to feel a bit sad? DD has put herself to bed....

She is nearly 7. Tonight I said she needed to go in the bath or shower, so she took herself upstairs and after I supervised hairwashing, she said she was fine, thanks, I could go back downstairs. She came back down in her pjs, had a game with us, then disappeared off again.

When I went searching, she has brushed her teeth and tucked herself up with a book. I feel a bit redundant in Mummy terms! Sad

Is this how it works? Is this the big count down to the door slamming/I hate you years?

I wasn't expecting all this yet!

Ds is 11 and he's not mastered this art yet. Couldn't you sneek up and tuck her in anyway? Sad

HecateQueenOfWitches · 30/01/2011 19:23

Grin you'll learn to love it.

TheFoosa · 30/01/2011 19:23

you should be proud that she's so self sufficient

go give her a bedtime hug and tell her well done Smile

Changing2011 · 30/01/2011 19:24

She has probably broken the family china or something Grin

I lost my mums gold ring once and magically mastered everything to make myself look like an angel. Until she found out...

belgo · 30/01/2011 19:25

Oh dear, is it really bad that I very often put the girls in their room and tell them to play for five minutes before putting themselves to bed while I'm mumsnetting dealing with ds?

onceamai · 30/01/2011 19:25

I still feel a bit surprised when I find DD 12, tucked up in bed.

Portofino · 30/01/2011 19:25

Oh I did. And I sent DH - who has been away 2 nights and whose "turn" it was. (Jammy git). He is away the next 2 nights too - I bet she's want to read Horrid Henry to me tomorrow!

Awww, thats quite sweet, and also reassuring that she is showing independence.

TheFoosa · 30/01/2011 19:26

yes, probably a fluke

goddamn that Horrid Henry and why are there so many of them

Portofino · 30/01/2011 19:29

Belgo, I guess with 3 you are grateful! Wink

If your DD is a good and avid reader then that is wonderful, more than likely she likes her comfortable bed and a good book! It sounds like a calm end to the day. You are blessed. Enjoy her progression to a new mile stone. Doesn't mean you won't have lovely moments of closeness. Tell her to ask you about anything she doesn't understand from her book, but you know that! Smile

belgo · 30/01/2011 19:34

Portofino I even heard dd1 reading a story to dd2 the other nightGrin

Portofino · 30/01/2011 19:38
Grin

I wouldn't say she is a "good" reader. We are in Belgium so is relatively new to it all, but progressing at a rate of knots.

A good reader for her age, and hungry to progress, is what I meant. If your DD is absorbing a second language then even more so...

theoldtrout01876 · 30/01/2011 19:58

make the most of it,soon they will be teenagers and NEVER go to bed, well at night at least:o

LC200 · 30/01/2011 20:04

Horrid Henry at 6 sounds like a good reader to me :)

Portofino · 30/01/2011 20:09

She has these "Early Reader" books. She sounds out the words if she doesn't recognise them. She normally needs at least some help.

My eldest has done this since she was about six. My stepson, aged 15, still gets tucked in by his dad Grin

undercovamutha · 30/01/2011 20:15

DD (4) got up the other day at 6.30 as usual. I inwardly sighed, ready for her to come into our bedroom and demand attention/drink/breakfast etc etc. Instead, I heard her switch her light on, and then just quiet.

Half an hour later I poked my head round her door and she was playing nicely. Another half an hour later, had a look again and she was tucked up in bed looking at books! At EIGHT AM she came in our room to ask for a drink!

I couldn't believe it - it was like the light at the end of the 'no weekend lie-in' tunnel! Hallelujah I say!

StarExpat · 30/01/2011 20:22

undercovamutha - you've given me a renewed hope :) DS is only 2, but I long for the day you have described... now, tell us every detail of what you did, so that it may be replicated.... Grin

undercovamutha · 30/01/2011 20:29

Sad thing was, I didn't really enjoy the lie-in cos I kept disturbing DH to say 'why is it so quiet, what is she doing in there?' !!

StarExpat · 30/01/2011 20:30

I do the same when DS sleeps

AgentZigzag · 30/01/2011 20:39

DD2 took the first steps on her own yesterday Sad

Nooooo, you're not allowed to be a toddler DD2, you're my baaaabbbbyyyy!

JennyRobyn · 30/01/2011 20:53

My DD has been putting herself to bed since she was about 3.
She still does at the age of 7, she will disappear and all will go quiet. I go and check and she is sound asleep.

Now and again i get to give her a good night kiss but not very often.

Now Ds's (14 & 12) will absolutely not go to bed until i tell them...they know what time i like them in bed by but sometimes i forget that they are still up (they are so quiet!!) so end up going to bed really late.

They would sty up all night if i let them.

Enjoy it while you can!

mylifewithstrangers · 30/01/2011 21:00

My nearly 4 year old has been known to put herself to bed on occasion - usually when I am up to my ears dealing with her little brother. I shout out commands to her, and by the time he has gone down she is asleep too Blush

She is also queen of the sneaky nap, sometimes the house just goes quiet and I go upstairs and find she has gone to bed Grin (She knows she is not meant to have a nap in the day because she then doesn't do bedtime very well)
