To think my work is being out of order re: the royal wedding?

My local NHS trust, where I work, has just decreed that the day of the royal wedding is to be treated as a normal working day! Now, I'm no royalist but as far as I was aware it's meant to be a national holiday. Instead they're running everything as normal and those who usually work Fridays will be made to do so and won't be paid a penny more (they will get a day off in lieu apparently, although when they'll be able to take it I don't know).

AIBU to think this is really mean and just not in the spirit of things?

what do you expect - for the country to close down?

shumway · 02/02/2011 15:15

Same with my work. Not NHS though.

GloriaSmut · 02/02/2011 15:15

Well thank fuck for normality somewhere in this country on that particular day!

meantosay · 02/02/2011 15:16

YABU. As long as they're getting a day in lieu it seems perfectly fair to me. Would you be happy if all the shops were closed on 29th April??

IAmTheCookieMonster · 02/02/2011 15:16

Does the NHS shut down on normal bank holidays? I hope not!

LittleHarrysMum · 02/02/2011 15:16

You don't have to pay out for all the extra holidays like they do though. There are also 3 other bank holidays around that time which employers will have to fork out for.

I don't know why they couldn't get married on a Saturday or picked one of the bank holidays already there Grin

meantosay · 02/02/2011 15:17

ps I agree with Gloria. I would have thought we would have gained a bit of perspective on royal weddings after the Diana fiasco.

Why would NHS pay more for a BH working? There is no legal requirement to pay more but day in lieu is fine - maybe take it on a day thats would suit you better? Or are you on the guest list?

ChaoticAngelofAnarchy · 02/02/2011 15:19

YABU

What CookieMonster said.

stillbobbysgirl · 02/02/2011 15:19

book a day off from your holiday entitlement if you want that badly to watch a bunch of inbred ingrates looking down thier noses at us

meantosay · 02/02/2011 15:23

Or just read Hello. I'm sure they'll have it all in every embroidered, beaded, detail.

KittenSLittle · 02/02/2011 15:24

Of course I don't expect them to shut down, that's ridiculous! I'm a nurse and am well aware that a service is provided 24/7. I have no issue with working bank holidays, weekends etc and frequently do so. But I would expect them to honour the fact that it's been declared a national holiday and recompense those who have to work it, especially those who aren't usually required to come in on bank holidays.

I've banned this day. It's bad enough that I'll be paying for it, without dishing out a Bank Holiday as well.

I'm a Republican, I'm not a Royalist. I will likely be sued. I am going to devise my own religion to duck out of the whole pantomime.

YABU; getting a day of in lieu is more than reasonable.

TrillianAstra · 02/02/2011 15:29

You get an extra day off.

Why are you complaining?

If it's so important to you then schedule some of your regular holiday time to be on that day. You won't lose out because you have the extra day off to take at another time.

KittenSLittle · 02/02/2011 15:30

FWIW I really DON'T want to watch it, I wanted to work it so I could avoid the inevitable blanket coverage. I DID say in my OP that I'm not a royalist...And it is usual practice to get more for working a bank hol. Surely that's only fair? And won't it be more disruptive/costly for people to have an extra day's holiday?

I wonder will it generate the same excitement as Charles and Diana's wedding or has life just moved on.

GloriaSmut · 02/02/2011 15:31

You are a nurse?!! And you still can't see why the country can't shut down, wholesalem for a sodding Royal Wedding?

Also, how do you work out that you are owed some sort of recompense beyond time off in lieu? You will still get an additional, paid, day off even if it isn't on the 29th April.

flowery · 02/02/2011 15:31

Don't understand - they are recognising it and are giving a day off in lieu to those who have to work it. What's the problem?

GloriaSmut · 02/02/2011 15:32

Sorry, that should read "wholesale".

Choleric moment had fearful effect on the typing.
