To think my work is being out of order re: the royal wedding?

KittenSLittle · 02/02/2011 15:12

My local NHS trust, where I work, has just decreed that the day of the royal wedding is to be treated as a normal working day! Now, I'm no royalist but as far as I was aware it's meant to be a national holiday. Instead they're running everything as normal and those who usually work Fridays will be made to do so and won't be paid a penny more (they will get a day off in lieu apparently, although when they'll be able to take it I don't know).

AIBU to think this is really mean and just not in the spirit of things?

Melty - I knew it was bad - I had no idea it was that bad. It's one thing to work through breaks etc - not ideal, but common in a lot of jobs now - but to be consistently working 50-60 hrs for 37.5 hours pay - it's disgraceful :( Especially when you see how much is wasted in other areas :(

In this economy the public sector cannot afford additional bank holiday payments and the majority of private companies probably can't either. It's mad.

If it had just been left alone then the people who really want to see it could have just booked the day off - now it's all going to be a mess, people who really want to see it not being able to get the day off, people feeling pissed of that they aren't being paid for it when their friends/partners are.

Then I suppose if they hadn't declared it a 'national holiday' there would have been a huge uproar about that too ...sigh.

AnyFucker · 02/02/2011 22:59

chip...it is that bad Sad

elphabadefiesgravity · 02/02/2011 23:05

YABU. Where I work we have a holiday credits scehem. The employers pay into it each year and the scheme pays sick and holiday pay. The amounts are set in advance, the scheme pays out for a set amount of holidays including bank holidays per year. This isn't suddenly going to change.

The only people who will benefit are those who have contracts which state x days of holiday plus bank holidays rather than x days including bank holidays.

AtYourCervix · 02/02/2011 23:06

yup. it is that bad..... i assumed i'd get an extra bank holiday holiday plus extra pay if working that day. i'll be pissed off if i don't.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 02/02/2011 23:08

AF - I am used to working long hours, so 50-60 hours a week is quite the norm for me - but not for 37.5 hours pay :( That really is atrocious!

solo · 02/02/2011 23:10

That's exactly what happens on every BH when you work for the Prison Service. No extra pay for working them ~ not even Christmas Day!!! So what?

scottishmummy · 02/02/2011 23:14

whats your beef?day off in lieu is ok.services need to maintain some normality

AnyFucker · 02/02/2011 23:15

I am contracted to work 18.75 hours a week

it is way over that, week in and week out

I am supposed to be able to tot it up and take it back when times are quieter

it never happens

I am not a martyr, nor are my work patterns inefficient

there is some stuff you just cannot put down unfinished (direct patient care, as an example), and staffing levels are so skeleton, there is no-one to pick up the unfinished tasks

and so it goes on

elphabadefiesgravity · 02/02/2011 23:16

My children's school are going to be closed, but have cancelled the inset day that was due to be on the Tuesday so the kids go back a day early after Easter now.

AnyFucker · 02/02/2011 23:17

sorry, my last post was to chip, about a side issue, not directly about BH's

Melty · 02/02/2011 23:19

I worked for a year in the private sector, and the salary was better than the NHS, but you didnt get shift allowances or bank holiday pay as it was all inclusive. They sold it as "you always know what your monthly pay is going to be" and you did, there weren't any surprises.

Perhaps that is how the Prison Service works? I dont really know except there really would never be enough money to persuade me to do that thankless job.

The NHS really doesnt pay that well, especially for the lower band staff. (Newly qualified nurses and midwives are paid a band 5, and the Health Care Assistants are only paid band 1- band 3 in most cases.) The shift allowances sweeten it somewhat.

2rebecca · 02/02/2011 23:28

You seriously expect hospitals to become emergency only and surgeries to close because of a wedding OP? Completely off your trolley. Hope you aren't a doctor.

A1980 · 02/02/2011 23:29

YABVVU

Two spoiled brats getting married warrants the entire country shutting down to celebrate. Celebrate what?

lololizzy · 02/02/2011 23:42

my workplace the same and no day off in lieu at all..same as on Easter Sunday etc (and we are only a shop) i do like the normality though..

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 02/02/2011 23:43

AF/Melty - that really is terrible :( I don't think many people realise just how bad it is.

Solo - that's the same as most private companies. I guess the NHS offers a sweetner to make sure they have enough staff in on BH's.

reelingintheyears · 02/02/2011 23:50

So......who gives a monkey's shit about all the self employed.
The plumbers/Electricians..etc

And there are quite alot of them....

Who wants to pay them extra when they have an emergency on the 'Happy Day'.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 02/02/2011 23:59

reeling - Me. Other people who are self employed/have self employed partners, family, friends... certainly not the Govt.

However, the people I feel for the most (as a group not individually) are small business owners who either haven't got a locked down contract OR feel forced into paying their staff for this Govt declared 'National Holiday' so as not to appear to be a bad employer. Many small businesses have their backs pressed against the wall right not without paying 50 staff not to work for the day!

solo · 03/02/2011 00:04

The Prison Service are trying to get rid of us on £30k that have bundles of experience to employ others on £18k + prison service allowance and London Allowance which will add up to about around £22k (this is an approximation) at most and if in London. They've started to pay peanuts and they are going to get monkeys, not good staff. Even on that crap salary, they will only get a day off in lieu which is added to their annual leave for when they work Chistmas day, boxing day, nyd, easter etc. No real reward IMO. Police otoh, get triple pay for Christmas day and double for all the others. My friend raked it in.
Sorry for hijack, but you aren't in so bad a position OP. There are far worse jobs and conditions (and I don't mean this one above).

reelingintheyears · 03/02/2011 00:11

ChippingIn.....
bet you don't reallywant to pay extra if you have an emergency on the wedding day.

Emmanana · 03/02/2011 00:14

Sorry, YABU.
You are gaining something (an extra day off)
Plenty will be losing because of the wedding. Self employed, extra childcare costs because of school closure.
You're being given something and yet complaining you want more?
If your child was given a birthday present, and spent the day sulking because they wanted more, what would you do?
Please count what blessings you have, and be grateful that you will get a bonus extra day to spend with your kids, or stay at home and have a 'Me' day.
Why not get together on the day off with colleagues who also have to work, and spend the day in someones garden, having a barbie and drinking wine, and celebrating the fact you actually have jobs?
That may sound harsh, but there are lots of people who dream of working, let alone having a day (in lieu) paid, as a result of someone else getting married.
If you look for the downside in life, that's all you'll ever find.
Spend your day off indulgently and see it as a positive thing.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 03/02/2011 00:16

Solo - unfortunately it is happening in all sectors. There doesn't seem to be a single sector where this isn't happening!?! You have to wonder where it's going to stop.

It is made more difficult though when you see others being rewarded when you are not (ie police v prison on BH's).

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 03/02/2011 00:18

Reeling - I was saying 'Me' to your question about 'who gives a shit'.

No, of course I don't want to pay more to have work on the day of the wedding - but if I had an emergency I would accept that I may have to. However, if it was planned work I would let the contractor decide if they wanted to do it that day (for the same rate) or leave it until another day - then it's their choice whether they are working that day or not.

Half of the country wont be paid for the day.

reelingintheyears · 03/02/2011 00:20

Do the Prison service/police not get a day in lieu for the Royal Wedding?

reelingintheyears · 03/02/2011 00:26

Yeah, but the contractor isn't going to not work because that will cost him money.

He will still have to pay the people who work for him.

What choice do they have?

reelingintheyears · 03/02/2011 00:29

I don't think you don't give a shit Chipping.

I do think loads of people don't realise how many self employed people there are.
