i'm all for saving money but this is just weird

I really can't see what the fuss is about. IIRC there was a crem that heated an old peoples home in Sweden or Norway.
Where we lived in Switzerland, the local pool had always been heated by the Lego factory next door. When that went somewhere else, the entry price rocketed.
Can't see the difference personally.

LisaD1 · 28/01/2011 08:07

I think it's a great idea and can't see how it's disrespectful to the dead. Having recently lost my nan, she would have thought it was a fab idea, she hated waste of any kind and would be only too pleased to be still being useful in her death (she loved to be "useful" and busy).

Once I'm dead, hopefully not for a long while yet, I couldn't care less what they do to the empty shell that remains, it will rot in the ground or could be used for something more useful, won't matter one iota to me, I'll be dead!

upahill · 28/01/2011 08:14

Genius idea. I think this is a good initiative.

diddl · 28/01/2011 08:17

I love swimming & the thought that the cremation of my body might prove useful to other swimmers is great!

mousymouse · 28/01/2011 08:19

yabu, this is hardly new. in other countries they are doing this for a long time, sometimes even heating flats with the heat.

Al1son · 28/01/2011 08:19

This is a real story and is being planned in a town near where I live.

TBH I don't think the vast majority of locals have a problem with it as we are all used to passing the crem to get to the leisure centre anyway.

I think the press have jumped on this as a possible story and sought out the minority who have a problem with it.

I'm quite sure it will go ahead and nobody will even think twice when they're in the pool.

Grumpla · 28/01/2011 08:25

Yabu.

But I wouldn't want to be cremated anyway, why make your last moments one final pollute?

I'm going to donate all the useful bits and then get the rest popped under a tree in one of those woodland burial bits, mainly to make it difficult for them to sell the forest off afterwards.

But frankly I wouldn't mind being composted. I will, after all, be dead.

Gemsy83 · 28/01/2011 09:56

I think the waste of land is more shocking when it comes to burial. London is apparently going to have no more burial space by 2019. That is shocking.

BarbarianMum · 28/01/2011 10:00

It wouldn't bother me, although I intend my own personal biomass to be used to grow a tree.

YABU

Talking about crematoriums did you see the Mail on Sunday?
Facing prison, the pet crematorium boss who gave dog owners fake ashes after leaving their bodies to rot in a field

Personally I would not be cremated as it is just not eco friendly. It uses 92 cubic metres of gas which is enough to heat an average home for up to 2 weeks and it emits 15% of the UK toxic waste output from amalgam fillings into the atmosphere, not a good idea? Green Burial is much better.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2011 11:17

Oh so typical of the Daily Wail...

I think it's criminal to waste energy; it costs a fortune to heat swimming pools and what's the point of just releasing the energy to the environment?

HecateQueenOfWitches · 31/01/2011 11:24

I think it's a good idea.

Waste not want not.

I'd be happy for my body to be of some small use after I'd finished with it.

Sidge · 31/01/2011 11:27

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Those people are dead and will be respectfully cremated as per their wishes anyway; it makes no difference to them what happens to the excess heat afterwards. Better than wasting it.

Tokyotwist · 31/01/2011 11:30

Bodies still get burnt and the earth is just that little bit healthier. Wish all crematoriums would try to be as efficient.

Great idea.

I would be proud knowing I was being put to such good use. Well I wouldn't as I'd be dead, but hopefully my family would.

Mumsnut · 31/01/2011 11:32

So long as I end up on the mantelpiece in a classy urn, I don't care how I get there.

mayorquimby · 31/01/2011 11:35

i think it's a brilliant idea

PenelopeTitsDropped · 31/01/2011 11:37

Death is all about recycling; great idea.

MaryAnnSingleton · 31/01/2011 11:38

sensible idea -the dead are dead

KayHarker · 31/01/2011 11:39

This is all over our local newspapers, it is a real story and I think it's a perfectly reasonable idea. The proposed new leisure centre is on a site near the crem, so why not.

bubblewrapped · 31/01/2011 11:47

I want to be made into a diamond Grin

Seriously though, why waste the energy produced. It isnt disrespectful, it is resourceful.

reallytired · 31/01/2011 11:54

I want to donate my body to science/ medicine rather than get cremated.

The idea does seem a bit weird, but sometimes weird ideas are wonderful.

GrendelsMum · 31/01/2011 11:55

I'm planning to be a tree when I die. I haven't quite decided what sort, yet. Quite fancy being an apple, so that people visiting the graves will have something to eat.

If I don't manage to be a tree, at the very least I'm going to be a whole heap of spring bulbs.

QuintessentialShadows · 31/01/2011 12:01

A very sensible idea.

Our local hospital is heated by warmth created by garbage from food recycling. Really, every stale crumb or mouldy cheese counts! Hmm

PinkDragonOfDoom · 31/01/2011 12:28

I think its quite the clever idea, using something which would of just been wasted, I can't actually bring myself to read the daily mail but i know the general gist of there alarmist bullshit.

babylann · 31/01/2011 12:30

You know what else is disrespectful to the dead.

Organ donation.

Oh, wait...
