Utility room worktop to eat (or dog would eat his food) but I dont prepare food in there and I clean it daily. No litter tray, he lives mostly outdoors.

MIL's cats also have to eat all over the house so that the dog doesn't get their food. Dining room table and the side of the bath are just two of their dining areas. Showering with the smell of Whiskas...

Ah we only have dry food in this house. Occasionally they get a bit of leftover roast chicken. Dog always has milk left over in cereal bowls.

sheeplikessleep · 11/02/2011 18:14

yuk, dishwasher or not

ShirtyGerty · 11/02/2011 18:14

We had a ceramic hob next to a window that one of our cats used to love to sleep on as it got lovely and warm on summy days. We ended up having to leave obstacles on it to keep him off it as I was terrified of him burning his little paws after we had been cooking.
