20k would make life much nicer.

a nice car.

a nice holiday

pay some bills

a couple in the bank for a rainy day.

It doesn't seem a huge amount, or excessively greedy.

AIBU? or greedy?

By the way xenia i was working until midnight and again before 7 today.

Lots of us do it

AtYourCervix · 04/02/2011 08:49

The 20k i want isn't for essentials. i have those. it's for frivolities. my current car does work but the heater doesn't.

i want need <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.algysautos.com/images/nissan-figaro.jpg&imgrefurl=www.algysautos.com/Sports_Cars.html&usg=__nkI23SOOwMFgqHzZiXEOsr_0t54=&h=263&w=350&sz=29&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=-_2RBemr9Gt2OM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=180&ei=qLxLTfWDDY6whQfY8_G1Dg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dnissan%2Bfigaro%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1T4DSGK_enGB393GB394%26biw%3D1345%26bih%3D555%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=511&vpy=215&dur=1857&hovh=195&hovw=259&tx=131&ty=129&oei=qLxLTfWDDY6whQfY8_G1Dg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">one like this

I do know that plenty of people work hard, get up at 5am to get a 2 hour series of buses into London to work because the tube is too expensive, clean, leave do other jobs.

Having money spare for frivolities or to save tends to make most people feel secure and not having it and always getting more and more behind makes them not.

So I think it can be sensible to think every day about possibilities for earning more money and it's much much more fun than - how can I cut back by buying value not finest bread etc.

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2011 09:06

If somehad given me £50k we could have bought this house (lovely rented house, owner needs to sell). Too late now though.

TrillianAstra · 04/02/2011 09:09

Oh, we've moved on from 'give me money universe' to talking about working very very very hard.

I just don't want to do anything at all between 5am and 7am on a Saturday. Or any day in fact. I'll survive without it.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 04/02/2011 09:12

I knew a woman who cleaned in a west end theatre where I was performing...she had about 6 cleaning jobs in the west end and used to RUN whilst she cleaned, to get it done faster....then she'd run to the next theatre and so on. Then at Midday she'd get a bus to camden where she waited on in a restaurant. She'd eat when she got there, then after doing the lunch shift there, she would go back to hackney and work in a call centre selling something or other.

Her husband worked similarly hard..they bought a house in London...a really nice one...something I haven't managed on a not bad wage!

I imagine if one works madly and spends nothing for a while then it wouldnt be that hard.

I can still see her running up the massive staircase in the theatre wiping the bannisters as she went. She taught me how to mop really well. Grin

Xenia · 04/02/2011 09:47

And the funny thing is that exercise and enjoying your work makes yo uhappy and sitting around eating cream buns affects the bits of the brain which make you sad. Plus the energetic cleaning jobs keep you slim too.

People differ and many women on the planet get their money through marrying even now and don't earn their own. So enhancing your marriage prospects might be he best investment for some.

RMCW · 04/02/2011 10:23

xenia May I pick your brains??

I am currently a SAHM of 2 small children.

I have a chronic health condition which makes it difficult to commit to regular days/hours of work and I will not apply for jobs when I know I may let my employer down..I think its unethical to do so.

I do some voluntary work...with the scouts and Red Cross but most days I have some free time.

Anyway, I am educated to A level standard and wondered what work I could do from home?
I would happily use my laptop/phone.

Any ideas?

AtYourCervix · 04/02/2011 11:12

i love my job but the pay's a bit crap. and DH might object to me marrying someone else even if he is rich.

i shall write my memoirs.

I was away earning a crust....

RMCW: so something selling on line might be possible. I know a lot of clever people who get good at google otimisation and have done well.

Or writing - go to peopleperhour.com - I use that site. You can bid for work.

And there will always be sales opportunities. I've worked with lots of commercial agents - they market essentially and you can do that from home. They are only paid commission. Some earn over £200k a year although those are usually out and about quite a lot.

Or build up expertise in something more than anyone else has so that buying it from you might be very valuable whether that's gold deposits around the world or whatever (but try to pick something which could be sold to big companies with money, not to impoverished neighbours on benefits - look at the people who built up the Tesco clubcard database. They did pretty well. look at the money supposedly made from mailing list sales by Prince William's girl friend's family.

Alouiseg · 04/02/2011 14:55

Waits while Peopleperhour.com crashes. :o

Xenia · 04/02/2011 15:42

I should be on commission for them... lost opportunity there.

Alouiseg · 04/02/2011 15:57

Hehe, I cant imagine you've missed too many opportunities.

welshbyrd · 04/02/2011 16:22

Id love £30, so I can get myself a takeaway curry to watch the rugby tonight, times are hard though, shit aint it Sad

Laquitar · 04/02/2011 16:23

Xenia, don't you need a good capital to self-publish? How does it work? (i've got an idea for bi-lingual childrens books)

TheVisitor · 04/02/2011 16:26

I'd quite like £300,000 so I can buy outright a house that's big enough for me and my brood. Grin

Alouiseg · 04/02/2011 17:13

Laquitar You probably know about Lulu.com, but just in case you don't...

expatinscotland · 04/02/2011 17:29

Aw, fuck it. I want to be the sole winner of the rollover Lotto jackpot tomorrow.

Laquitar · 04/02/2011 17:37

Many thanks Alouiseq, when i posted earlier i was trying to remember the name of this site! I came back and found your post! (maybe you can make extra cash reading people's minds? Wink Grin)
