not to get the coffee mashine out?

my father is coming for a visit [slightpanicmode] and he drinks coffee mornings and afternoons.
I never drink coffee at home at all, so the mashine (old fashioned perlator) is far back in the cupboard.
aibu not to get it out, descale it and let it take up valuable counter space for 4 days?
I do however have a stove top espresso thingy so he will not have to go without it at all...

YABVVVVVU. Stove top espresso machines are no substitute for proper percolated coffee. Mine lives next to the sink so my routine is load it for one cup, go and have a fag, drink the coffee and repeat four times before I tackle DD.
It is four days out of your life.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 27/01/2011 08:06

YABU
get it out
let him descale it if really needs it.

we have a tiny galley kitchen - no dishwasher, no microwave, heck, even the fridge freezer lives in the dining room. But the coffee percolator is worth every inch of the space it takes up.

Bogeyface · 27/01/2011 08:08

Yes and no.

I would not get it out myself, descale etc mainly as I wouldnt be arsed! But, I would tell him where it is, where the descaler is etc if he wants to use it that badly. And if he does the hard work on cleaning it, then giving it counter space for a few days wont hurt.

Go and buy coffee that is suitable for the stove top espresso machine and then let your father have espresso if he chooses.

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 27/01/2011 08:08

YANBU.
Your old-fashioned percolator might not work any more, and he might not even like percolated coffee (very hot and tasteless imo).
Why not just ask tell him all you've got is the stove-top thing and if he wants to he could bring his own cafetiere/filter machine/espresso machine.
I'm a bit of a coffee junkie and sometimes take my own cafetiere mug gadget when staying away (especially if I'm staying in an instant-coffee zone).

FabbyChic · 27/01/2011 08:50

I drink coffee by the galloon, but I drink instant, what's wrong with a jar of Nescafe?

campergirls · 27/01/2011 08:57

What's wrong with Nescafe? It tastes vile, doesn't deliver a caffeine hit, and is made by Nestle. Enough reasons for you?

TrillianAstra · 27/01/2011 08:58

If you hate the machine then isn't it currently taking up valuable cupboard space.

Chuck the machine out, buy a little cafetiere and coffee to go in it - he can have proper coffee but it's no more difficult than making tea.

Nescafe is in no way related to coffee. It's brown and soluble and that's about it. So is crap come to think of it.

NinkyNonker · 27/01/2011 09:04

Yabu. He's your dad, and a guest. You know he likes coffee, you have the means to allow him to make it but you can't be arsed to get it out of the cupboard and run a descaler through it?

TrillianAstra · 27/01/2011 09:05

I love our coffee machine. We have it on a plug timer so that it comes on in the morning and makes us coffee.

I much prefer stove-top coffee to percolated - if you mean one of those little metal things like a pot on a stand?

I find percolated comes out watery and grey, whereas it's strong and fragrant from the stove-top.

I'd say use that and chuck out the monster lurking in your cupboard. Or use it for the last time during dad's visit and tell him you're getting rid - he might take it of your hands!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 27/01/2011 09:09

off your hands

I just googled, it*s just a normal filter coffee mashine, but my mum always calls it percolator...somehow those silly things stick with you. I like the caffeetiere idea, otherwise I can also use the filter part of the mashine and use to kettle to heat up water.
but I have decided that the "thing" stays in the cupboard for now and probably will go to the recycling centre when we go there next time.

One like this SAF

Put everything in machine and turn on, but this thing keeps the plug turned off until the time you say.

Oops. How did that happen? This

AutumnWitch · 27/01/2011 09:16

Just having a kitchen clear-out myself. I agree with several other posters, ditch the percolator, get a two cup cafetiere and some nice coffee. I don't drink coffee, but I love the smell when it's brewing for someone else.

My in-laws were really touched when I got in some Earl Grey tea for them when I can't stand the stuff.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 27/01/2011 09:16

YABU if that is what he prefers? 4 days for your Dad??? Come on!

However if he likes the stove top coffee then surely that will be ok? Personally I find both methods apply too much heat - I prefer plunger coffee. I have a double walled metal one which keeps the coffee warm for quite a while, so you can enjoy a couple of hot cups out of it at a leisurely pace.

Nagoo · 27/01/2011 09:18

Do you dream of real coffee? Grin

KatieMiddleton · 27/01/2011 09:20

Get a couple of these and some filter papers.

Hot, fresh coffee with no more faff than instant but no cafetiere cleaning hassle because you just pop the paper and grounds in the bin/compost heap.

I think I have a 10% discount code for that company i linked to somewhere if anyone's interested?

Bearcrumble · 27/01/2011 09:21

Stove top thing does better tasting coffee.
