Family make-ups are changing. Why is it the family prize in competitions is always for a family of four - what about the many, many families of five plus? It's discrimination that we can't enter!

And entry to theme parks, attractions, pools, soft play etc - the family tickets are nearly always for a family of four. Again, many families are bigger than that. It's starting to get on my nerves!

Lots of places now offer 2+3 or 1+2/1+3.

It is the same for small families - we can never buy a family ticket as our family is two adults and one child. So no discounts coming our way - at least you can buy a family ticket and top up.

Sidge · 17/02/2011 15:11

Holidays are a rip off as well. We're off abroad in May and not only do we have to pay adult price for DD1 as she's 12 (since when has a 12 year old been considered remotely adult except in HolidayLand?) we also have to pay adult price for DD2 who is only 7.

When I queried it I was told that because we need 2 rooms there has to be 2 adults booked in each room Angry. I told them that was discriminatory and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Sounds like what happened to you Mavis - it is shitty and so thoughtless.

"It's discrimination"

No it's not. It's just the way in which a private company has decided to advertise and promote a grouping of tickets as a discount

Or single children.
Plucky little single children trying to make their way in the world who can't because of the discriminatory tickets.
Give single children footballers wages!!!!

pointydog · 17/02/2011 17:00

I've noticed that a lot of family tickets are two adults and up to 3 children.

They h ave to use some sort of benchmark for their pricing structures.

I'd've thought one adult and one child going on holiday would be easy in hotels, s-c and statics since it just requires a twin room. No?

But there's a flat rate for a twin room and a flat rate for a one-bedroom caravan and one-bed cottage.

I see that family rooms in hotels would be cheaper, yes I see that now. But other acommodation will be cheaper, no?

Rhian82 · 17/02/2011 17:34

I remember going to the Eden Project with DH and DS, plus DH's dad and stepmum. They were convinced we'd be able to buy a family ticket to get us all in, despite the fact that we were four adults and one child!

Unsurprisingly, it didn't work out like that.

I was refused a booking at a caravan park because they don't take bookings from single sex groups. I thought it was just to prevent hen and stag parties not to prevent a single mum of a young dd going on holiday. I was very annoyed at the time but its a moot point now as I can no longer afford a holiday.

Ismene · 17/02/2011 19:03

Was that aimed at my comment MayorQuimby? I didn't say we were being discriminated against, just that the OP could still take advantage of a discount with a larger family whereas there are other family sizes that can't. That is just a fact.

hissymissy · 17/02/2011 19:06

I get a bit frustrated that single parent families are always excluded from discounts.

pointydog · 17/02/2011 21:00

ah right. I've never done an overseas hotel/s-c hol with kids.

Try being a newly single parent family. After dp died i took my 2 on holiday and they charged the eldest adult price.

Sorry to hear that Mavis - I found that too. Hopeless getting a sensibly priced holiday if you're a SP with kids. Don't want to lay it on, but we're usually the ones who need the discount the most Sad

Room, tickets into tourist attractions. Is everyone talking about accommodation here? I was thinking of tourist attractions and local festivals.
