to think the bloody tooth fairy should do her job...

Okay - so I am wracked with guilt.

Dd lost her first tooth yesterday while at school. She came home with it carefully wrapped up in an envelope and we found a box to put it in and left it under her pillow.

She awoke this morning, checked the box and the tooth was still there! Yes ok so I forgot. I remember thinking about it, but then ds1 (aged 12!) decided he wanted a cuddle in bed and I fell asleep with him - woke up feeling awful and went straight to bed. Forgot all about the bloody tooth! The worst thing was that dd checked the box this morning and never said a word. She obviously felt guilty that her tooth wasn't good enough or something.

When I eventually remembered, I fobbed dd off with the excuse that the tooth fairy was very busy and must have run out of time.

Feel like the worst mum in the world. (The tooth fairy has never forgotten the boys' teeth.)

I have done this the last 3 times to my ds Blush my excuse was he must of moved when she came to get the tooth. You see the tooth fairy will get squashed if he's moving.

I have sometimes quickly swapped it after he has got up and said the TF must of quickly flew in when you were downstairs lol

MCos · 04/02/2011 17:52

I've done this last 2 times to my youngest DD. First time I found her sitting downstairs early in the morning, with silent tears running down her face, because the tooth fairy forgot her. Did I feel bad, or what! I managed to tuck the money between mattress and headboard, and then we 'found' it together. After that drama, I can't believe I forgot again on the next tooth!!

MusieB · 04/02/2011 17:53

Yup, I've done that too - several times. Perhaps the tooth fairy might leave a little treat or sweet as well as the money by way of apology for the late arrival of the money? Seems to entirely make up for it in the DC's mind.

My DD (then 7) entered into correspondence with the tooth fairy. The tooth fairy was doing unusually well and remembered to take the tooth and leave the coin on the first night. Next morning, the coin was still in box with a note saying:
"Dear Tooth Fairy. Instead of money I would like a pet mouse. Love from DD"
I found a Flower Fairies gift tag and wrote a reply in very tiny writing:
""Dear DD, Sorry but I only do money not animals, Love the Tooth Fairy"
Next morning the money was still there along with a new note:
"Dear Tooth Fairy. Can you ask your friend the animal fairy instead? I would really like a mouse. Love from DD"
I'm sorry to say she didn't get the mouse....

MusieB thats really sweet.

LadyOfTheManor · 04/02/2011 19:01

The tooth fairy ripped me off once.

Giving me a massive Victorian penny because my parents whispered oh-so-quietly that they didn't have any change.

Hmm
LadyOfTheManor · 04/02/2011 19:01

Musie that's cute! Bless him!

On forth am in Edinburgh they got a phone call about a mum forgetting so they got a news flash put over that due to high winds all deliveries from the tooth fairy where cancelled last night.

fifi25 · 04/02/2011 20:27

Ive done this 3 times between 2 kids, lost 2 and forgot to put money under once.

The last time i had lost the tooth again so had to tell her that grandma had it as the tooth fairy who goes to her house is rich.

She wasnt very impressed when she came back with half what i normally give her.

Ormirian · 04/02/2011 20:29

Don't worry. The tooth fairy is a very busy elemental. There are backlogs you know!

DD had to wait 3 days Hmm OK she is 11....

theoldtrout01876 · 05/02/2011 00:17

I suspect the tooth fairy would not leave a sweet to apologise for her late arrival

Khara · 05/02/2011 11:53

Good to know we're not the only family with an incompetent tooth fairy!
Luckily she did make it last night - despite a couple of glasses of wine - and dd is all smiles again.

our tooth fairy is very flaky.

gapbear · 05/02/2011 12:23

One of the girls in my class asked me what our tooth fairy was called, because hers is called Tilly. I said I'd ask next time she was around. Shall have to think of a suitably fairy-esque name...

supersewer · 05/02/2011 13:55

in my friends house the toothfairy leaves the money in their mums purse and the kids help themselves!!!

there is more to being a mum than being the toothfairy

My dd wants tobe a toothfairy when she grows up - hopefully she will do better than us!

fifi25 · 05/02/2011 14:06

Good idea supersewer - Thats my new one for the 2.5 yr old. I can imagine her sisters saying you always got your money off the tooth fairy WE DIDNT Shock

MotherOfSuburbia · 05/02/2011 14:33

I forgot 3 nights on the trot once and then twisted my ankle falling off the bunk bed when tooth was finally being collected. I think the tooth fairy has become pretty inefficient these days... Smile

Tanith · 05/02/2011 14:39

I forgot my DS once. We'd just got back from holiday, however, and I spent half an hour telling him a thrilling tale of how the Tooth Fairy had battled the elements, hungry sharks and pirates to get to the place we'd stayed on holiday, only to find that he'd gone home. I told him she was so exhausted and it was so late (fairies disappear at dawn, of course) that she had to make her visit the next night.

He entirely understood and felt very sorry for her.

duchesse · 05/02/2011 14:43

Our family tooth fairy is a lazy cow must be in her dotage as she sometimes forgets until several teeth have been amassed and reminders sent. (in the sweetest possible terms, but still nevertheless overdue payment notices)

duchesse · 05/02/2011 14:45

I must quickly add that my older children are all teenagers losing their last molars. I was a bit better when they were little. Not much better, but a bit.

Northernlurker · 05/02/2011 14:59

THis has happened a few times in our house. The dcs are very accepting of the busy working mother tooth fairy - especially as she obviously assuages her guilt by paying double the next night!

Tooth fairy was notorious in our house for being a bit slack, especially at weekends when she may well have been distracted by a glass of wine. You could make a joke of this with your DD and tell her that the fairy is not as well organised as say, Santa, who always seems to manage to get the job done despite massive seasonal pressures!
