To not want to eat off plates licked by a dog?

ShirtyGerty · 11/02/2011 17:49

I know a couple of people who let their dog lick the plates when they have finished eating - before they go in the dishwasher/washing up.

AIBU to find this really gross? Am I a clean freak?

DH thinks I am. MIL always does this and he gets upset that I now avoid having meals at her house. All meals there end with a few plates beings slung on the floor to be 'prewashed' by her beloved pets.

I'll wager that my dog's mouth has less germs in it than are on my toddlers fingers. Can't say it bothers me greatly as long as the plates go in the dishwasher afterwards.

PrivetDancer · 11/02/2011 20:43

It sounds horrible to me. If our dogs manage to lick one of our plates I like to give it a quick wash before it goes in the dishwasher! And I'm not generally anal about cleanliness.

What I find worse though is my friend putting cat bowls in the dishwasher, still with bits of cat food on them, in with their plates and cups etc! All the glasses smell faintly of cat food

PrivetDancer · 11/02/2011 20:44

Hmm, being anal about cleanliness doesn't quite sound right, does it?!

muminthemiddle · 11/02/2011 20:45

Op I am with you on this. My inlaws allowed their dog to do the same and it stopped me from eating there again I can tell you.

It is disgusting. There again I rinse all the cutlery/plates/cups I use at work in boiling water before I use them so I guess you could say that my levels of hygiene are quite high. Plus I never eat anything without first washing my hands.

mamatomany · 11/02/2011 20:46

I would love to know how to stop the cats doing this, you literally turn your back or get up to get a drink and they are in like lightening and your filet steak is being dragged back to base camp by a moggy, drives me fucking nuts.
Am glad the dishwasher sterilizers though, I told myself it was true nice to have it confirmed.

Beamur · 11/02/2011 20:46

I put my dogs bowl in the dishwasher - is that gross?

Morloth · 11/02/2011 20:48

Yuck, I wouldn't be eating there.

PrivetDancer · 11/02/2011 20:49

Yes beamur, it is!

Buda · 11/02/2011 20:51

Gross! Yuck and double yuck.

We have 2 dogs and although they get some leftovers
I put them in their bowls. And their bills are not allowed in the dishwasher either. Only get washed in utility room sink too not kitchen sink.

When I wash the dogs' bedding in the washing machine I then do a 90 degree wash to clean the machine too!

Could not eat off plates that I knew had been washed in a dishwasher with either dog or cat bowls.

Stayed with friends once and only realized they did that the morning after dinner there when I was unloading the dishwasher. I had to run and be sick.

Beamur · 11/02/2011 20:54

Ok, I don't want to make my guests want to vomit, so in future I will wash the dogs bowls by hand and not in the dishwasher.
My standards have slipped - when DD was a baby I threw away a plate that the dog had sneaked a lick of when my back was turned...

MillyR · 11/02/2011 21:00

I thought that dog's saliva has less bacteria in it than human bacteria. The chances of getting an infection if you are bitten by a human are higher aren't they?

That said, I am still repulsed when Dh lets the dogs eat from a fork.

DH also lets one of the dogs spending a long time licking between the toes of his non-working foot, and that is even more repulsive. But our neighbour told me she knew a woman that put chopped up pieces of mars bar between her toes to encourage the dog to lick her feet.

oldraver · 11/02/2011 21:07

I have loo brushes .... I just hate to see dogs and cats lick plates

My BIL used to offer his dog a bite of his sandwich then continue eating it. I nearly threw up. I'm quite the slattern but cant stand animal stuff touching my stuff. I do confess in the past I used disposable plates for the cats. I do now have plastic ones

Shallishanti · 11/02/2011 21:13

gross gross
if your dishwasher is sterilising stuff it's too hot and you are wasting energy! I don't think we really need sterile plates etc, just clean ones, but a dish that a dog had used has no place in the same water as human's dishes

but, since we're on the topic- the other day we walked a vv excited dog at the animal rescue place, and she leapt up at my face while my mouth was open, resulting in her saliva getting in my mouth ShockShock

I didn't know what to do! Same thing happened to ds2....we tried not to swallow and washed our mouths out with water, then went home and used mouthwash....we don't seem to have suffered, are we lucky? or was I being precious?

Blacksand · 11/02/2011 21:13

I would rather pick up dog poo or sick than human poo or sick, I would rather use a plate licked by a dog than a strange human and i would rather walk through a field where dogs have shit than go into most human public loos.

I think human poo, sick, sweat smells etc. are far worse than anything you smell in a zoo.

Changing room armpits anyone .....

Hatesponge · 11/02/2011 21:14

YANBU. It's just icky.

I can't bear animals licking/eating stuff off plates. I once spent a v trying weekend at a house (and barely ate for 2 days) where the family allowed their dogs and cats to eat freely from everyone's plates, or forks/spoons.

I fully expect they licked the plates as well.

Frankly seeing the cats walking all over worktops whilst food was being prepared was bad enough.

GabySolis · 11/02/2011 21:21

No YANBU, you're hardly being a clean freak just from pointing out the obvious - letting the dog lick your plate clean is fucking minging! MIL and husband used to let their dogs do that and I also thought it was absolutely gross!

alemci · 11/02/2011 21:27

I cannot bear it either. Once had a boyfriend whose mother let the cat and dog eat off plates after someone had finished.

also put meat on newspaper on the worktop for the cat. can't cats on worktops either.

My DH grandmother did the same with plates for the cat as well. so gross
