This is sick and brings more shame on the Canadian nation.

It is a shame she isn't Sarah stupie.

Mists · 03/02/2011 20:15

Just because, here's a link to that thread where SGM says, "I AM CANADIAN!" after the pp says "Have you ever been to Canada?" Grin

Baroque, very good points. We as a nation are shameful to have the RSPCA as the flagship animal welfare organisation IMO. Likewise we are shameful for the culling of pound dogs which is carried out by law and with council taxpayers money. The Irish are shameful for their antiquated animal welfare laws which haven't been revised in over a century and their treatment of dogs, Greyhounds in particular... no nation is innocent.

This event, where someone has killed in such a barbaric manner and been paid because it upset him with Canadian law supporting that decision, makes Canada shameful too. Our own failings don't make Canada's any less disgraceful.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 20:20

The Palin one is fantastic - and I have just PMSLing at the "I AM CANADAIAN" posts on the thread Mists linked to Grin

oh Christ Valahala - we should all walk round with a "I AM GUILTY" sign on should we if we are a nation as guilty for the animal cruelty, I guess that also applies to the poverty, crime, etc etc etc.

We should never smile, or show our face to anyone from another country again Hmm

Mists · 03/02/2011 20:27

Thanks, I just wish I knew how to link the later parts of a thread rather than having people scrolling for ages going, "Stair-gates? WTF, where are the Canadian bits?"

MNer since 2007 and I still don't know Blush

Vallhala · 03/02/2011 20:33

"...Valahala - we should all walk round with a "I AM GUILTY" sign on should we if we are a nation as guilty for the animal cruelty... We should never smile, or show our face to anyone from another country again"

And where did I intimate that, Baroque?

Ryoko · 03/02/2011 20:34

Well I'm sure loads of toff went out and shot there stinking hounds with boomsticks after the hunting ban.

staffylover · 03/02/2011 20:37

ryoko proof please

OP posts:
Vallhala · 03/02/2011 20:37

We haven't found that to be an issue, despite their threats to do so when the ban was mooted and first introduced, Ryoko.

They have carried on as normal, some converting to drag hunting, some breaking the law by to hunt fox etc and dig out.

Vallhala · 03/02/2011 20:38

"by to"?? Tsk.

TeddyBare · 03/02/2011 20:40

Vallhala - The person who was paid compensation for ptss was an employee who witnessed it, but the article I read implied that he had not actually been responsible for killing any of the dogs. The other article is not in English and I don't have time to translate the whole thing atm, sorry, but it offered a slightly less inflammatory version than we have been linked to here.

staffylover · 03/02/2011 20:42

The case came to light on Monday after the worker claimed post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of killing the dogs and was reportedly awarded compensation.

OP posts:
Vallhala · 03/02/2011 20:44

Apologies TeddyBare - the info I read earlier this afternoon was that the killer had been compensated.

Regardless, it's appalling that the matter only came to light (if what I read about this is accurate) when that person applied for compensation. It should have been reported immediately. Personally I couldn't have stood there and witnessed it, even if it meant me getting hurt or killed - I'd have had a bloody good go at taking the gun or knife off the killer and turning it on them.

Takver · 03/02/2011 20:50

I have to say I thought this thread was going to be about the Tar Sands, which, IMO does bring shame on the Canadian government.

(I wouldn't say it brings shame on Canada as a whole, though, AFAIK lots of Canadians are campaigning against the exploitation very actively.)

"Canadian police have launched an investigation after details of the killings emerged in documents relating to compensation paid to an employee who was ordered to cull the pack." - BBC News.

BBC news confirms that it was the employee who killed the dogs who also claimed the compensation.

Of course, I don't know if it's accurate, I wasn't there, but this is what we are being told and is the information I am reacting to.

staffylover · 03/02/2011 21:11

OAW called the incident tragic and regrettable, and said a new policy has been put in place to ensure all dogs are euthanized at a veterinarian's office.

Tragic? Regretable? Why can`t they rehome the dogs?
