to be annoyed when "vegetarians" eat fish?

It cannot just be me who finds this irritating?

Someone who eats no meat, but does eat fish is a pescetarian. As a fully fledged vegetarian it bugs the HELL out of me when people say "I'm a veggie, but I eat fish" Or even worse "but I eat fish AND CHICKEN".....Angry

The problem is there are now so many of these "fish eating vegetarians" that people seem to assume all veggies eat fish, and when I eat out and ask what veggie choices there are, I get offered fish and the "true" veggie options are limited to perhaps 1 or 2 dishes.

I have no problem with people eating just fish but PLEASE do not call yourself a veggie when you clearly aren't one! I don't know why people do it, whether they think it's trendy or they are just lazy or confused about what they are.

I know this is a BIG rant but it really really annoys me. If I am a veggie and someone ask me "do you eat fish?" I practically rip their heads off (which I know is unreasonable but there you go Wink )

But AIBU to ask that people only call themselves vegetarians if they actually are one???

Annie, I do dare judge you, too.

Grin Annie

Here's a good one I had forgotten until now. I went on a third date with a man-type-thing to dinner and he ordered a mixed grill. Fine. I ordered something veggie. He went on and on about why I didn't eat meat and when I said it actually made me feel sick to look at he kept pushing bits of fat and gristle at me. The charmer Hmm

After a few minutes of this I had had enough so asked if he knew what cancer was and could he be sure that he wasn't eating it.

He stopped eating and got very angry indeed the twat.

jugglingjo · 28/01/2011 20:58

Well, rainy and vegan, perhaps some of us might judge you back (just a little ! )

  • for judging others.

"Judge ye not, lest you yourself be judged !"

Rainydaze · 28/01/2011 20:59

Ha! Vegans are no strangers to judgmental people.

veganette · 28/01/2011 21:00

Judge away! I know at least that I can eat my food with a clear conscience.

Rainydaze · 28/01/2011 21:00

veganette :)

Mists · 28/01/2011 21:02

Vegans, animal-rights activists and pro-lifers are certainly no strangers to judging or violence against people 'tis true.

Mists · 28/01/2011 21:03

Or being judged. To be fair.

Rainydaze · 28/01/2011 21:03

Yeah, every time I go to a vegan restaurant it's just non-stop violence.

We just can't control it.

If only we ate animal flesh, perhaps we'd be able to contain our violence.

AnnieLobeseder · 28/01/2011 21:03

Marvellous. Shall I tell you what I do for a living too? Then you'd really judge.

Can't you just accept that we all do the best we can and be happy?

Mists · 28/01/2011 21:12

Non-stop violence at Vegan restaurants, love it Grin

Are Straw Men on the menu?

GrannyMo · 28/01/2011 21:49

Bugs me too. For goodness sake, either you are a vegetarian through and through or you're not. No two ways about it.

Its like saying I'm a doctor cos I can put on a bit of sticking plaster.

veganette · 28/01/2011 21:54

Annie, if we all did the best we could, that would be to not eat meat and dairy - it's not necessary for those of us who live in the west to eat these things.

We eat them because we like the taste of them, and consider that the pain and suffering and fear animals go through to reach our plate is worth it for a few moments of pleasure in our mouths.

You can attack me for being judgemental, or call me sanctimonious, or you could consider that I might be right. Eating animals and their products is cruel.

Rainydaze · 28/01/2011 21:58

Yep, veganette it's cruel and it's easy to avoid eating and drinking animal products. I have so many friends who "wish" they "could go vegan". I just want to say "Then do it!"

rusmum · 28/01/2011 22:14

i was veggie (No meat, fish, gelatine, rennet etc) for 10 years. but i did eat dairy and it did annoy me when people said they were veggie but ate fish!!!

AnnieLobeseder · 28/01/2011 23:01

Yes yes, of course, let's all just do it. Like telling women who can't breastfeed that they should just do it and not formula feed. Because of course, they failed because they didn't try hard enough.

I tried to be a vegan. I failed. I accepted that I'm not perfect. I moved on. I still do what I can to minimise the dairy I eat/drink and make sure my milk and eggs come from an ethical a source as I can.

I go to work and use products that are the result of animal suffering and death. But I use them to try to cure animal diseases. Am I conflicted? Hell yes.

But at the end of the day, I only have to answer to myself. And you know what? My conscience is clear too.

tomatoesontoast · 28/01/2011 23:06

I'd feel like a bit of a prat saying 'I'm a pescetarian' though. I just say "I don't eat meat"

TiggyD · 28/01/2011 23:23

If you want to raise your child a vegan does that mean you can't breastfeed?

NoHunIntended · 28/01/2011 23:38

My breastmilk is for my babies, just as a cow's breastmilk is for her calf.

anonymosity · 28/01/2011 23:42

Oh dear...

Lovesdogsandcats · 28/01/2011 23:43

Veganette, loving your posts, from a fellow vegan Smile.

How any normal, thinking, feeling person can consume meat and dairy after seeing the horrific and totally shocking processes the animals must endure, is beyond me.

Sazisi · 28/01/2011 23:45

I'm a pescetarian, but I usually just say "I don't eat meat but I do eat fish", which is long-winded but at least everyone knows what it means. I used to be a vegetarian-that-ate-fish 'til DH went on and on about it being an oxymoron Blush

DD2 however (who's 5) has totally latched on to the word 'pescetarian' and asks if "are these sweets pescetarian or have they got gelatine?", and she calls veggie burgers "pescetarian burgers" :o

randomama · 28/01/2011 23:46

I was a vegetarian for about 15 years (5 of those vegan) but then started eating fish. People say to me oh you're a vegetarian aren't you and I say no I eat fish.

I only eat what I could comfortably kill with my own hands.

During my last pregnancy I became obsessed with eating pork. I visited a lot of pigs and felt totally ok about eating them. But now my baby is here I can't really justify it. They seem cute again not just like giant walking hunks of gammon... Blush

goodasgold · 28/01/2011 23:49

Tiggy I think that if the animal suffering is yourself then that's up to you to decide.
