Why do you all have to call your family dear/darling? It makes you all sound bonkers and if you have to keep telling everyone they are dear or darling it implies there is some doubt?

OP posts:
scaryteacher · 03/02/2011 10:40

Why don't you get off Mumsnet and go and do something else instead? If it ain't broke, don't fix it....the abbreviations work for us, if they don't for you go elsewhere.

boyscomingoutofmyears · 03/02/2011 10:40

I must admit, I found the whole "dear/darling" thing a bit cringeworthy when I first arrived here on planet MN, BUT after about 5 minutes I realised it's so much bloody easier to type and I don't actually read it as dear or darling anymore. In fact if I see the word son written down I read it as DS. I even call them DS1, 2 and 3 sometimes to ther people in RL.

Niecie · 03/02/2011 10:40

OP you clearly have too much time on your hands to be thinking about it so much and it is actually you, DOP, who is bonkers.

I reckon 99% don't give it a moments thought. We all know what we mean, which is the important thing and one person deciding it is bonkers doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

Having said that, I am clearly heading towards bonkersdom too, for bothering to remark on the fact that you care. ConfusedGrin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 10:45

TaintedRose "You are being unreasonable" - not YABU lol

ahhh - yes one thing I do agree with is that we're all bonkers Grin

  • well the rest of them are - I'm perfectly sane Wink
nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 10:46

i never ever think of it as meaning dear or darling - the only time i've ever done that is when I was explaining to DH about the letters - I said "it means dear husband or darling husband, but i say dear because darling is [boak] but it's just DH because it's quicker"
DH likes being DH irl, too. Grin

so nur

It's called short-hand.
just like you use & instead of and and @ instead of at and . instead of dot and www instead of worldwideweb and mrs instead of mistress and mr instead of mister....

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 10:46

or other clichétastic quips
dont let door hit arse as you leave
are you newbie
i'll get popcorn

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 10:47

DOP is Darling Opening Poster! Grin

EricNorthmansMistress · 03/02/2011 10:49

It's just shorthand. OH is much worse - other half? Feck off. Worst of all is people who use OH and LO and don't capitalise them. My oh took the lo to the park...very hard to read. Twats

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 10:50

PMSL Nickel Grin

(or should that be pissing myself laughing Confused)

Actually I think we ought to stop using "MN" to refer to mumsnet \link{http://www.acronymfinder.com/MN.html\lookat all those verified definitions of the acronym MN} and mumsnet isn't there Shock

We are going to confuse people Shock! They may think we're talking about MuggleNet Grin

mommmmyof2 · 03/02/2011 10:50

OP I think you may been thinking about it more than the rest of us who use the dd,ds and dh shortcuts Hmm

But aside from that I do think I am bonkers but that is due to my dc Grin

TrinityMotherOfRhinos · 03/02/2011 10:54

op is a silly twit to think we all hear DEAR daughter in our heads when speaking or typing it

ffs DD just means Daughter

and I am not slow

so piss off

mutznutz · 03/02/2011 10:56

I've only ever seen it on here and it drives me mad.

I think it's hilarious when people type 'DS' because they think it's quicker than adding one extra letter and making it 'son'

Also, some people will litter their posts with too many acronyms...claiming it saves time and then go on to type a mammoth post that could have been summed up in a tiny paragraph.

Nowt as queer as folk Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 10:58

you've only ever seen it on here - you obviously haven't \link{http://www.google.co.uk/search?aq=f&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=DD+DH+DS#hl=en&xhr=t&q=DH+DD+Ds&cp=6&pf=p&sclient=psy&safe=off&aq=0&aqi=&aql=&oq=DH+DD+&pbx=1&fp=fb940dbb4101f61\travelled far} on the the WWW then......

And "son1" just sounds odd - prefer DS1.

GwynAndBearIt · 03/02/2011 10:59

Welcome to MN, we are all bonkers here. Grin

frasersmummy · 03/02/2011 11:03

ahh cheers baroque .. I thought it was something husband .. couldnt figure it out at all

Sarsaparilllla · 03/02/2011 11:12

I agree with the OP, it annoys me too, I think some of the acromyms on here are a quite irritating and I've never come across them on other sites

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 11:13

i think "DH" in my mind when I type it.

I sometimes forget DH's RL name and call him DH.
(although I've already said he likes it)

I even make sure he's remembered the names of our unconceived children by quizzing him thus:
Me: "DD1?"
Him: "Eleanor Katherine"
Me: "DS1?"
Him: "James Graham"
Me: "DD2?"
etc etc etc.
sorry, should that be et cetera et cetera.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/02/2011 11:15

"I agree with the OP"

well if you find it annoying stop using acronyms then - you can't use some and then be irritated by others Shock - OP is an acronym.......

scottishmummy · 03/02/2011 11:18

lol, what a lot of ire.op has proper wound some of you up with very predictable responses
