that way nobody would have an excuse to leave piles of toxic, disgusting dog filth on public streets, beaches and parks

I also like the "dog DNA database" idea

Quite. And it ain't working.

I would btw - have got a dog if I had the motivation/energy to walk it every day come wind, rain or shine.........dragging the DS's behind me in the said weather.

Longstocking2 · 01/02/2011 14:51

HEAR HEAR Roland!
HEAR HEAR Grimma!

Beertricks your freedom to own a dog without enforceable responsibilities makes your dog and all the dogs in this country part of a very large national pandemic problem. The needs of the few are being effectively treated as more important than the needs of the many. I don't care how many good owners there are, they appear to me to be dwarfed by the volume of excrement I'm dealing with.

Tax them til the scuttlers give them up! WHOOOP!

GORGEOUSX · 01/02/2011 14:51

Thanks everyone - been pondering getting a dog - decision made!Grin

Longstocking2 · 01/02/2011 14:53

thank you thank you thank you thank you Gorgeous from the rest of the majority of citizens of this country who are not selfish enough to be dog owners!!!

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 14:54

Maybe for a week ALL dog owners should refuse to pick up their dog shit.......and then people would realise how much better the problem is now compared to what it used to be......

Yes in some areas there may be little difference, but I expect in those areas you have litter, and human vomit, and piss, and maybe even a few condoms and needles lying around in the hedges if you look close enough as well.

if you are thinking of getting a dog, you should be prepared to look into its eyes and say "I promise faithfully that I will personally pick up every single last turd that issues forth from your arse from this moment until the day you die - including when you are ill, or have the runs"

I don't believe most dog owners do make that level of commitment tbh. Even the ones who do it most of the time. There is just too much shit out there for it to be a rare thing.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/02/2011 14:55

Yeah, some people don't realise how lucky they are, only having lots of shit in their neighbourhood. In the olden days, there was lots and lots of shit.

rolandweary · 01/02/2011 14:56

Baroque that's the stupidest idea I've heard in a long long time Hmm

Longstocking2 · 01/02/2011 14:58

beertricks I understand what you are saying but I disagree with your argument. There is too much antisocial dog owning for it to continue as it is. Something has to be done to deter ownership. The cost to the group is too great.

No - I don't think you realise what a difference 7.3 million dog owners not picking up any shit for a week would make - I really don't.....

I am very grateful that the many dog owners round here are responsible and pick up their shit.

So personally I'd rather see something done about the needles, broken bottles, vomit and human urine I find at the boys favourites bike riding spot in the park, and in the play area itself.

DooinMeCleanin · 01/02/2011 15:05

I often wonder where you live. Personally I live in a fairly rough, very working class town. It was featured on C4's worst places to live list in the top 10 because of drugs, violent crime and high unemployment.

Not only that but I also live right opposite the 'rough' park.

I never see children or members of the public getting jumped on by random untrained dogs, I never see large groups of hooded youths with staffies on chains baiting them to fight, the vast majority of people clean up after their dogs, I rarely see stray dogs. I never see any Pitbulls.

Yet on threads like this it seems my town is the only place in the UK without these problems.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 01/02/2011 15:05

why - you seem to think that most dog owners don't bother.......so maybe if most owners didn't actually bother you'd shut up and push for more action taken on people that are breaking the law instead talking of banning much loved family pets.

GrimmaTheNome · 01/02/2011 15:08

I live in a village, loads of dogs, very little shit on the pavements.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 01/02/2011 15:10

Leaving any waste in public is vila and should be an 'on the spot' fine. That foes for fag ends, litter, poo, piss, vomit ect. This world is doomen until people start taking responsibility for themselves.

Then again, are you planning on destroying all wildlife? I'm not to chuffed when my son steps in Deer or Fox shit either but it happens where I live... and birds... well they shit on people and pretty much everywhere else.

Ryoko · 01/02/2011 15:11

I think they should be legally obliged to stick a cork in it.

rolandweary · 01/02/2011 15:11

I don't think you're a liar! I do think many many dog owners don't clean up every single time though.

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 01/02/2011 15:12

Tits - you forgot to mention chewing gum. At least most of the other substances can be cleaned off without ridiculous measures.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 01/02/2011 15:19

Oh yes gum and spit... it's just horrid, especially for someone like we with a touch of hygiene ocd, it really makes me upset to see someone spitting on the path.

rolandweary · 01/02/2011 15:21

I agree about gum and spit by the way - utterly indefensible

I don't know how you would get rid of spitting though, other than uge on the spot fines - you can't ban people.

You could ban dogs though.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 01/02/2011 15:25

roland I would have chucked them at her head the baggage!

DooinMeCleanin · 01/02/2011 15:28

You can't ban dogs, though. For a start it would have to go public vote and it would never pass and secondly what on earth do you propose to do with the 7.3 million pet dogs once they are banned? It is a very silly, very short sighted idea imo. And it would be impossible to carry out.

rolandweary · 01/02/2011 15:31

I'd make it illegal to breed them, and illegal to own one without a licence. Those who already have one would be issued with a licence which they would hand in once it popped its clogs.
