to feel a little stung that FIL gave this to DH for his birthday?

FIL gave DH the "Adrian Mole: The Prostrate Years" by Sue Townsend for his 40th. I feel a bit stung by it, like he's making some sort of comment on our lives... plus there's the whole bit about the protagonist's ex-girlfriend, and we recently had a go-round about DH being in contact with one of his... that's probably why it bothers me. But still, don't you think it's a bit insulting (both to DH and to me)? Or am I being crazy?

YABU. Not sure what's insulting? If anything, it's a funny (in a good way) book to buy & I'm sure a funnier one to read.

Carrotsandcelery · 29/01/2011 22:18

Would he really have thought about all those things? Maybe he just thought he loved the books as a teenager or whatever we were then, and would love the sequel. It is just a book.

You are reading waaaay too much into it! Smile

Loshad · 29/01/2011 22:20

YABTU - he probably thought - funny book, think DH would like it. guess you need to stop overanalyising

moaningminniewhingesagain · 29/01/2011 22:20

I suspect you are over-thinking this a bit. Fab book Smile

HighPriestessBoo · 29/01/2011 22:20

I think you're reading far much into this. Are you sure your FIL has even read it?

McHobbes · 29/01/2011 22:21

You are being crazy, yes.

I have a pal who thinks we 9as in our crowd of mates) put songs on to refer to events going on in HIS life. He is bonkers. So are you.

MrsFlittersnoop · 29/01/2011 22:22

Have you actually read this book, or any others by Sue Townsend? She is a very funny writer.

Do you deconstruct the hidden meaning of every book you/your DH are given as a gift?

HecateQueenOfWitches · 29/01/2011 22:24

Yes. I think you are overthinking.

traceybath · 29/01/2011 22:24

Yes you are being a bit crazy Smile

DaisyChainGang · 29/01/2011 22:25

Nope, don't deconstruct the meaning of gifts, normally. this one just struck me. As I said, probably because of something else going on. So thank you all for the confirmation that I am being crazy and now I can just forget about it! Blush

YABU-it is a funny book (not that I have read it)it isn't making any sort of statement.

Mrsfluff · 29/01/2011 22:25

I loved the Adrian Mole books when I was growing up. I didn't know there was a new one, so thank you for the thread.

I think yabu and reading too much into the gift, maybe your hub used to read the other Mole books?

MadAboutQuavers · 29/01/2011 22:27

Just a touch over-sensitive Daisy?

mutznutz · 29/01/2011 22:29

My mate bought me a book called 'I hate other people's kids'...and she's right, I generally do Grin

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/01/2011 22:33

OMG OP... you remind me of a woman I work with... her favourite saying is "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not after you"... Confused

Come down off the ceiling now, before you hurt yourself!

bubblewrapped · 29/01/2011 22:37

If he had bought him a book called "how to leave your wife", then yes, I could see your point maybe...

but he didnt, and you need to calm down a bit..

Vallhala · 29/01/2011 22:45

Daisy, come back! You were overthinking it IMHO but look on the bright side... you didn't slap FIL round the head with the book so it's not all bad! :o

Mutznutz aka MadMutz :o - there's a Facebook page in honour of that book. Some of the contributors are even more outspoken than me! Shock

Carrotsandcelery · 29/01/2011 22:47

Daisy we all have our moments - hold your head up high and say, "Yes - I had a moment, and I am proud", then have a large glass of wine and laugh it off.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 29/01/2011 22:47

Daisy - paranoia aside Grin it's a weird book to give to an adult! Maybe it does have some 'meaning' to it?

bubblewrapped · 29/01/2011 22:50

Its not a weird book to give an adult.. lol!!

It is aimed at the adults who would have been teens when they read the original books.

Soups · 29/01/2011 22:51

Crazy Grin

It can be hard to buy books for people, but if you are going to, it's probably considered as one of those safe books. When I was young Adrian Mole was the book to read amongst my peers. My Mum bought me The Cappuccino Years one Christmas. It probably seemed like an obvious choice and a bit of fun, seeing as Adrian is a couple of years older than me. I wouldn't think twice if she were to get me the latest one.
